(KGTV) -- A local animal sanctuary is mourning the loss of Shadow the leopard.Shadow first came to Lions Tigers & Bears in Alpine four years ago after being rescued from a defunct animal sanctuary in South Dakota.Unfortunately, Shadow was plagued with health issues, including skin disease and leaky heart valves.The leopard’s health continued to deteriorate this year, and Lions Tigers & Bears officials decided to put Shadow down this weekend.Shadow is the second big cat the Alpine sanctuary has lost in two weeks; on Oct. 26, a tiger killed another when they were accidentally brought into close contact with one another. 656

A woman is suing Waffle House after saying she was served bleach in a drink she got from a restaurant in Georgia.Atavian Moore sued the restaurant chain Oct. 27, claiming the incident has cost her ,000 in medical bills so far, according to Atlanta's WSB-TV.Moore claims that when she was eating at a Waffle House in Lithonia, Georgia in October 2015, she was given a drink that had bleach in it. She assumes the bleach got in her drink after the restaurant cleaned its drink dispenser.WSB reported that Moore's lawsuit claimed she suffered injuries to her esophagus, stomach and other internal body parts because of the potentially deadly cocktail.According to the National Capital Poison Center, swallowing small amounts of bleach can cause mouth irritation and vomiting but when someone swallows a large amount of the chemical it can cause more serious problems.Clint Davis is a reporter for the Scripps National Desk. After months of being unable to splurge on things like a vacation or even a night at the movies, experts say many Americans have hit a point of “frugal fatigue.” In fact, a new report by Comscore Inc. shows impulse spending is at the highest ever.With store closures and in-person shopping concerns, many consumers have moved more of their spending online. On average, they’re now spending roughly 25% of their discretionary income there.“When people are cooped up at home, there’s the tendency for impulse buying,” said Greg McBride, the Chief Financial Analyst at Bankrate.com.“I think the pandemic has moved us forward seven years in the last seven months, in terms of certain trends particularly towards digital,” he added.While online shopping has been around for a long time, McBride explained that in the last seven months, more retailers have gone online. Those already there have invested significantly in making their shopping experience easier and more convenient, so that people could spend more and more often.An easier online shopping experience eliminates the "old buffer" of someone getting in their car, driving and browsing around their favorite stores. The old way provided time to reconsider a purchase or how much to spend.“The tendency for emotional or impulsive purchasing can be really devastating towards your financial goals and unwind a lot of progress you may have otherwise already made,” McBride added.A little impulse spending won’t hurt, but these numbers are concerning some experts like McBride.“It’s really important to identify what is your trigger? Is it sadness, is it boredom, is it 'Keeping up with the Jones?’” he said. “Then developing strategies that can distract you from that.”Two simple strategies he suggests are, first, do not show up without a list or only shop for specific item. This goes for in-store shopping and, especially, online.Secondly, you should set a personal threshold for spending and impose a 24-hour waiting period for purchases above that threshold. After 40 years of making wishes come true, Make-A-Wish America is celebrating something else.The organization chose to celebrate through the eyes of one California teen who had one special and unique wish.Just like a summer camp, Kamp Karina has an activity list that's packed full of fun with dancing, magic, science, and even storytime. All of it was Karina's idea and wish.“The guy who does Olaf’s voice! He appeared there and I was like what the heck! That I had no idea of it surprised me and it made me really happy. It was a shocking moment and it made me really happy,” Karina said.The 16-year-old Central California teen was surprised because, when granted an experience from Make-A-Wish, she really one had one thing in mind.“I actually didn’t know what I wanted to wish for. All I know is I wanted to give, not get,” Karina said.Karina says she's finally free. After seven months of brutal treatment for Lymphoma, she feels like herself again and wants to focus on things she loves, like music and cooking. But her wish is always to help others because she can relate.“I know how it feels to be sick and not have any idea if you’re going to make it or what’s next or - it’s hard, mentally and physically,” Karina said.Karina is part of a new generation of kids who want something bigger, who wants more than receiving something or meeting someone.“But the newest wish kids, which is so inspired, want to go to the fifth idea which is give,” Make-A-Wish CEO Richard Davis said. said. “Karina is embodiment of that. She wanted to give kids a day to forget they're sick.”And so Karina’s wish was granted, and it worked. Hundreds of children from around the country like youths in Connecticut, Florida, South Dakota, California, got to attend Kamp Karina virtually.“We’re introducing a sense of philanthropy and love and care and if you think the world needs anything right now, and I know we need a lot of things, but this hope and the spirit of people working around a child to make their life better is about the most wonderful antidote for anything we’re dealing with that I can think of,” Davis said.Make-a-Wish grants 15,000 wishes a year across America to children who medically qualify. Most of the time, the wish is easily granted.“My favorite ones are the simple ones: I want a dog. I want a blue guitar,” Davis said. “I want to be mayor for a day.”And above all else, it's what comes with that wish that makes Make-A-Wish magical.“We bring families into this right away because it changes the outcome, it certainly changes the trajectory it gives them something to look forward to,” Davis said.When asked if her wish came through, Karina said. “Yes. One month before the casserole's customary time to shine, the woman who created it has passed away.Dorcas Reilly was 92 and died of Alzheimer's disease on October 15 in Camden, New Jersey, the Hinski-Tomlinson Funeral Home told CNN.Reilly was one of the first full-time members of Home Economics department at Campbell's. That's where she came up with what the company calls "the mother of all comfort foods" in 1955.She simply combined green beans and Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup, and called it "Green Bean Bake.""Dorcas would often share that the first time she made her famous recipe, it did not receive the highest rating in Campbell's internal testing," the company said in a statement.But she kept at it. And today, the casserole is a holiday feast must-have.Dorcas left Campbell in 1961 to be a full-time mom but returned in 1981 to serve as manager of the Campbell's Kitchen, a position she held until her retirement in 1988.In 2002, Campbell donated Dorcas' original recipe card to the National Inventors Hall of Fame.She leaves behind her husband, Tom; her son and daughter; their spouses; four grandchildren; a great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins. 1305
