Regular nonstop flights between the east coast of Australia and London or New York could soon become a reality.In preparation, Australian airline Qantas has announced three test flights, with 40 people traveling directly from London or New York to Sydney, to see how the human body copes with 19 solid hours of air travel.Qantas previously announced its goal of operating direct flights between London, New York, and three Australian cities -- Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne -- by 2023.The test flights scheduled for October, November and December will move the airline closer to that target and enable Qantas, alongside medical experts, to test the health and wellbeing impacts on passengers and crew.Bjorn Fehrm, an aeronautical and economic analyst at Leeham News, explains to CNN the appeal of the ultra-long-haul flight, as opposed to a more typical two-part journey stopping in Dubai or Singapore.There's no layovers, no extra journeys through customs and no transfer stress, he points out. "You can plan it so you fly over night, and you could arrive to actually have a productive day the next day as well," says Fehrm. "It's going to be businesspeople that fly this way."If the 19-hour flight becomes a reality, it's likely to cost travelers more. "It's cheaper for the airline to do two separate flights," Fehrm says. "But some people are prepared to pay the extra price of that ticket."Before the trials begin later this year, three Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, fresh off the production line, will be flown from Boeing's factory in Seattle to either London or New York.After the test flights -- two from New York, one from London -- the new planes will enter commercial service. Most of the people on board the test flights will be Qantas employees, so seats won't be available for purchase.Researchers from Sydney University's Charles Perkins Centre, Monash University and the Alertness Safety and Productivity Cooperative Research Centre -- a scientific program backed by the Australian government -- will examine the impact of the long flight on those on board.Passengers in the main cabin will wear monitoring devices, and experts from the Charles Perkins Centre will study how their "health, wellbeing and body clock" are impacted by a set of variables that include lighting, food and drink, movement, sleep patterns and inflight entertainment.Monash University scientists will focus on the flight crew, recording their melatonin levels before, during and after the flights, as well as studying brain wave data from electroencephalogram devices worn by the pilots.This information will then be shared with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority "to help inform regulatory requirements associated with ultra-long haul flights," Qantas said in a 2765

Scientists have long warned of the effects of global warming and the possibility of more intense wildfires that burn for longer periods of time. Now, a new team of researchers is hoping to get a better understanding of how the smoke travels and what the tiniest particles could be doing to our lungs. "There's many things we’re still struggling to understand about smoke,” explains Joshua Schwarz, a physicist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The group of researchers includes meteorologists and weather modelers, in addition to scientists. “All together, we are deciding which fires to target," Schwarz says. Amber Soja, with NASA, describes herself as the “fire person” of the group. Every day for the next couple of weeks, this group will create a flight plan, opening the door for another group of scientists inside this flying laboratory. “We've got tremendous range, and we're carrying a tremendous payload of information,” Soja says.This lab was once an Italian passenger airliner. It flies straight into the smoke of fires. "We'll have to look at what's the altitude of the smoke we want to be in, which direction is the smoke going, how far can we track that smoke," Schwarz says.Intake tubes on the outside of the lab bring in smoke particles that will be studied. Researchers are interested in learning how the smoke travels and what it does to our bodies when it’s inhaled. Pete Lahm, with the U.S. Forest Service, says studying the smoke is important because it impacts both public health and safety. “This info will help us make in the long run [make] better decisions on when we ignite fire and how we consider smoke impacts, and that's absolutely critical to our mission,” Lahm says. SAN FRANCISCO — A man suspected of robbing a pharmacy in the San Francisco Bay area was fatally shot by officers who thought a hammer he was carrying in his waistband was a firearm, police said Wednesday.Details of the shooting were revealed even as some California counties and cities began plans to end curfews after days of largely peaceful protests over the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis.Sean Monterrosa, 22, of San Francisco is the first confirmed death at the hands of law enforcement related to smash-and-grabs and protests in California since Floyd’s death. Vallejo Police Chief Shawny Williams said officers were responding to calls of looting at a Walgreens early Tuesday when the shooting occurred.Officers said Monterrosa began running toward a car when he suddenly stopped, got on his knees and placed his hands above his waist, revealing what appeared to be the butt of a firearm in his waistband. “This individual appeared to be running toward the black sedan when suddenly he stopped, taking a kneeling position, and placing his hands above his waist, revealing what appeared to be the butt of a handgun,” Williams said.An officer shot five times through a police car window, striking him once.The object Monterrosa had turned out to be a 15-inch hammer that was tucked into the poclet of his sweatshirt, according to the chief.“The intent was to stop the looting and arrest any perpetrators if necessary.
