SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County's unadjusted unemployment rate fell in September with multiple industries in the county showing employment increases, the California Employment Development Department announced Friday.San Diego County's overall unemployment rate fell two-10ths of a percent from 3.6 percent in August to 3.4 percent in September. The September rate was also lower than the county's unemployment rate one year ago, when it sat at 3.7 percent.Total nonfarm employment increased in September compared with August by 700 jobs while agricultural employment increased by 100 jobs. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The eighth annual U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Expo will kick off Saturday along Broadway Pier.The three-day event will feature a dozen of the best sand sculptors in the world, including artists from the U.S., the Netherlands, Canada, Russia and South Korea. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County has seen a nearly 5% increase in its response to the 2020 Census above the 2010 response rate, according to state census data.Data collected through Tuesday indicates 72.9% of county households have responded this year, as opposed to 68% in 2010, mirroring an increased response rate statewide.Census officials say that California's 2020 self-response rates surpassed the 2010 rate on Wednesday, with 68.4% of California households responding either online, by phone or mail. The 2010 rate was 68.2%.State census officials touted the success of their outreach campaign, particularly given California is considered one of the ``hardest-to-count'' states in the country due its size and a high number of people who are difficult to contact for census purposes, such as recent immigrants, people who lack high-speed internet access or people with limited English proficiency.Campaign efforts will continue until the Sept. 30 deadline.``It is through the collective efforts of millions of Californians that we have surpassed our 2010 self-response rate. But make no mistake -- we are not done yet. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Target Corp. has agreed to pay .4 million to resolve allegations that it violated terms of a 2011 judgment regarding the company's handling and disposal of retail hazardous waste, San Diego County District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Wednesday.``This settlement holds Target accountable for this second violation of environmental laws that involve the improper disposal of a long list of hazardous materials,'' Stephan said. ``This case serves as a reminder to corporations of the importance of environmental protection laws that safeguard the public's health and that violators will be held accountable.''The current settlement -- announced by Stephan, 21 other California district attorneys, the California Attorney General's Office and the city attorneys of San Diego and Los Angeles -- comes as a result of investigations that concluded the company committed violations by improperly disposing hazardous waste into landfills across California between 2012 and 2016. The waste included such items as electronics, batteries, aerosol cans, compact fluorescent light bulbs and medical waste, including syringes, over-the-counter and prescribed pharmaceuticals, as well as confidential medical information from its customers.``We are confident that with these strong injunctive terms and penalties, Target will implement meaningful changes to prevent this from ever happening again,'' said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra. ``However, the wise move for all companies is to abide by the law and employ proactive training and processes to help ensure that hazardous waste violations are avoided in the first place.''It's the second settlement resolving allegations of hazardous waste compliance violations by Target. "Through no fault of their own, COVID-19 highest risk entities have to stop indoor operations. While we know this step is vital to help slow the spread in our community, we want to step up and help those impacted..."Our goal for the million is to provide relief to restaurants, gyms and other entities that have been directly impacted by the indoor closures due to our county's purple tier status.
