SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's already been one year since the San Diego Zoo Safari Park saw the first southern white rhino born through artificial insemination arrive at its park.Edward turned one-year-old on July 28, celebrating with a party at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center with his mother Victoria, 8-month-old female calf Future, and her mother Amani."Even though he doesn’t know it’s his birthday, it is very special to see Edward – a healthy, robust rhino - running around, enjoying his special treats," said Barbara Durrant, director of Reproductive Sciences at San Diego Zoo Global. "We aren’t just celebrating his birthday but also are celebrating the significance of his birth."Edward was born last year after hormone-induced ovulation and artificial insemination with frozen semen from southern white rhino Maoto on March 22, 2018. Victoria gave birth 16 months later. Edward's birth was the zoo's first successful attempt to birth a southern white rhino via artificial insemination and a critical step toward recovering its distant cousin, the northern white rhino. Currently, only two northern white rhinos exist in the world and both are female.Researchers believe that a northern white rhino calf could be born from artificial insemination within 10 to 20 years. 1313

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local and federal authorities raided four San Diego County homes Wednesday as part of a money laundering investigation.Agents served one of those warrants at an El Cajon home at about 7 a.m., according to neighbors. Agents could be seen removing several items from the property. 10News observed agents searching through the first and second floors of the home. Neighbors told 10News agents made requests over a speaker for the home's residents to exit the property. Neighbors added that eventually, the announcements stopped and they heard what they described as a small explosion, before agents entered the home in tactical gear.RELATED: Ex-Wells Fargo banker indicted for money laundering appears in courtLauren Mack, with the Department of Homeland Security, told 10News the raid was one of five instances in which agents served search warrants as part of an investigation into a suspected money laundering conspiracy. Customers are flocking to buy ammunition before a new California gun law goes into effect. It’s called the “1 million round month.” Just a few hours after opening its doors, Poway Weapons and Gear Range sold half of their 1.2 million rounds of ammo. “Today is a direct reflection of the law,” says Danielle Rudolph, Director of Sales at Poway Weapons and Gear Range. “People are trying to stock up and save up now that way they don’t have to worry about it next year.” The new law starting in July says in addition to a gun permit, gun owners will have to pass another background check to buy ammunition. Retailers will then have to log the amount of ammo gun owners purchase in a database. The records will be sent to the Department of Justice. When asked about the store’s large sale, Ron Marcus with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence said in part: “The bottom line is regardless of how people try to prepare themselves before the law goes into effect, majority of Californians voted on Prop. 63 that put these laws into effect."Store owners say they will order more ammunition for customers to purchase at a reduced price. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It was more than a decade after two-year-old Jahi Turner disappeared.His mother, Tameka, had been posted on deployment with the U.S. Navy in 2002. Step-dad Tieray Jones claimed the boy vanished while playing with other kids at a park in Golden Hill, while Jones was buying a drink at a vending machine.Police thought otherwise, suspicious that Jones had severely punished the boy for bed-wetting and he died. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Infrastructure improvements will halt Coaster and Amtrak rail service this weekend in San Diego County.During the March 3 - 4 closures, neither Amtrak or Metrolink will be available to commuters in Oceanside, according to North County Transit District (NCTD). Connecting bus service will require an Amtrak reservation, however.There will be no connecting bus service for Coaster commuters, though passengers can use Breeze Route 101 or MTS connecting service, NCTD says.10NEWS TRAFFIC CONDITIONSCoaster and Amtrak service will be canceled on March 10 - 11 as well due to an emergency exercise. The exercise will be held at the Carlsbad Poinsettia Coaster Station from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Those in the immediate area should expect to see emergency vehicles.On the Friday following each closure, southbound Amtrak Rail 2 Rail trains A792 and A796, scheduled to depart Oceanside at 10:05 p.m. and 12:01 a.m., will complete their trips to Santa Fe Depot, but Amtrak train A590 will be canceled.The Monday following each closure, rail service will re-open, though trains may be delayed up to fifteen minutes.For future closure information, visit NCTD's website. 1196
