Locals call Atlanta, Georgia, the city too busy to hate.During early voting, however, it’s filled with people who would rather not wait.“We’re trying to make sure that our voices are heard during a really critical moment in our nation’s history,” said local voter Everette Long. “And avoid really long lines.”A record number of voters turned out during the first day of early voting in Georgia this year, including first-time voter Tim Crane.“I stood there for about four hours, but I wasn’t mad,” Crane said. “I was kind of excited to go on and see what voting was like.”Long lines at the polls and broken voting machines were issues for thousands of Georgia voters on primary day back in June, which raised questions about what it would be like when it came time for this year’s presidential election. In an effort to avoid long lines, thousands of voters flocked to the Atlanta Hawks’ State Farm Arena, which was transformed into the state’s largest early polling precinct. Some showed up ready to time any potential delays.“We got here early and it took 17 minutes and 40 seconds to vote,” said Torri Griffin who took her mother, Lena Joiner, to fill out their ballots at the pro basketball arena.Atlanta Hawks basketball head coach Lloyd Pierce moved from the sidelines on the court to the front lines of this early voting site.“Just doing my duty,” Pierce said. “Trying to help making voting easy for everybody.”According to the United States Elections Projects, more than 10 million Americans cast their ballots within the first day-and-a-half of 2020 early voting, a number that shatters the 2016 turnout. While many people tout the benefits of early voting, experts warn there could be some challenges. Political science expert Robert Preuhs, Ph.D. of MSU Denver explains.“If something happens between now and Election Day, that could fundamentally change people’s minds, they’re already going to have their ballot in,” he said.Preuhs says early voting could change the dynamics of this election and alter the timeframe for when ballots are counted.“The big issue is going to be on Election Day, because most states don’t allow for county clerks to count until Election Day and so you have all these ballots that still need to be counted at once,” he said.Despite any perceived challenges, many voters are still showing up early with the hopes of avoiding any kind of voter suppression“However, suppressed people feel, knowing that there are opportunities like this, people feel validated about their decisions,” said local voter Aaron Burkes. They're decisions that will impact the future of our country as Americans in Atlanta can’t wait to make their votes matter, even with Election Day just few weeks away. 2725

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former business manager of Stan Lee was arrested Saturday on elder abuse charges involving the late comic book legend.Keya Morgan was taken into custody in Arizona on an outstanding arrest warrant after being charged by Los Angeles County prosecutors earlier this month.Morgan faces felony charges including theft, embezzlement, forgery or fraud against an elder adult, and false imprisonment of an elder adult. A misdemeanor count also alleges elder abuse.Authorities say Morgan sought to capitalize on the Marvel Comic mastermind's wealth and exert influence over Lee even though he had no authority to act on his behalf.Police say Morgan pocketed more than 2,000 from autograph signing sessions Lee did in May 2018. Authorities say Morgan at one point also took Lee from his Hollywood Hills home to a Beverly Hills condominium "where Morgan had more control over Lee."Lee's daughter said in a request for a restraining order last year that Morgan was manipulating the mentally declining Lee, preventing him from seeing family and friends, and trying to take control of his money and business affairs.Attorney Alex Kessel has said Morgan has never abused or taken advantage of Lee. Kessel said in an email on Saturday that he had been in contact with prosecutors to arrange for Morgan to surrender on Tuesday."It is unfortunate that the DA and police did not honor our commitment to surrender next week and arrested him," Kessel said in an email.Lee died in November at the age of 95.Morgan's bail has been set at 0,000. He will eventually be extradited to Los Angeles to face the charges. 1626

LIVONIA, Michigan - To knock or not to knock. That is the question on the minds of many political campaigns as the nation heads into the final stretch of the 2020 campaign.Door knocking has traditionally been a fall pastime in every presidential election with swarms of volunteers descending upon neighborhoods in the most competitive counties around the country. For months, Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden blocked his supporters from going door-to-door, citing the ongoing pandemic.Meanwhile President Donald Trump’s campaign continued to hit the pavement knocking on as many as 1 million doors per week nationwide. That is how it appeared to be for the rest of the campaign until last weekend when the Biden campaign abruptly shifted policy and gave the green light to let volunteers start knocking on doors.Top Democrats with the Biden campaign insist strict health guidelines will be followed.DOES IT WORK?For Parker Madock, a 19-year-old staffer for Trump in Michigan, door knocking has become a part of her daily routine.“We are knocking right now the people we aren’t sure of,” Maddock said during a recent door knocking event in Livonia, a suburb of Detroit.“Every time you talk with a voter, they are more likely to vote for your candidate,” Maddock said. How many Biden volunteers actually door knock, after being told it was unsafe for months, is unclear.Biden Detroit Volunteer DeLisle Horton-Willis told Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George recently she thought the timing wasn’t quite right.“I think it’s a little dangerous at this time,” Horton-Willis said.Horton-Willis says she much prefers phone banking and that Michigan Democrats have been making around 10,000 phone calls each day on behalf of Biden.“I can’t do a lot but if everybody do a little. We are good,” Horton-Willis said. The Biden campaign has said Pennsylvania, Nevada and Michigan are expected to see the first major wave of door knocking. Trump’s campaign has said they’ll be continuing robust door-knocking operations in several swing states. 2055

LONDON (AP) — The U.K. military seized control of an oil tanker that dropped anchor in the English Channel after reporting it had seven stowaways on board who had become violent. Defense Secretary Ben Wallace and Home Secretary Priti Patel authorized the action in response to a police request. Initial reports confirm the crew was safe. The incident began about 10 a.m. on the Libyan-registered tanker Nave Andromeda. Authorities imposed a three-mile exclusion zone around the vessel. A retired Royal Navy rear admiral told The Associated Press he suspects the stowaways grew violent as the tanker neared port, and the crew retreated to a secure area known as “the citadel” to retain control of the vessel. 715
