CARLSBAD, Calif., (KGTV) -- This afternoon,  friends and family said their final good-byes to Justin Meek, the Coronado native who died in the Borderline Bar shooting on November 8, 2018. On the same day, students at Sage Creek High School read letters of appreciation to their loved ones. One student wrote his message to his older sister who survived the shooting in Thousand Oaks. Teenagers are not known to pour out their feelings. But for Sage Creek High School students, it is a requirement for their English class. As part of a senior assignment called "Project Gratitude," students expressed their thanks to those who helped shape their lives. They were to write a letter, call the recipient, and reflect. “I know I don’t show it often, but I’m so proud to have you as my mom,” Izabella Razmi said. Her letter was to her mother, US Navy Captain Shay Razmi. During her deployments, Izabella was the woman of the house.  954

CAMPO, Calif. — Campo Elementary School students were forced off a school bus after a man stormed onto the bus armed with two knives.Matthew Barker, 37, of Campo, was arrested by the San Diego Sheriff's Department after he boarded the bus packed with students at an apartment complex on Friday around 8:30 a.m., according to Mountain Empire Unified School District superintendent Kathy Granger.Officials said Barker entered the bus and was immediately told by the driver to leave. Barker ignored the driver and continued up the stairs and toward students before the driver got in front of him.As Barker tried to push past the driver, a grandmother of one of the students saw what was happening and got onto the bus to help the driver, officials said. That's when Barker reportedly pulled out a knife and swung at the driver.As the driver and grandmother struggled with Barker, an older student ushered students to the back exit of the school bus and called to nearby parents for help. The students were able to exit out of the bus unharmed.Another good Samaritan then got on the bus, at which point Barker turned the knife on himself, according to the Sheriff's Department. The Samaritan pried the knife away from Barker and pulled him off the bus as deputies arrived.Barker has been charged with felony assault. Authorities are investigating the incident and believes drugs were a factor in the attack.The bus driver and Samaritans were not injured."We take safety very seriously and want to assure you our buses remain a safe form of transportation for getting children to and from school," Granger said in a statement. 1669

CHICAGO, Ill. – The City of Chicago will soon implement under another stay-at-home advisory as it seeks to slow the spread of the coronavirus.The city’s mayor, Lori Lightfoot, announced Thursday that the advisory will go into effect on Monday, Nov. 16 at 6 a.m.Lightfoot says the advisory will call on the people of Chicago to stay at home unless for essential reasons, stop having guests over – including relatives they don’t live with, avoid non-essential travel, and cancel “traditional” Thanksgiving plans."Residents are advised to only leave home to go to work or school, or for essential needs such as seeking medical care, going to the grocery store or pharmacy, picking up food, or receiving deliveries," the city wrote.The city says the advisory will remain in place for 30 days or until the commissioner of health, Dr. Allison Arwady, determines a change in the guidance is appropriate.The new advisory comes as the city and many parts of the country experience the highest coronavirus case rates since the pandemic began. Lightfoot says data shows the city is seeing an average of at least 1,900 cases per day."If we continue on the path we’re on and don’t step up to do the things we know work, we estimate we will lose 1,000 more Chicagoans to this virus by the end of the year," said the mayor.Lightfoot says the stay-at-home advisory is part of a new strategy called “Protect Chicago,” which she describes as a comprehensive effort that includes new regulatory actions, neighborhood street-level activations and citywide public awareness.Watch the mayor's announcement below: 1598

CHICAGO — Brown paper covered the windows of Ed Burke's office at Chicago City Hall on Thursday after federal agents showed up there.Burke, who is the City Council Finance Committee chairman in Chicago, once served as President Donald Trump's property tax attorney, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.Klafter & Burke, his firm, has often sought to reduce the property taxes Trump Tower and other commercial properties have to pay.The visit from federal agents was unannounced, and it has not been said why they might be there. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - A brush fire on base at Camp Pendleton was visible above North San Diego County Monday afternoon.Camp Pendleton officials reported the vegetation fire was located on range 409, at the northeast end of the base.The smoke was reported in the Fallbrook area near the base, according to North County Fire. SDG&E's Alert fire camera showed a large plume from the Red Mountain viewpoint."There is no threat to our district at this time," North County Fire tweeted. Camp Pendleton officials confirmed there was no danger to structures.Base officials said on Twitter later Monday night that the forward progress of the fire had been stopped. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. 725
