BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Thursday every primary and middle school student in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County will have new textbooks when the new school semester starts."We have asked publishing houses to rush to print and prepare textbooks for Zhouqu. All of them promised to have them ready by the start of the new semester," ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said Thursday.Schools in Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province are scheduled to begin the autumn semester on Aug. 16.Some 334,075 volumes of textbooks and support material for Zhouqu's primary and middle school students were kept in a storehouse belonging to the local Xinhua Bookstore that was destroyed by the massive mudslides.Primary and middle schools in Zhouqu need 180,000 textbooks for the new semester, the Ministry of Education said.Xu said the publishing houses will send the textbooks to the provincial Xinhua Bookstore in Gansu before Aug. 14.The ministry also vowed to ensure the supply of textbooks to other areas severely hit by natural disasters, including flood-hit Jilin Province in northeastern China. In addition, Xu Mei said poor students from disaster-hit areas entering college will receive preferential treatment in enrolment and in application for loans. The ministry has asked colleges to investigate the financial situation of freshmen from the disaster-hit areas. The death toll due to the massive mudslides in Zhouqu in the early hours of Sunday had, as of Wednesday, risen to 1,117, with 627 still missing.

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) - The People's Bank of China (PBOC), also known as the central bank, said Thursday it would maintain its moderately loose monetary policy and enhance financial supports to boost the economy's sustainable development. The bank will apply multiple monetary tools to keep an appropriate growth in money supply in a bid to strike a balance between meeting the need of funding economic development and managing the inflation expectation, the PBOC said in a statement posted on its website. The PBOC reiterated it would maintain continuity and stability in monetary policy while, at the same time, making the policy more specific and more flexible. It vowed to improve the yuan's exchange rate mechanism, and increase financial support to promote the transformation of the economic growth pattern and adjustment of the economic structure.China's broad money supply (M2), which covers cash in circulation and all deposits, increased 18.5 percent year on year to 67.39 trillion yuan by the end of June, which marked a slowdown from the 21 percent increase at the end of May, the PBOC said.During the same period, narrow money supply (M1), cash in circulation plus current corporate deposits, climbed 24.6 percent from a year earlier to 24.06 trillion yuan, representing a decrease of 5.3 percentage points from the end of May, according to the PBOC.The bank also warned of potential domestic inflation risks due to complicated situations both at home and abroad.Increases in the costs of labor and environmental requirements, combined with continuing progresses in the reforms in the prices of resource products, will likely impact the inflation expectation.Meanwhile, the central bank pointed out that external 'hot money' may push up price hike pressures."The global monetary situation is relatively loose, as nations across the world have been prudent in their stimulus exits due to continuing uncertainties in the economic recovery. Excessive money is likely to seek various outlets, adding potential risks of inflation expectations," the PBOC said in its statement.

BEIJING, June 19 (Xinhua) -- The People's Bank of China, China's central bank, has decided to proceed further with the reform of the Renminbi exchange rate regime to enhance the RMB exchange rate flexibility, a spokesperson of the central bank said Saturday. The decision was made in view of the recent economic situation and financial market developments at home and abroad, and the balance of payments (BOP) situation in China, the spokesperson said in a statement. In further proceeding with the reform, continued emphasis would be placed to reflecting market supply and demand with reference to a basket of currencies. The exchange rate floating bands will remain the same as previously announced in the inter-bank foreign exchange market, the spokesman said. The spokesperson said China's external trade is becoming more balanced. The ratio of current account surplus to GDP, after a notable reduction in 2009, has been declining since the beginning of 2010."With the BOP account moving closer to equilibrium, the basis for large-scale appreciation of the RMB exchange rate does not exist," the spokesperson said. The PBOC will further enable market to play a fundamental role in resource allocation, promote a more balanced BOP account, maintain the RMB exchange rate basically stable at an adaptive and equilibrium level, and achieve the macroeconomic and financial stability in China, the spokesperson said.China has moved into a managed floating exchange rate regime based on market supply and demand with reference of a basket of currencies since July 1, 2005.The spokesperson said the reform of the RMB exchange rate regime has been making steady progress since 2005, producing the anticipated results and playing a positive role. With the current round of international financial crisis was at its worst, the exchange rate of a number of sovereign currencies to the U.S. dollar depreciated by varying margins."The stability of the RMB exchange rate has played an important role in mitigating the crisis' impact, contributing significantly to Asian and global recovery, and demonstrating China's efforts in promoting global rebalancing," the spokesperson said. The gradual recovery of the global economy and upturn of the Chinese economy has become more solid with enhanced economic stability. It is desirable to proceed further with reform of the RMB exchange rate regime and increase the RMB exchange rate flexibility, said the spokesperson.

HANGZHOU, July 4 (Xinhua) -- A new regular direct passenger sea route between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan was officially opened Saturday after a ship safely returned from Taiwan. The passenger ship, Coscostar, returned to the Damaiyu Port, Taizhou City of eastern Zhejiang Province Saturday, making it the second port on the mainland that has served the regular direct sea route with Taiwan, said He Jinliang, deputy head of the city's Taiwan affairs office. On June 26, the ship, carrying more than 500 passengers, traveled about 302 km to the Keelung Port of Taiwan, He said. With a tonnage of 26,800, the ship, owned by the China Ocean Shipping Companies Group, could carry about 600 passengers, 256 containers and 150 automobiles. The COSCO Star Passenger Ro-Ro Ship is berthed inside the Dabaiyu Port, prior to its maiden voyage to Keelung of Taiwan, at Taizhou City, east China's Zhejiang Province, June 26, 2010.The ship is scheduled to shuttle once a week. It will depart from Damaiyu in Yuhuan County on Saturday night and return the following Friday. The single trip would take eight to nine hours, traveling at various speed.Wang Yihao, deputy head of Yuhuan County, said the standard ticket costs 600 yuan (88.6 U.S.dollars) and the deluxe class ticket costs 1,000 yuan."The prices are nearly half that of airline tickets. With this new route, cross-Strait travel will be much easier, more comfortable and will attract more mainland tourists to Taiwan," Wang said.In August 2009, the first regular direct sea route was launched to link eastern Fujian Province's Xiamen Port and Taiwan's Taichung Port and Keelung Port.
