San Diego (KGTV) -- A person was killed when their motorcycle crashed into a guardrail while riding with friends.Police received the report of the crash at the intersection of Sweetwater and Shannonbrook Court just after 10:30 p.m. in Lemon Grove.Police closed the intersection to investigate how the motorcyclist lost control.The victim died at the scene, their name was not immediately released. 405

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was arrested Tuesday night following a chase that injured one woman.According to San Diego Police, officers noticed that the man’s headlights were out and tried to pull him over near Nimitz Boulevard and Rosecrans Street around 8:22 p.m.The man then reportedly took off, striking two cars along the way. The pursuit then led officers onto Interstate 5 where the suspect struck the back of an SUV, injuring a woman inside.Officers were able to take the man into custody after he tried to cross I-5 and run down a steep embankment.The severity of the woman’s injuries are unclear. 612

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new technology platform launched this week is making it easier for restaurants, hotels, and caterers to donate food to those facing hunger in San Diego County.The new platform, MealConnect, was unveiled by Feeding San Diego. CEO Vince Hall says the free platform will help rescue the more than 14 million pounds of food going into San Diego landfills every year. "This is an issue that is compelling, it is serious, and it is urgent because hunger is debilitating," said Hall. Restaurants and food service providers use the MealConnect app to submit a food donation. It's then picked up by a volunteer and delivered to a nearby charity. Nancy Kane is one of the first San Diego volunteers to take part in the program. "It's flexible, it's not that hard to do, I can do it on my own time. I love it; it's one more thing I can do to make a difference," said Kane.Volunteers receive training and equipment to ensure food is delivered safely. They can choose their delivery hours and can accept or decline requests via text message. MealConnect enables food donors of all sizes, such as hotels, meeting and event planners, restaurants, farmers market vendors, and convenience stores to post surplus food to the system.Feeding San Diego received a ,500 grant from the Walmart Foundation to support the launch of MealConnect in San Diego County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego law student is making parking less expensive downtown. The city approved to lower rates and extend parking hours along Third Avenue and Cedar Street on Thursday. It's no secret downtown parking is tough. "Sometimes it’s just hard to find one," said Oday Yousif. "That’s the problem. It’s never guaranteed."For students at Cal Western Law School, it's not any easier. "8 o'clock in the morning, that’s when the meters start running. That’s when most classes start; they’re already full," said Yousif. There are 26 metered spots on Third Avenue and Cedar Street right next to the school. "My bank statement is just filed 'City of San Diego parking'. .25 an hour for a max of two hours. So, after those two hours, you have to move your car or you’ll get a ticket," said Yousif.He got three tickets in one year. "They’re about 60 to 70 dollars, and then there’s a fee. I've appealed every single one I've got."Yousif wrote an email to the city to try to fix the situation. He worked on a resolution with the Downtown Parking Management Group for ten months. They proposed lowering the rate to 50 cents per hour for up to four hours of parking. "Giving us 50 cents an hour is not only beneficial to help students, but doing it at four hours is the perfect combination to help students who are just trying to have an ideal parking scenario," said Yousif. That proposal was approved unanimously by the City Transportation Engineering Division on Thursday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A juvenile was arrested Wednesday for allegedly making a threat against a San Diego Unified School District high school.The juvenile was arrested at Serra High School for the alleged threat, according to SDUSD. The suspect told school police the comment was not meant to be taken seriously. While police deemed the threat non-credible, they determined the comment meant the definition of a criminal threat.The language of the threat and how it was issued was not immediately clear.RELATED: DA: Nine minors charged in recent threats to local schoolsClasses at Serra High were held on a normal scheduled Wednesday despite the report.
