CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- A group of parents from the Sweetwater Union High School district have started a petition hoping to push the district to allow their student-athletes to return to practice. As of Tuesday night, the petition has over 1,100 signatures. The parents want their children to follow all safety and social distancing guidelines, but they say the district has told them the kids can't practice. The petition gives examples of other school districts in San Diego County that have allowed their student athletes to return to practice. The petition even suggests that district officials are keeping sports shut down to balance Sweetwater's multi-million dollar budget deficit.Parents argue that not having sports is affecting their children's mental health and that not practicing could put them at a disadvantage once the seasons starts and when it comes time to get sports scholarships. ABC 10News reached out to the Sweetwater Union High School District and a spokesperson said that safety is their priority and that they are monitoring the situation. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Things got heated Thursday at a protest in Chula Vista over a library's Drag Queen Story Time. Drag Queen Story Time, set to begin at the Otay Ranch Library September 10, inspired strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. Roughly two dozen residents against the event said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. "How dare anybody. We want to protect children. We want to protect our culture. That's not hate. that's love," said Arthur Schapper, a protester against the story time. "Adult entertainers as role models? What's next? Why not porn stars," he continued. As tensions mounted at Thursday’s protest, officers with the Chula Vista Police Department were forced twice to intervene. A speaker in opposition of the story time spoke at a podium as a crowd gathered, shouting “no justice, no peace.” As voices grew louder, a group of officers made their way through the crowd, separating the groups. "But they have not even stopped to talk to these performance, these people, these human beings who just happen to also be drag queens," said Kelly Hutton. Dennis Hodges, a pastor in Lemon Grove, came to the event to oppose Drag Queen Story Time, but said he regretted how tensions escalated. "I don't scream and holler at people. I don't expect them to scream and holler at me."The City of Chula Vista issued the following statement about the event: 1411

CHULA VISTA, Calif (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista family is getting creative this year, making a special “candy monster tree” to help people socially distance while also having a good time on Halloween.Homeowners Chris and Marty Morrow say they turned a large magnolia tree in their front yard into a fun Halloween activity, hanging so-called “candy monsters” from black ribbons.“We passed out Golden Tickets to neighbors to bring their children for socially distant Halloween fun,” Marty Morrow said.RELATED: City of San Diego sets up 'grab-and-go' candy sites for HalloweenAt sunset, kids will be allowed to pick candy from the tree one at a time.“It’s about having fun and giving some normalcy to the local kids in Chula Vista.”, said Chris Morrow. “We have lived in our home for 8 years and are happy to give smiles this year.”The homeowners say they got the idea from Martha Stewart. The festivities take place in the area of Jefferson Avenue and Flower Street between 5:30 and 6:30 on October 31. 1002

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Long before Chula Vista became San Diego County's second-largest city, it was rural farmland with citrus groves from San Diego Bay to Otay Mountain. "It was known as the lemon capital of the world," says Chula Vista history librarian Tanya Carr. Lemons, oranges, and lots of celery once dominated Chula Vista’s landscape. That began to change in 1911 when Chula Vista was officially incorporated as a California city. "Those lemon fields were replaced by Third Avenue, and that was our big main street in Chula Vista," adds Carr.See complete coverage of Life in Chula VistaFarming established Chula Vista's diverse culture but World War II began the city's rapid rise in population."I'm considered what's called the Navy brat," says Harry Orgovan. Harry Orgovan is the president of the South Bay Historical Society and the Chula Vista Heritage Museum. His family and many other military families like his moved to Chula Vista during the war, tripling the population from 5,000 residents to 16,000 by 1950. "In a sense, life was simpler back then and more innocent," adds Orgovan. World War II brought an industrial revolution to Chula Vista. The Rohr Aircraft Corporation opened with as many as 11,000 employees building power units for the B-24 Liberator. "You hear Rohr and just about every other person you talk to in Chula Vista either worked for Rohr, retired from Rohr, had family that worked for Rohr, and it provided thousands of jobs for the community," says Carr.TIMELINE: Chula Vista through the yearsWhen men left to fight in the war, women took over in the factories, changing the workforce as we know it. After the war, Chula Vista saw even more growth. It was a melting pot of Caucasians, Japanese, Filipinos, Mexicans, and more.Shelley Rudd, a Chula Vistan since age two, was also an elementary school teacher and witnessed the diverse culture first hand."I love the diversity of Chula Vista,” says Rudd. “I would have from five to seven primary languages in my classroom every year."As for notables, Chula Vista is home to Rita Hayworth, Mario Lopez, the 2009 Little League World Series Champs, and the Olympic Training Center. The city's best days may be yet to come with the much-anticipated development of the Chula Vista Bayfront."It's going to put us on the map as a thriving, culturally diverse, desirable tourist destination," says Carr with a big smile. 2416
