CHICAGO — Millions of frontline healthcare workers are rolling up their sleeves for the first of a two-dose COVID-19 vaccine. First out is Pfizer’s vaccine, and now, an FDA panel has recommended Moderna’s vaccine for emergency use authorization. The available Pfizer shot requires a complex and precise procedure for it to work. Before the needle even breaks the skin, a strict protocol must be followed precisely.“We're going to put it take it from the negative 80 ultra-low storage and we're gonna defrost it to refrigerator temperatures,” explained Erin Shaughnessy, director of pharmacy at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. “That's gonna give us five days of stability for the vaccine.”It’s like something out of Mission Impossible.“We installed additional security cameras and we have additional security protocols,” said Shaughnessy. She’s charged with ensuring the vaccine is securely handled and properly prepped before it’s injected.“We don't want to risk wasting any of the drugs,” she said. “The stuff is liquid gold right now.”That liquid gold must be stored at 80 below zero, in a secure location that only a few pharmacists have access to.“We have to take it out of the ultra-low freezer and move it to a refrigerator just to thaw for three hours.”Once thawed, it cannot be re-stored.“You can't put the medication back into the freezer,” said Shaughnessy. “Once inside, you have to use it or you're going to lose it. It's gonna have a five-day refrigerated expiration.”Pfizer’s vaccine protocol also requires the vaccine to be protected from UV light and the dilution must be gently inverted exactly 10 times. Shaken too hard, says Shaughnessy, and it could go bad.“It's very, very specific," she explained. That’s when the clock starts ticking.“Once they're thawed and reconstituted, basically diluted down to make the actual doses, then that's when we have six hours on the clock going from that dilution point into someone's arm,” said Luke Hvass, a clinical pharmacist at Rush. Each dose is recorded and logged. It’s a symphony of procedures that must come together like clockwork.“It's a lift for a lot of hospitals, a lot of organizations, but I think it's a challenge everybody is ready to rise to because everyone is so excited about getting this vaccine process started,” said Shaughnessy. The Department of Health and Human Services has expanded the scope of who can act as vaccinators. In addition to pharmacists, interns, pharmacy students and pharmacy technicians who complete 20 hours of training will be added to the vaccination workforce to help handle the massive undertaking. 2619

CHANDLER, Okla. – Investigators say they were able to use DNA from a discarded cigarette butt to crack a 33-year-old cold case. The Oklahoma Attorney General's Office says the cigarette butt and latent prints were collected at a rest stop where Paul Aikman was found brutally stabbed to death in September of 1985.A DNA profile was developed from one of the cigarette butts, but the Lincoln County case eventually went cold.Last year, however, forensic scientists notified agents that they had found a potential DNA hit in the national DNA database. The DNA matched 55-year-old Earl Wilson, who is currently incarcerated in Oklahoma Department of Corrections custody for unrelated crimes.Criminalists say they then matched a print taken from the crime scene to Wilson.Attorney General Mike Hunter has now filed first-degree murder charges against Wilson.“Advances in DNA technology are allowing authorities to take another look at these difficult cases,” said Hunter. “Just because cases go cold doesn’t mean someone shouldn’t be held responsible, even after three decades.”The director of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, Ricky Adams, says Aikman’s family has suffered for 35 years, not know who was responsible for his murder.“35 years have passed, but we have not forgotten about Paul,” said Adams. “Thanks to science and determined police work by OSBI agents and our Cold Case Unit, we are pleased to announce that the suspect in Paul’s murder has been identified. I would like to give thanks Attorney General Hunter and his staff for taking this case, filing a murder charge and giving a voice to Paul and his family.” 1641

Camp Kangaroo is designed for students, inspiring and elevating children out of grief and propelling them forward. One of the campers is a sixth-grader, named Gunnar. He lost his father in 2015."He was going to his NA meeting, he was always going to help other people even though my dad hadn't drank or smoked for two years," he said on his way home, his father crashed head on with a school bus.Gunnar then moved in with his mom, who turned to drugs after his brother died in 2011."My mom didn't really care about me and I feel like she didn't love me. So my dad, he tried his best to take care of me. Once I lost him, he was my whole world, so that was like losing my whole world," Gunnar said.Gunnar fell into an unsafe life, feeling lost and unloved. He said he became ill, unable to speak, and his mom wouldn't take him to the hospital, saying he "was faking it." He said his sister nursed him back to health and credits her for him being here today.A therapist gave him a permanent way out."She told me about Camp Kangaroo and at first I didn't want to go but then she told me about all the activities here all the ways you can learn how to not grieve and I was like okay I'll give it a try. I came here and it was amazing, it was one of the best decisions of my life," he said. His sister said camp gave him his own voice and the courage to tell their mom he was moving out. "When he got back from camp he was able to say for the first time, 'I don't want to be with you, I want to be with them.' He was strong enough to do that because of this camp," sister Jaqueline Avila-Barajas said. This year 70 kids ages 5-17 attended Camp Kangaroo in Julian for free. Corporate sponsors and personal donations fund the camp. They have creative arts-based therapy, with music and sessions. Each child lost someone close to them, and had an in-home assessment before coming to camp to ensure the safety of every kid."They learn that death is a natural part of life, and they're not alone," National Director, Ryana Goldberger, said she hopes each child learns "they're stronger than they know, and put coping skills in their tool box so they can help others."Gunnar echoed these words, "don't ever think it's your fault, it's not, you couldn't have done a single thing to change that and don't ever give up hope. Your loved one would be proud of you right now no matter what situation you're in."The camp is 3-days long, and costs about 0 per child. Other nonprofits like Project Linus help make the kids feel at home while bunking in the mountains, providing things like blankets and t-shirts. The camp brings together children from San Diego, Orange County, San Bernardino and Los Angeles. Camp Kangaroo started in Chicago, and is a nationwide program, according to Goldberger. 2889
