ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — A fifth horse has died at Santa Anita this fall, the 35th overall fatality since Dec. 26 at the Southern California racetrack.G Q Covergirl injured both her front legs Friday on the training track. The 5-year-old mare was euthanized on the advice of the attending veterinarian.Trained by two-time Kentucky Derby winner Doug O'Neill, G Q Covergirl had six wins in 16 career starts and earnings of 0,730. She had won her last two starts and finished in the money in all of her six races this year. O'Neill also owned the mare in a partnership. The training track has caused the fewest number of breakdowns. However, there have been three deaths on it since the fall meet began on Sept. 27, including one that was believed to be a heart attack. The other two fatalities occurred during races.Santa Anita hosts the Breeders' Cup world championships next weekend. 891

As floodwaters started receding in central Texas, authorities discovered the body of a second victim in this week's deluge. The woman's body was found in Llano County, one of the areas inundated by the swollen Llano River, county officials said Wednesday. The woman's name has not been publicly released. On Tuesday, another body was found in the Colorado River in neighboring Burnet County, sheriff's office Capt. Tom Dillard said. Near-record flood levels swamped homes and caused a bridge to collapse. But there's a sliver of good news: While flood warnings are still in effect due to ongoing rain Wednesday, the Llano River's depth has dropped significantly."Right now, the Llano River is at about 12 ? feet, down from just shy of 40 feet yesterday," Llano County Emergency Management Coordinator Ron Anderson said Wednesday. 834

Americans are trying to form better financial habits in light of the recession, building emergency savings and paying down debt. However, many are finding savings accounts are now returning next to nothing in interest. That's because of the Federal Reserve's decision to keep interest rates low.Rates that were over 2.5% a year ago are down to under 1% now. But there are some other accounts that can get you a better return.“Something known as a rewards checking account might be a better option,” said Greg McBride, Chief Financial Analyst at Bankrate.com. “These are accounts that typically pay higher yields, higher than even online savings accounts, you might find 1.5, 2, 2.5%, but you have to meet certain qualifications each month to earn that deal.”Rewards checking accounts typically are offered by smaller community banks and credit unions. They usually come with monthly requirements though, like direct deposit, online bill pay, enrolling in e-statements, and using your debit card a certain amount of times. But those are things many people already use.In terms of saving versus paying down debt now, experts say to save.“That's really critical. No one knows what’s going to happen down the road in terms of jobs or income, so having some money put away will help you sleep at night,” said McBride.Just to give you an idea, you could make by saving around ,000 a year at 3% interest rate, which a rewards account might pay. That’s compared to just 60 cents in an average savings account, which only has about a .06% interest rate. 1556

AP VoteCast found roughly two-thirds of voters said their opinion of President Donald Trump — either for or against — was what drove their choice in the election. Only about a third said the same of his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden. The expansive poll showed that roughly 4 in 10 voters said the pandemic was the top priority facing the country. The economy followed close behind, with about 3 in 10 naming it as the most pressing issue. One area of concern for Trump is how voters saw the direction of the country. Nearly 63% of those in the early exit polls said the country was going in the wrong direction, compared to 37% who said it is in the right direction. 693

Amnesty International awarded Colin Kaepernick its Ambassador of Conscience Award on Saturday for his public protest against racial and social injustice."The Ambassador of Conscience award celebrates the spirit of activism and exceptional courage, as embodied by Colin Kaepernick," Salil Shetty, the human rights group's secretary-general, said in a statement. "He is an athlete who is now widely recognized for his activism because of his refusal to ignore or accept racial discrimination."The award is Amnesty International's highest honor, according to its website. Past winners include Nelson Mandela, Malala Yousafzai, U2, Alicia Keys and Ai Weiwei. Kaepernick was presented with the award at a ceremony in Amsterdam, Netherlands.Kaepernick, a former quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, became the subject of controversy when he kneeled during the national anthembefore several 2016 NFL preseason and regular-season games in protest of police shootings of African-American men and other social injustices faced by black people in the United States."To me, this is something that has to change," Kaepernick said in an August 2016 interview. "And when there's significant change and I feel like that flag represents what it's supposed to represent, and this country is representing people the way that it's supposed to, I'll stand."His protest, which inspired other players to participate, sparked national debate over issues of police brutality and racial and social injustice. He was also widely criticized for what many onlookers characterized as showing disrespect to the US flag.Kaepernick's kneeling drew the attention of President Donald Trump, who said during a September rally in Alabama that NFL owners should respond to the protests by firing the players."When high-profile people choose to take a stand for human rights, it emboldens many others in their struggles against injustice," Shetty said. "Colin Kaepernick's commitment is all the more remarkable because of the alarming levels of vitriol it has attracted from those in power."In March 2017, Kaepernick became a free agent, but has yet to be offered a contract from any NFL team. In October, he filed a grievance against the league, accusing team owners of colluding to keep him from being signed.Kaepernick said Saturday that he shares the award with "all of the countless people throughout the world combating the human rights violations of police officers, and their uses of oppressive and excessive force.""I am here to join with you all in this battle against police violence," he said.Since becoming a free agent last year, Kaepernick completed a September 2016 pledge to donate million to organizations working in what he called oppressed communities.Kaepernick was named GQ's Citizen of the Year in November and in December accepted the 2017 Sports Illustrated Muhammad Ali Legacy Award. He has also received the Eason Monroe Courageous Advocate Award from the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California in December. 3085
