SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego communities are known for their connections, especially local beach communities. They are surrounded with endless, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, and are a true hub for industry workers, who are also in a fragile time right now. Sandbox Pizza in Pacific Beach is an example of a restaurant stuck in limbo while helping prevent the spread of COVID-19. This past weekend, they held an event offering , 14-inch pizzas to all customers. RELATED: We're Open San Diego: Search what's still open"In a world where people often disagree, people can almost all that they like pizza," Marketing Manager for Sandbox, Thomas Yankle, said.Offering dollar pizzas was a small tactic with a big message. "It's trying times for everyone so we figured it was something fun and the least we could do to try and help everyone out, from families that are out of work, to industry employees, to our first responders," Yankle added. RELATED: San Diego restaurants aid most vulnerable during pandemicHe said as a both a resident and worker in Pacific Beach, the affect of coronavirus closures hit even harder."It's sad to see how this has effected a community of so many bartenders, servers and security. It hits home a little more because its people you see everyday that you're friends with," Yankle said. The dollar pizza party lasted two hours but created long-lasting memories that everyone needs at a time like this. "It was nice to see everyone smiling and happy and I think that's something all of us can agree that we miss," says Yankle. 1565

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Ross Rock, or as locals prefer "The Rock," has had its share of headgear. The lone rock just off the coast from Sunset Cliffs Boulevard has been the target of vandals in the past and has again been crowned, this time by a mermaid. It's not clear how the mermaid was installed on top of the rock. Its steep face makes it difficult for anyone brave enough to try and scale it.BACK IN 2006: San Diegans finding peace atop Ross Rock at Sunset CliffsPhotos from 10News Weather Watcher Jim Grant show the mermaid now in place, looking into Point Loma under the gray sky.10News reporter Travis Rice is looking into this story and will have more on 10News at 5 p.m.The mysteriously installed mermaid is just the latest object to grace "The Rock" at Sunset Cliffs. Placing objects on the Ross Rock has almost become a ritual. In 2006, a large pterodactyl had sat atop the rock before being washed away. A peace sign, the numbers "2010" — local graduates, perhaps? — a Christmas tree, a tiki head, and at one point, a toilet with a Raiders fan wedged inside have all been found taking refuge from the waves below. It remains unclear who makes the objects or how they have installed them in the past.Time and again, however, Mother Nature or possibly another vandal has removed what's been placed. 1359

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Restrictions in California due to the COVID-19 pandemic have forced many youth sports teams around San Diego County to head to other states to play games.Under current pandemic-related guidelines, youth sports teams in California have been limited to practices only. The restrictions have been frustrating for many parents and coaches.Anthony Lococo, a coach for San Diego travel baseball organization King Kong Baseball, said, "At this point, we thought we would be in a position where there would be a plan in place to get us back to playing. If I told you five or six months ago that we'd have to travel to play, I would have told you no way. I thought we would have had a plan in place by now."Rene Miramontes, director of coaching for local-based Crusaders Soccer, feels traveling to play in other states was bound to happen."In youth sports in particular, with no recourse, you have to start looking for options,” Miramontes said. Those options include heading east to places like Yuma, Arizona. In fact, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported about a recent baseball tournament in Yuma which featured 51 teams. Of those teams, 49 were from California."I gave it a couple months, with the plan that if we weren't open by October or November, we would have to look into going to other states," said Lococo.Since pandemic regulations went into effect in March, many youth tournaments in San Diego have been canceled, costing the city a lot of money. According to the U-T report, the amount of money lost could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars. Now, San Diego families are heading to places like Arizona and Utah for tournaments, and of course, absorbing the costs that come with it.Lococo plans to take his King Kong Baseball teams to Arizona in the next month."As a family, you are renting a hotel for one to two nights, depending on how long the tournament is. Price-wise, you're probably talking five, six, seven hundred dollars per family,” said Lococo.Of course, the most important thing is the safety of the young athletes. Which in turn brings about the discussion of whether playing games transmits the disease."In my opinion, there are no indicators that show us that," said Miramontes. "I see no reason why we are still in the no contact state." 2291

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County announced Wednesday if the county continues to hit state triggers with the spread of the coronavirus, museums, zoos and aquariums could be on the long list of closures Monday. The measures apply to any indoor activities.Balboa Park just reopened the Air and Space Museum two weeks ago, after everything closed down in March due to the pandemic."We want to make sure people come back to the park, it is the cultural heart of San Diego," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said this weekend more of our favorite museums are set to open. Friday the Science Center, the Veterans Museum, the Natural History Museum and the International Gift Shop are set to reopen, with three more museums opening Saturday July 4.The possibility those openings could be short-lived is something Comiskey says they're ready for."We're certainly hoping all the people of San Diego County are really able to pull together and make sure the infection rate and the case load and all these lovely metrics, these important metrics can be contained and can be controlled," he said hopefully.Comiskey said if they have to close Monday after putting so many precautions and time in to ensure the park is safe, they will.Looking to the future, he said they're brainstorming how to bring in money to help these cherished icons survive."I think as time goes on we need to look at what fund-raising is possible, I think we need to look with those organizations that rely on revenue through the gate." He said they will have conversations in the near future on supplementing the organizations' lost income. 1666

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said Thursday that the city is expected to see a major decline in tax revenue due to the coronavirus. Faulconer said the city usually takes in an estimated 0 million in sales tax throughout the fiscal year. This year, however, the city is expected to lose million in sales tax alone. Similarly, Faulconer added that the city could lose as much as million in tourism tax. The news comes the day after the famous Hotel del Coronado announced its closure amid the COVID-19 pandemic. RELATED: Hotel del Coronado suspends operations amid coronavirusIn total, Faulconer said current projections put the city at a 9 million dollar loss for the fiscal year, which ends June 30. "We have been saving for a rainy day. This is a hurricane," Faulconer said. The mayor said the federal stimulus package making its way through Washington should offer some help, but urged lawmakers to further help cities financially. RELATED: San Diego COVID-19 Tracker: County reports third deathDuring the news conference, Faulconer also said a San Diego lifeguard tested positive for coronavirus. His condition isn't clear at this time. The announcement was made shortly after county health officials announced a third death due to the virus. 1290
