TASHKENT, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Sunday that China is willing to expand cooperation with Uzbekistan on wide-ranging issues while meeting with Uzbek President Islam Karimov.     "Uzbekistan, as a country with important influence in central Asia, plays a major role in regional affairs, and developing a friendly partnership with Uzbekistan is one of the priorities of China's foreign policy," said Li.     "China is willing to work together with Uzbekistan to constantly solidify the friendship and political trust between the two countries, make efforts to expand pragmatic bilateral cooperation in all fields, and increase exchanges in culture, education, health and sports," he added. Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (R) meets with Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov in Tashkent June 28, 2009.    China also aims to enhance coordination and cooperation with Uzbekistan within multi-lateral frameworks like the United Nations and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, said the Chinese official.     Li said China is thankful to Uzbekistan for its support on issues that were deemed critical to China's core interests and on other major issues and promised China will continue to support Uzbekistan for its efforts to defend national independence and sovereignty, develop its economy and safeguard its national security and stability.     On the global financial crisis, Li pointed out China has taken appropriate fiscal and monetary measures to spur economic growth and the Chinese economy is stabilizing.     He noted bilateral trade between China and Uzbekistan is still growing rapidly despite the financial crisis and suggested the two sides increase exchanges on government policies to help each other deal with the crisis.     Top leaders and senior officials of China and Uzbekistan have met on a regular basis in recent years. The two also met during the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing.     Meanwhile, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao paid his first official visit to Uzbekistan in November 2007 after attending a meeting of the prime ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization countries held in the Uzbek capital Tashkent.     Karimov said he treated Li's visit to his country is another example of the close relations between the leaders of the two countries.     He said Uzbekistan values its relationship with China, admires China for its development.     He also expressed deep thanks to China for its longtime support and help.     The Uzbek president then outlined new areas for further cooperation between Uzbekistan and China.     "Uzbekistan and China have made major progress on bilateral economic and trade cooperation, but there is much potential for further developing and deepening that cooperation," he said.     He suggested the two countries explore new ways of cooperation, map out a medium and long-term framework for cooperation and enhance bilateral economic and trade cooperation in an all-around way through effective mechanism and joint projects of strategic importance.     He said Uzbekistan will continue to support China's position on issues related to Taiwan, Tibet and human rights and will work together with China to promote regional peace and stability.     Li arrived in Tashkent on Saturday for a three-day official visit to Uzbekistan. MOSCOW, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Senior representatives on security issues from the BRIC countries met in Moscow on Friday ahead of an upcoming summit on relations and cooperation within the bloc.     Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo briefly commented on the current international situation and called for enhanced cooperation from the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - in dealing with major global and regional issues. URUMQI, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said Tuesday that ethnic unity was the "basic benefit" for all the people in Xinjiang.     "Ethnic unity is the basic benefit for the 21 million people of various ethnic groups in Xinjiang... and these people have a long tradition of loving and supporting each other," Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit told Xinhua in an interview in Urumqi Tuesday.     Abdul'ahat Abdulrixit, an ethnic Uygur, was born in 1942 in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1960 and was elected CPPCC National Committee vice chairman in 2008. BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) -- China will continue its massive elimination of backward industrial facilities in 2009 to save energy and cut pollution in its bid to address climate change, the government said Friday.     China aims to close down small coal-burning power stations with a total generating capacity of 15 million kilowatts, according to an action plan approved by a joint meeting of the national steering committee for responses to climate changes and the State Council steering committee for energy-saving and emission control Friday.     China will continue to eliminate obsolete capacity in key industries, including 10 million tonnes in iron-making industry, 6million tonnes in steel industry, and 50 million tonnes in cement industry, said the plan examined at the meeting presided by Premier Wen Jiabao.     The meeting decided to adopt more measures, including stricter energy efficiency and environmental assessments, to control the expansion of industries that consumed excessive energy and discharged pollutants. (Xinhua/Pang Xinglei)    The government also called for the promotion of recycling and the use of energy efficient products, including subsidizing purchases of energy-efficient air conditioners, refrigerators and lamps.     Central and local governments would further increase investment in energy efficient projects.     In 2009, such projects are expected to reduce energy consumption equal to 750 million tonnes of standard coal usage. New sewage treatment projects will treat 10 million cubic meters of waste water.     The government would also publicize local government efforts to reduce energy consumption, improve supervision and enhance cooperation with international agencies to develop alternative energies and low-carbon technologies.     The government has set a goal to reduce energy consumption per 10,000 yuan (1,464 U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) by 20 percent from 2006 to 2010.     In the three years to 2008, energy consumption per unit of GDP fell 10.1 percent, according to the State Council. That means saving 300 million tonnes of standard coal and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 750 million tonnes.     Emissions of sulfur dioxide in the same period fell 8.95 percent, and chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution, was down 6.61 percent.

BEIJING, May 14 (Xinhua) -- Two revised rules involving a planned Nasdaq-style stock market, the Growth Enterprise Market (GEM), will take effect on June 14, according to the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) Thursday.     The two rules involve establishing an independent committee to approve listings for the GEM and the management of sponsors of IPOs.     The two rules are taken as a key step closer toward introducing the much-anticipated GEM, a board intended to nurture innovation-driven start-ups as the government tries to help smaller companies get financing and encourage technological advances.     The rules are the same as the drafts issued on April 17 to solicit public opinions, said the CSRC.     Under the rules, the new panel will have 35 members. Five will come from the CSRC and the others from the accounting, law and other sectors. The panel won't include members of the review panel for IPO application on the main board.     Under the rules, the sponsors of IPOs on the GEM are required to monitor the companies' performance for three years, up from two for companies on the main board.
