(KGTV) - Naval Criminal Investigative Services announced Friday the arrests of two additional Marines and a sailor, bringing the total of troops suspected of human smuggling and drug-related offenses to 19. Sixteen of the service members were taken into custody Thursday at Camp Pendleton during Battalion formation, a gathering of some 800 troops, U.S. Marine Corps officials said. An additional eight troops were questioned about drug offenses unrelated to the arrests, said Maj. Kendra Motz, 1st Marine Division Communication Strategy Operations Director. Two of the detainees were later arrested, said officials.“The Commanding Officer of 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment will act within his authority to hold the Marines accountable at the appropriate level, should they be charged,” said Motz. Byron Darnell Law II and David Javier Salazar-Quintero on July 3 near the Tecate Port of Entry, according to a federal complaint . Both men are charged with smuggling “for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain,” the complaint said. Agents said three undocumented immigrants got into the Marines’ vehicle on Interstate 8, according to the complaint. A 3-year-old Mesa, Arizona boy was found crying next to his passed out father near a Mesa business.Mesa police report that on May 11, they responded to a business near Stapley Drive and Baseline Road for a man unconscious outside a business. An employee found 33-year-old David Rodriguez passed out with his 3-year-old son standing next to him, crying. Police woke up Rodriguez, but he reportedly kept dozing off as police were questioning him. He did not know where he was or how he got there. He also could not tell police how old his son was. Police located his car in the parking lot with the keys still in the ignition. They also allegedly found several open beer cans in the vehicle. Rodriguez has been charged with child abuse. 777

A 17-year-old high school senior was killed, and another student was wounded on Wednesday during a shooting at Huffman High School in Birmingham, Alabama, according to Al.com. "We're not just talking about some person, we're talking about losing a part of our future,'' Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin told Al.com. "Our hearts are heavy."The surviving student, who is a junior at the school, is reportedly a member of the high school's football team. He was released from the hospital by Wednesday evening, and was also questioned by police.The high school senior's family identity has not been released as authorities are in the process of notifying family members. Birmingham Police Sgt. Bryan Shelton told reporters on Wednesday that the shooting appears to have been accidental. A 2,000 foot-long floating pipe nicknamed Wilson is about to start its mission to collect all the plastic in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.Last month, the Ocean Cleanup foundation launched the world's first ocean cleanup system out of San Francisco to take on the notorious "Great Pacific Garbage Patch," a giant floating trash pile between San Francisco and Hawaii that is twice the size of Texas. It's the largest of five ocean trash piles on Earth.The pipe is set to arrive at its destination in the ocean on Tuesday and begin the cleanup process soon after, according to a company spokesperson.The pipe, which is in the shape of a U, features a 3-meter deep net underneath it to trap floating plastic under the water's surface. A boat will return to the spot every couple of months to remove the debris -- like a garbage truck for the ocean -- and return it to shore.
