UNITED NATIONS, May 31 (Xinhua) -- China on Monday called on the UN Security Council to quickly respond to and take actions on Israel's deadly attack against a humanitarian flotilla bound for Gaza."China is shocked by Israel's attack on a multinational convoy carrying international aid to Gaza which resulted in heavy casualties," said Yang Tao, a counsellor of the Chinese permanent mission to the United Nations, at the 15-nation council's emergency meeting."We condemn Israel's actions targeting humanitarian workers and civilians," he said. "We support a quick response by the Security Council and take necessary actions."Yang also expressed serious concern about the "grim" humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, especially the Gaza Strip."We urge Israel immediately and fully implement Security Council resolution 1860, fully open border crossings, lift blockade on the Gaza Strip so as to allow unimpeded flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and allow local people to achieve early recovery and restore a normal life," he added.The council was currently meeting behind closed doors to discuss the text of a draft presidential statement submitted by Turkey.

HONG KONG, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region held Friday a grand funeral ceremony to say goodbye to well-known businessman Tsui Tsin-tong, who was also a noted social activist, philanthropist and a close friend to the Communist Party of China.Tsui was also a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee before he died of an illness on April 2 this year in the Chinese capital of Beijing at the age of 69.Jia Qinglin, chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, the country's top advisory body, and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping had both sent messages of condolences to Tsui's family after Tsui's death.In their messages of condolences, Jia and Xi praised Tsui for his great contributions to Hong Kong's stable transition, smooth handover from Britain to China and Hong Kong's lasting prosperity, as well as Tsui's contributions to Chinese mainland's reform-and- opening-up drive and modernization.Tsui's funeral ceremony was held at Hong Kong's landmark Convention and Exhibition Center in the day. NANPING, Fujian, March 25 (Xinhua) -- Four of the five injured school children in a stabbing attack in southeast China's Fujian Province Tuesday, which left eight dead, became conscious Thursday, local authorities said.The four were in a relatively stable condition but still faced uncertainties and were all under intensive care, said Liu Bin, an official with the health bureau of Nanping City, where the bloodshed occurred.Zheng Minsheng, a former community doctor in the city, stabbed 13 children at the entrance of a primary school Tuesday morning in Nanping when crowds of students were arriving, leaving eight dead and five injured.One senior doctor and several chest surgeons arrived in Nanping from Beijing Wednesday to treat the children.The Procuratorate of Yanping District in Nanping City approved the arrest of Zheng Wednesday afternoon, on charges of intentional homicide, said Ye Xianjin, director of the Yanping District procuratorate office Wednesday.Zheng committed the attacks as he felt frustrated after breaking up with his girlfriend last year. He also said he found life meaningless, according to Xu Jingping, deputy head of the city's public security bureau.

BEIJING, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government has allocated another 200 million yuan (29.3 million U.S. dollars) to quake relief in the northwest Qinghai Province on top of 500 million yuan already earmarked, the Ministry of Finance said Friday.The funds will support relief efforts, including resettlement, subsidy on daily necessities, medical care, epidemic prevention, re-opening of schools, and infrastructure repairs, according to the ministry's website.The ministry ordered timely allotment and tightened management of the relief funds to help the quake-affected residents to restore production and life as early as possible.The 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Qinghai's Yushu prefecture on April 14 had left at least 2,200 people dead, with more than 100,000 homeless.

BEIJING, April 21 (Xinhua) -- Yu Zaiqing, vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee (COC), on Wednesday paid tribute to the late former International Olympic Committee chief Juan Antonio Samaranch, naming him "an old friend of the Chinese people."Yu said in a statement, "Samaranch is an old friend of the Chinese people. He had always hoped that China could host an Olympic Games. And his wish was finally realized in 2008. The Chinese people thank him."Yu, who is also an International Olympic Committee vice president, added, "We want to express our deep condolences to the death of Mr. Samaranch.
