SAN DIEGO (CNS) - County health officials confirmed a diagnosis of infectious pulmonary tuberculosis in a San Diego International Airport employee Friday but stressed that the risk of public exposure is considerably low.Officials with the county Health and Human Services Agency determined the potential exposure period to be Jan. 1 to May 29 in an area of the airport that the public cannot access. County health officials also found no evidence of the disease being transmitted from the employee to any close contacts.County officials said they are in the process of notifying employees of Southwest Airlines, G2 Secure Staff LCC and the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority about the possible exposure. Affected employees were being advised to talk to their employers for more information."In most cases, a person has to be in close contact with someone who has TB for a long period of time to be at risk for getting TB,'' said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, the county's interim deputy public health officer. "In this case the employee does not spend significant time in any given area, had minimal close contact with employees and contact with members of the public was limited to short periods of time.''Tuberculosis is generally transmitted through the air or via contact with an infected person. Roughly one-third of those exposed to the bacterial disease will develop it, according to the HHSA, but most avoid infection. Tuberculosis symptoms can include a persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplainable weight loss.Due to the low risk of exposure, county health officials did not indicate that they plan to offer testing to airport staff. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities today identified a 19-year-old woman who was fatally shot following a parking lot fight in the Bonita area. Sheriff's deputies responded at 7:40 p.m. Saturday to a report of shooting at an apartment complex in the 5100 block of Cedarwood Road, according to Lt. Thomas Seiver of the Sheriff's Homicide Unit.The initial investigation revealed a fight took place between several women in the parking lot before the victim, identified as Janessa Delvalle, was fatally shot, Seiver said. When deputies arrived, they found people giving her CPR.She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fatally stabbed his 66-year-old uncle during an argument in their Pacific Beach condominium was sentenced Monday to 15 years to life in state prison.Randy Bautista Baisa, 39, pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge in connection with the 2018, killing of Merlino Bautista. Authorities said the defendant and the victim lived together.Prosecutors said Baisa -- who has significant mental health issues, according to the prosecution and defense -- stabbed his uncle 16 times, mostly in the back. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Julian man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing after the car he was driving struck and fatally injured a bicyclist on a rural road east of El Cajon.Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, was heading east on Dehesa Road near Singing Hills Golf Course when his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage veered into a bike lane east of Willow Glen Drive and hit Kevin Wilson of La Mesa from behind about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took Wilson, also 56, to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where was pronounced dead.Following the crash, Nelson allegedly kept driving to the east and south before pulling over on Sloane Canyon Road and fleeing on foot, CHP public- affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Officers eventually found the abandoned vehicle, and a helicopter search crew spotted Nelson in a nearby brushy area. He was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and- run.Nelson was being held on ,000 bail pending arraignment, tentatively scheduled for Thursday afternoon. 1083

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - For the second day in a row, San Diego County public health officials reported a case rate of fewer than 100 positive COVID-19 tests per 100,000 people, indicating things may be improving locally with regard to the pandemic.If the case rate -- which was 96.5 per 100,000 people on Thursday -- stays below 100 on Friday, the county will officially be off the state's monitoring list. After an additional 14 consecutive days below that number, some schools with students in grades 7-12 could potentially reopen for in- person teaching, depending on individual school district metrics. Theoretically, if current trends continue, students could be in school by Aug. 28.Additionally, 48 elementary schools have filed waivers with the county to return to school early.While signs look positive for the region, County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher warned county residents against getting complacent."We are seeing progress, but we are in the middle of a marathon, not a sprint to the finish line right in front of us," he said Thursday. "Our goal is not just to have the rate of cases fall below 100 per 100,000, but to keep it there."State mandates on which businesses are allowed to have indoor operations would not change, Fletcher said, until the county gets more information from Gov.
