SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A border officer admitted in court Wednesday to putting his hands around a person's neck and shaking them at the Calexico Port of Entry two years ago.U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer Esaul Bello, 53, pleaded guilty to using unreasonable force on the individual while on duty in the primary vehicle lane booth at the Calexico Port of Entry on Nov. 26, 2018.U.S. Attorney Office officials say during inspection, Bello placed both of his hands around the person's neck, even though they were not resisting. Officials say Bello then shook the person.The person was applying for admission to the U.S., officials said.As part of the plea, Bello agreed to resign from his position.“This is a rare and troubling situation,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “We will always move swiftly to protect the public from officers who use their power to violate another person's Constitutional rights.”Bello will be sentenced on June 2, 2020. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Barrio Logan business is on a mission to help students become the first in their family to go to college. Called the Barrio Logan College Institute, the business helps kids learn how to get into college. The program began in 1996 and helps students from third grade all the way through college. So far, 204 students have participated in the program. The programs offered are free, but parents are required to donate their time. The business began out of the need to help students in underserved communities. According to the institute, only three percent of adults age 25 and older in Barrio Logan have a bachelor’s degree. The institute also says only 38 percent of those 25 and older in the community have a high school diploma. Through the institute, many students have been able to go on to attend college. 88 percent of students who have gone through the Barrio Logan College Institute’s College Success Program remain in college working toward a degree. For now, the institute is focused on moving to a new location within the Barrio Logan Community, so far raising .1 million of the needed .5 million to buy the building. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 17-year-old boy accused of killing a Carlsbad woman on a popular hiking trail denied the allegations against him during a virtual arraignment Thursday morning.Through his attorney, the teen denied all allegations. He faces charges in connection with the Nov. 23 death of 68-year-old Lisa Thorborg.Thorborg was on a morning walk at Hosp Grove Trail when Carlsbad police investigators said she was attacked and stabbed to death.On Dec. 14, Carlsbad police announced the arrest of a 17-year-old boy in the case. Little information on the teen was released, but police noted the suspect is a Carlsbad resident.Thorborg's death struck a chord with many in the community. In the days following her death, a large group came to honor her by finishing the walk she started.The woman’s death also left many neighbors upset and concerned about their safety while on that trail.During Thursday’s arraignment, the judge also granted the teen's request to two phone calls -- one to his Mom, the other to his grandmother.ABC 10News learned Thorborg’s family was also listening to the hearing through the phone.Another hearing in the case is set for Dec. 22. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 10-year-old boy who allegedly fired two rounds from a shotgun at San Diego Police officers after barricading himself in a Southcrest backyard shed is in custody, police say.Family members at the home in the 4000 block of Boston Ave., about a block north of Caesar Chavez Elementary School, called police at about 9 a.m. after the 10-year-old armed himself with a knife and hammer.When police arrived, the child ran and hid in a shed with a shotgun, SDPD said. The child fired two rounds at officers, according to police, but no one was injured.The 10-year-old barricaded himself for nearly two hours, before surrendering to police peacefully.SDPD said the child will be taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.The shotgun was recovered at the scene, police said, and investigators plan to look into how the child came into possession of the weapon.10News is monitoring this breaking news story. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A Carlsbad company is contributing to Australia's relief efforts for some of the country's most vulnerable victims.North San Diego County's Oska Wellness sent several devices to an animal hospital in New Wales. Its goal is to help offer pain relief for severely burned koalas. The device, the Oska Pulse, uses electromagnetic pulses to help damaged cells heals. The goal is to speed up the recovery process to allow the animals begin rehabilitation sooner. 487
