BRANSON, Mo. – Tourist destinations across America have a busy season and an off-season. During the off-season, the economy tends to slow down. That holds true for a couple months each year in Branson, Missouri – a place known as a family-friendly town usually filled with visitors in the parks, lakes, and shops. “We are at about a six week standstill after the first of the year,” said Lynn Berry with the Branson Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau. The rest of the time, Branson welcomes 9 million visitors a year. When the town’s busy season slows down, nonprofit Christian Action Ministries speeds up. “Right now is the height of our season at Christian Action Ministries and dealing with food insecurity,” said Kevin Huddleston, the executive director with Christian Action Ministries.The organization helps feed the community. “Primarily to help people get through the off-season months,” he said. Huddleston said during the summer they see around 100 households a day. During this time of the year, that number is about 150. The population of Branson floats around 12,000 people for perspective. Each day, people line up before the doors open.“If it wasn’t for places like this, I’d go hungry most of the time,” Art said. Art is one of the people who came down to get food, something people can do once a month from this nonprofit. The process starts with some basic questions about your job, household and cooking abilities. Then they are allowed to pick two breads while the volunteers pack a larger bag accordingly.“Most of the people you see here wouldn’t eat if it wasn’t for places like this,” Art said. Art currently lives out of his car. “Construction or I work in restaurants, I’ll wash dishes, you know anything. Usually in the summer I try to work two jobs so I can save up for the time off,” he said. “Most tourism jobs are more of an entry-level position, a lot of them are part-time,” Huddleston said. “These jobs really aren’t intended for family breadwinners.” This is a situation Branson and other tourism-focused towns face.“Branson is kind of a perfect storm of tourism and poverty,” said Bryan Stallings, the executive director at Elevate Branson. The nonprofit helps people learn job skills. “Low paying wages, seasonal unemployment, no transportation system and no affordable housing,” Stallings explained. “It’s kind of created this perfect storm for poverty.” As people with low incomes looked to find other places to live, weekly rate motels flourished. But recently, there’s been trouble there too.“Over 40 of these motels we’ve seen about 16 of them close,” Stallings said. “Which is putting a squeeze on places to live for folks.” He said the town is 1,300 units short on affordable housing units. “One of the things we are trying to work with particularly is moving people out of hotel and motel rooms that have been serving as their apartment,” Lynn Berry said. She said while she sees a lot of people draw unemployment this time of year, Branson is doing better. “Truly back in the day, you could shoot a cannon down Main Street after October 31, and not hit anyone until about April 1,” she said. Local restaurants like Big D’s BBQ have come up with solutions to help maintain business in the winter. “We do [pull] back our schedule to some extent, we do close one day of the week here in the restaurant,” said Dana Peterson, the owner Big D’s BBQ. They feed up to a couple thousand people a day in the summer. During the winter, that number is in the hundreds. “It’s our core group of people that maintain the full employment, not our seasonal help when staff is at full capacity,” he said.Lynn said they’ve brought in more museums and other activities to do in town during bad weather or the parks off seasons, to help create more interest in coming to Branson during the winter. “Museums were probably the biggest hit for us,” she said.Branson continues to look for ways to make the town more year round, and keep people working. “It’s going to take all of us working together in our community to solve some of these issues,” Stallings said. 4120

CORYDON, Ind. — “We’re probably behind the times a little bit, but we’re a close-knit, tight community,” said Sherry Watson, the owner of Kent Java Bar Coffee. Welcome to Corydon: a small town in southern Indiana, just over the border from Kentucky. “It’s really dull most of the time, so it’s important to have these local flavors," said Alexander Laske, who lives in town. They’re known for a few things. The site of the original capital of Indiana, a small skirmish in the civil war — and Butt Drugs.“Yes, I love Butt Drugs,” said Kathy White, a customer. “Oh yeah, Butt Drugs are great,” said Frank Law, another customer. “We all definitely heart our Butt drugs, they have a lot of fannies,” Laske said. Butt Drugs is probably not what you think it is. It’s an old-fashioned pharmacy, owned by Katie Butt-Beckort. She’s the third-generation Butt to run the place. “I started working when I was 9, behind the cash register. But professionally I started working in 2002,” said Butt-Beckort. Katie’s grandfather, William “Blackie” Butt, opened the store in 1952. It’s a full-service pharmacy with an old-fashioned soda counter and they sell 35-cent coffee. The name is just the cherry on top. “I try to know everyone’s name, yes, and I try to learn it by the second or third visit,” said employee Katie McGraw. Believe it or not, in town, the name isn’t their biggest draw. It’s the store’s priority on family friendly service. Katie McGraw works the front and she knows which customers like their bags stapled and which ones don’t. “We have a lot of customers that have shopped here their whole life, they’ve never shopped anywhere else. Their kids come here, their grandkids come here, their great-grandkids, so we just like to make it feel like a family atmosphere here,” she said. And It really is a family affair. Katie’s mom, Julie McGraw, has been a pharmacy tech for Butt’s for more than 25 years. “They have always been a pleasure to work for, they have always treated me like family,” said Julie McGraw. That family atmosphere has paid off. The independent pharmacy fills more than 2,000 prescriptions a week. Which helps stave off the competition. “We have a CVS, a Walgreens and a Walmart all within a mile and a half of here. And they’ve been here for years,” said Butt-Beckort. While the family friendly store has held off the big brands, it still finds its more risque side. “Yeah so she had a good base, we had t shirts, we had the classic 'I love Butt Drugs.' I mean that’s been a cornerstone for years,” said Trista Melton, who runs the drugstore’s marketing. While they were embracing their name before, the pharmacy is really turning it into an opportunity. “I think my best thing is making the Butt Liquors logo,” Melton said. “We’ve always sold liquor. People say, 'oh, well you just started selling liquor. ' No, we’ve had a three-way license for years, but we renamed that department Butt Liquors. Because we can,” said Butt-Beckort. “We took some things that have always been big here, like free parking in the rear," Melton said. “Funny, but you know, also real. Used to (be) you had to pay to park in downtown Cordyn, it was like , that was a big deal.” And customers, whether from town or tourists, love it. “Everyone loves Butt Drugs,” one customer said in the store. “Classic, it’s a one-of-a-kind, that’s for sure,” White said. So much so, that they can’t keep merchandise on the shelf. “I mean, we have to order shirts in every single week, we cannot keep them in stock,” Melton said. And the online store keeps things moving for those who can’t make it to Indiana. “We’ve shipped to six countries, so we’re kind of a worldwide thing,” Melton said. That makes everyone — from the employees to the owner — proud to work at Butt Drugs. “If I go out and meet new people and they ask where I work, I’m always proud to say it — Butt Drugs — and get a little bit of a look like, 'what did you say?' ” McGraw said.“Really, you know there’s a lot of people with the last name Butt in this world, I think we might be the only Butt Drugs though,” Butt-Beckort said. 4133

LAPLACE, La. – On a cool, overcast day, the sounds of an unfolding uprising pierced the quiet of a winding country road in rural Louisiana. “Freedom or death,” the crowd chants. “We want our freedom!” This is a reenactment of the largest slave rebellion ever seen in the U.S. In 1811, along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, hundreds of slaves gathered in the “German Coast Uprising.” They headed to New Orleans marching 26 miles towards the city, with huge goals. “They wanted to seize all of Orleans territory and set up an African republic in the new world. It would've been a sanctuary for Africans and people of African descent. It was the most radical vision of freedom in the history of this country,” said New York City artist Dread Scott, who organized the reenactment. Part community performance, part documented art project, the reenactors marched 26 miles on Friday and Saturday, retracing the rebellion’s steps and trying to bring attention to a part of history virtually unheard of – both back in 1811 and now. “Reenacting the slave rebellion has everything to do with excavating this history, so people know the history, but also people thinking about how we get free today,” Scott said. Jordan Rome came down from Chicago to participate in it. She is one the of reenactment’s trainers, teaching participants how to move, act and speak for the event. “I think people are really thirsty for that knowledge – for our history to present itself in a more nuanced way, not so black and white,” Rome said. Blake Gilpin is an associate professor of history at Tulane University. He’s taught his students about the German Coast Uprising, some of whom were initially unaware of it. “The German Coast Uprising is probably has a better claim to the most fully realized slave rebellion in American history – as in the one that came closest to succeeding,” he said. The uprising was eventually stopped – militias and law enforcement intercepted them before they reached New Orleans. The rebellion’s leaders were beheaded, with their heads placed on spikes, spread up and down the Mississippi River as a warning to other slaves. Gilpin said it’s a part of history getting a second look, along with the fight over whether to remove Confederate monuments across the South. New Orleans removed several in 2017. “I think it's that's the whole thing about these histories being kept very separate. You know the Confederacy has been sort of washed clean of the thing that it was actually fighting for, which was to keep enslaving human beings,” Gilpin said. “That trying to connect those things actually makes us understand everybody involved so much better.” It is a renewed look at the past in the present, as history marches on. “People are reexamining history and it's actually, you know, sort of a movement from below,” Scott said, “and that's a really good thing.”For more information on the slave rebellion reenactment, 2939
