SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two separate studies show flu and pneumonia vaccines may reduce your risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future. The findings were presented on Monday during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, which was held virtually for the first time because of COVID-19. The conference was supposed to be in Amsterdam this year.In one study, researchers found that getting a flu shot showed a 17% reduction in the development of the disease. The earlier people got the vaccine, the better the protection against the disease.“Each year, successively, if they did get another flu shot they got more reduction, so almost up to a 30 to 35% of a reduction of the development of dementia, just by getting the flu shot,” said Katie Croskrey, the executive director of the San Diego/Imperial chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. In a separate study, researchers found similar reductions for developing dementia for those that received a pneumonia vaccine between the ages of 65 and 75.“You had a reduction of almost 40% of not developing dementia,” said Croskrey.Croskrey said these studies are just the starting point for more research to find out how the vaccines are correlated to reducing the risks of the disease. More research is also needed to determine if just getting the vaccines alone reduce the risk, or if it has to do more with lifestyle changes. Also announced on Monday, research that shows that individuals with dementia are six times more likely to die after infections than those that do not have dementia. The virtual international conference continues on Tuesday, where researchers are expected to discuss blood biomarkers that could identify a person with a potential for developing Alzheimer’s up to 20 years before any symptoms appear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - UC San Diego Police sent out a warning to Faculty and Staff about a series of burglaries this week.  The email states the thefts occurred at occupied and unlocked apartments.  There were three cases of break-ins and attempted break-ins that took place in campus housing complexes. There was another report of a car break-in. But UC San Diego police say the San Diego Police Department is working on nearly 30 burglary cases in the similar area. According to UCSD Police, on Tuesday, a woman at The La Jolla Del Sol apartments reported getting out of the shower and finding a female intruder. The resident yelled, and the thief took off with a backpack, cell phone, purse, and laptop.   On Sunday, a resident at the Mesa Nueva Apartments reported a male intruder removing the screen from his living room window.   On Monday a similar report out of the Sixth College Apartments for undergraduates. In both cases, the resident interrupted the break-ins, and the suspect took off. They are working with San Diego police to determine whether they are connected to any of their 30 or so burglary cases. The email alert to UCSD students and faculty gave the following general crime prevention tips:If you are the victim of a burglary or you discover someone inside your residence:  1351

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - While America's current border with Mexico has stood since 1848, the wall — or "barrier" — between the two countries is not as old.The divide has seen patchwork fencing over much of the area, largely leading to President Donald Trump calling for a new wall to be constructed. Here's how the current U.S.-Mexico border stands:THE CURRENT WALL...The current barrier between the U.S. and Mexico was settled in the Boundary Treaty of 1970. The treaty resolved any pending differences the countries had regarding the dividing line. This physical border stretches 654 miles from California into Texas, until hitting 1,300 miles of borderless separation. The full border, however, runs from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico.Congress passed the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which called for a permanent wall to be constructed along the U.S.-Mexico border, along with technologic improvements in surveillance and security. Work was terminated, however, in 2010 to divert funds toward other projects, according to the Washington Post.RELATED: Customs and Border Protection details reasons for San Diego border wall testingThe act only saw 640 miles of border wall construction completed, leaving the rest of the U.S. border separated by ineffective or aging fencing, and natural barriers.Homeland Security says the coverage, and lack thereof, is broken up as follows: 1406

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — WWE Wrestler John Cena paid his friend and rookie Padres pitcher, Logan Allen one dollar, after losing a bet he made a year and a half ago. The signed dollar was handed to Allen at the Ceremonial First Pitch, a day after the 22-year-old made his Major League debut at Petco Park. Allen's debut performance on the Major League mound Tuesday was nothing short of stellar. Off the mound, he also hit a single to right field, helping his own cause in a 4-1 victory for the Padres. This his was the game that changed Logan Allen's life forever, and earned him a dollar from John Cena. It all started in January 2018, when the then-Minor Leaguer had a chance encounter with Cena at a Tampa Steak House. The two clicked and made a bet. "How can I create a situation, not to have Logan fail? But to face him with the concept of failure? I bet him a dollar that he would not make it into the Major Leagues," Cena said to the Padres. They shook on it and kept in touch. Fast forward to Tuesday, and John Cena was in the Owner's Box, witnessing his friend deliver seven shutout innings. After walking off the mount, the 13-time WWE Champion was seen giving his friend a standing ovation. Allen received a long, emotional hug from his teammates. In a post-game interview with 10News, Allen said it was a day he will never forget, thanks to a unique friendship and a fun little bet. "He [Cena] is a selfless, unbelievable human being that is almost too good to believe. But he is the man, he portrays on off the screen or the ring or whatever he is doing," Allen said. 1582
