SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- If you haven't been wearing a face mask while taking an Uber, you may be required to take a selfie to prove you are ready to don one the next time you summon a driver on the world's largest ride-hailing service.The mask verification rules rules announced Tuesday expand upon a similar requirement that Uber imposed on drivers in May to help reassure passengers worried about being exposed to the novel coronavirus.The additional safety measures are part of Uber's efforts to rebuild a service that has saw ridership plunge by 56% in the company's most recent quarter. 597

San Diego (KGTV)- With no warning, a light pole came crashing down on top of a car in Pacific Beach. Neighbors are worried that what they found could shine a light on a bigger problem. “It’s really scary that you can be walking down the street and something could fall out of the sky like that,” says neighbor Kevin Payne. Payne says he was walking in the area on Saturday, along Ingraham Street and Reed Avenue when he heard the loud crash. He says a San Diego lifeguard, who was driving by, stopped to section off the area until crews arrived. The base of the pole is filled with corrosion and rust. Neighbors say to the human eye it would have been tough to spot. “You wouldn’t notice just walking by, you would need to take off the cover of the base,” says Payne. “I think once you took the cover off it would have been clear as day.”In a statement to 10News, the city didn’t pinpoint the cause of the collapse but says the light is scheduled to be replaced this week. In the meantime, city crews will assess the other lights in the area to ensure they are “functional and stable.” The owner of the damaged car was not inside at the time. The city says she will need to make a claim with the Risk Management Department to determine who is liable. 1259

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- President Donald Trump announced in a tweet that he is rolling back on federal fair housing requirements, saying suburbanites will no longer be "bothered" by low-income housing. But some experts say this may not have a significant effect in San Diego County.It all began with the 1968 Fair Housing Act (FHA), a law that came out of the Civil Rights Era, abolishing lending discrimination and redlining neighborhoods according to race and other factors."A lot of communities here in San Diego, you can look at your deeds, and if you look in a pre-war neighborhood here, you are very likely to see that in the past, there was covenant against selling to a person of color," Stephen Russell, Executive Director of the San Diego Housing Federation, said. "That history is not that old."Then came the Obama-Era Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH Rule). This was a supplement to the FHA that required local governments receiving federal funds to create plans to fight continued housing discrimination.But on Wednesday, President Trump tweeted:"I am happy to inform all of the people living their Suburban Lifestyle Dream that you will no longer be bothered or financially hurt by having low income housing built in your neighborhood ... Your housing prices will go up based on the market, and crime will go down. I have rescinded the Obama-Biden AFFH Rule. Enjoy!"While this may seem like a blow to local affordable housing advocates, Russell believes this tweet is more of a political stunt to appeal to Suburbanites outside of California."Housing policies are largely enacted at the local level. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Sixteen people are dead and hundreds are still hospitalized as the City of San Diego continues to battle a Hepatitis A. The majority of them are homeless.Tents belonging to the homeless were back up in downtown just two days after the city sprayed down streets and sidewalks to control the outbreak. David Ross is known as "the waterman" in downtown. He is an advocate for the homeless and regularly passes out water to those living on the street. SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - As protesters gather across the country to spread the message that black lives matter and there is a problem of police brutality against black people, not everyone is ready to join in the marches, but there are other ways to help the combat racism. “To make change, to build a movement, it takes all sorts of action. Everyone doesn’t need to go in the streets,” said Dayo Gore, UCSD Associate Professor in Ethnic Studies and Critical Gender Studies. While many have said they want change both verbally and through social media, she said people of color want that support to be taken to the next level. “This is not enough, your apology is not enough, feeling sorry is not enough, feeling my pain is not enough, I need some actual real change,” she said. To get that real change, people can use their voting powers to elect officials who will be an advocate, which is a point President Obama made in a publication addressing how people can make a difference in combating racism. He also noted that when making demands for officials, be specific with what you’re asking so it’s harder to ignore. Gore emphasized that point, citing specific examples of room for change in the San Diego community. She suggested a community review board that’s independent of the police department to review activity and oversee actions taken by police. She also said funding within the police department could be reevaluated. “Funding other things that will make communities more viable and able to survive, instead of simply policing communities,” said Gore. She also said in order to help get rid of racism, it’s important to first acknowledge there is an issue and educate yourself. “It starts with understanding what the problem is, and then figuring out where you best can raise your voice,” she said. She said another active step to take is speaking up among peers if someone says something racist, even if it’s uncomfortable. “When you’re hanging out with friends, do you say something when people say things racist or make assumptions based off the color of their skin?” she questioned. Gore also suggested people find groups in the community to both follow and support financially.
