BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- China must improve the quality, accuracy and credibility of statistics to better serve the country's social and economic development, said Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang in a letter addressed to a ceremony on Wednesday in Shanghai marking the first World Statistics Day.A relatively standardized modern statistics system that conforms to China's national conditions and international standards have basically taken shape in China, according to the letter received by Xinhua on Wednesday.Li said that as China will soon enter into the 12th five-year development period (2011-2015), it must push forward the development and reform of statistics gathering to provide accurate and comprehensive information in a timely way.Li also said the Chinese government will continue to strengthen international exchanges and cooperation in the realm of statistics.The World Statistics Day, initiated by the United Nations, aims to promote knowledge about statistics among the public.

DAMASCUS, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China's top political adviser Jia Qinglin arrived here Friday for an official friendly visit to Syria.In a written speech released at the airport, Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), hailed the development of bilateral ties between China and Syria since they established diplomatic relations in 1956."China attaches great importance to the friendly ties with Syria," he said, pledging joint efforts with Syria to enhance political mutual trust, boost traditional friendship, bolster substantial cooperation and promote common development.Jia said he was looking forward to exchanging views with Syrian leaders on the further development of bilateral relations and on major international and regional issues of common concern."I believe my visit will help the people of China and Syria better know each other and boost their friendship," he said.Syria is the first leg of Jia's four-nation tour from Oct. 29 to Nov. 11. VIENNA, Sept. 16 (Xinhua) -- China supported the proposal of establishing a Middle East nuclear-weapon-free zone, a senior Chinese diplomat said here Thursday.China had always stood by strengthening the international non- proliferation regime, and committed to advancing the universality, effectiveness and authority of the Treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), said Hu Xiaodi, China's permanent representative and ambassador to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Vienna.To this end, China supported building a Middle East nuclear- weapon-free zone, maintained Israel should join the NPT as a non- nuclear-weapon state at an early date, and put all its nuclear facilities under comprehensive safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Hu, who was addressing the IAEA board meeting, which started Monday."Meanwhile, all countries in the region should conscientiously fulfill NPT obligations, as well as sign and ratify the IAEA safeguards agreements and its Additional Protocols," Hu added.He went on to say China welcomed the proposal endorsed in the final document of the NPT Review Conference this May, which calls for convening an international conference in 2012 on the establishment of a zone free of nuclear weapons and all other weapons of mass destruction in Middle East.Hu also stressed the willingness of the Chinese to work with the international community for a non-nuclear-weapon area in the Middle East, and achieving peace and stability in the region.

BEIJING, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- There will be unrelenting efforts to crack down on activities such as illegal financing and pyramid selling by insurance agents, the China Insurance Regulatory Commission (CIRC) said Monday.The CIRC issued the statement on its website after two cases came to the attention of the insurance regulatory bureaus in Liaoning and Zhejiang provinces.In Liaoning, He Feng, head of the Chende Insurance Agent Company, was detained for collecting capital at high interest rates. In Zhejiang, the license of the Hangzhou Minfeng Insurance Agent Company Limited was canceled for luring policyholders by exaggerating prospective earnings.The CIRC reminded the public not to be misled by similar claims and encouraged them to report illegal activities to reduce their losses.
