Ford is partnering with the start-up Agility Robotics to see how a two-legged robot and self-driving vehicles can work together.The robot, named Digit, would be used to carry out the final step of getting your delivery from a car to your front door.Digit is a two-legged robot that looks and walks like a human. It's built out of lightweight material and capable of lifting packages that weight up to 40 pounds. Digit can go up and down stairs, walk through uneven terrain and react to things, like being bumped without losing balance and falling over.Digit can also tightly fold itself up in the back of a self-driving vehicle until it's called into action. Once a self-driving car arrives at its destination, Digit can be deployed to grab a package from the vehicle and carry out the final step in the delivery process.If Digit encounters an unexpected obstacle, it can send an image back to the vehicle and have the vehicle configure a solution. Ford is currently testing Digit in Detroit, Miami, Pittsburgh and Washington D.C. 1042

Four Michigan teens who pleaded guilty to throwing a rock off a highway overpass that killed a man were sentenced as adults in a Michigan courtroom on Tuesday.They were ages 15 to 17 when they threw rocks onto I-75 in October 2017 in Genesee County. They called it "overpassing." A six-pound rock went through the windshield of 32-year-old Kenneth White's car as he was driving, killing him. The teens were initially charged with charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter. They were being held in juvenile detention."The injuries are horrific. ... I gasped out (when I saw them)" Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said during the teens' trial in 2017.Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Farah sentenced Alexander Miller, Trevor Gray, Mikadyn Payne and Mark Sekelski to adult prison, rejecting their defense attorneys’ arguments they should be sentenced as juveniles.The judge gave them until Aug. 20 to withdraw their pleas. Their defense attorneys outside of court called the sentence emotional and political.The mother of the victim, Teresa Simpson, applauded the sentence in court and later said her son, “gets the justice he deserves. He’s happy now. He can rest.”The case pointed to the fifth teen, Kyle Anger, who was 18 at the time of the incident, as the one who planned the prank. He loaded up his pickup with rocks and threw the rock that killed White. He pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and faces several more years in prison when he is sentenced at a later date.Leyton said he didn't think the boys intended to kill anyone when they threw the rocks."I don't think they said, 'OK, we're going to kill Kenneth White when he comes hurtling down the road," Leyton said. "But I do think they said, 'We are going to throw a rock down at the next car that goes by and try to hit it.'"The four teens sentenced Tuesday could be out of prison sometime in 2020. FORT IRWIN, Calif. – The U.S. Army conducts tough realistic training at the Fort Irwin National Training Center in the deserts of California. There, you’ll find soldiers spending a 21-day rotation before they deploy overseas. “Our training area is bigger than the state of Rhode Island and its nickname is ‘The Box,’” said Sgt. Billy Dolan. “When they’re in ‘The Box,’ they’ll conduct 10 days of force on force training, followed by 10 days of live fire training,” said Lt. Kevin Lenahan. “This compound is supposed to give the rotational unit an urban fight.” According to the U.S. Army, the NTC training area contains an uncluttered electromagnetic spectrum and sprawls over 1,000 miles to facilitate large-scale maneuvering for Abrams tanks and other heavy wheeled and light mechanized vehicles. And, it possesses restricted airspace for aviation assets. This recipe cooks up the ideal site for the largest Army training exercises across the U.S. For some, they are conducting their final exercise prior to deployment. “A lot of my friends are getting deployed,” Dolan said. “Most of them are going to Syria or Afghanistan.” During one rotation, there are between 4,000 and 7,000 soldiers enduring intense training. “It gives the people who come here the first real world experience of what could happen without taking casualties,” Lenahan said. According to the U.S. Army, units are deployed to Fort Irwin for 21 days, 14 of which are spent in what is referred to as "The Box" (as in sandbox). It's the vast desert training area that includes 15 simulated towns and the previously mentioned tunnel and caves, as well as expansive gunnery ranges and tank battle arenas. NTC rotations incorporate a complex scenario design laden with social, ethical and moral dilemmas; the goal of which is to develop leaders while exposing them to multifaceted problems.
