SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Hospital beds are filling up quickly with available capacity at zero in Southern California.ICE Nurse Peter Sidhu is overwhelmed. The Los Angeles County RN says their hospitals are on the brink of their limits.“We’re having an influx of patients like I’ve never seen before,” said Sidhu. “We’re running out of space. We’re converting any and every room into a patient room.”He feels more protected after getting the vaccine Thursday but says being short-staffed is a whole other threat. Sidhu also serves as treasurer for the UNAC/UHCP nurses union. He says hospitals have been facing systemic nursing shortages since the early 2000s.“You’ll be lucky to even get a restroom break. You’re on your feet, you’re running, patients are being intubated,” said Sidhu. “We don’t have enough staff. We didn’t have enough staff to take care of our patients before we had COVID.”California groups counties into five regions as part of the new stay-at-home order. On Thursday, the Southern California region available ICU capacity hit zero, even though availability for San Diego County is about 16%. That’s in part because other counties contribute to our region’s total. Inyo County only has two ICU beds open as of Dec. 18. Imperial County has no beds left.“You can open up empty wings, you can convert auditoriums, you can see what some places are doing which is parking structures and tents,” said Sidhu. “But, you can’t replace nurses.”While there are still some ICU beds open in San Diego, they’re filling up quickly. Scripps hospitals tells ABC 10News they’ve requested additional ventilators and respiratory therapists from the county.“We’ve constructed temporary negative pressure rooms, added surge tents at our emergency departments, and expanded COVID care to additional hospital floors,” said Scripps spokesperson Stephen Carpowich.For people who still aren’t being safe, Sidhu as this warning.“I’m looking at the kinds of patients that we have. They’re younger than I thought they would be. They’re healthier. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Homeowners in Chula Vista's Eastlake III Community Association are fighting back against proposed parking updates for the HOA. If passed neighbors would be required to park their cars in the garage before parking in their driveway or on the street.The Board of Directors distributed proposed updates to the Community Association Handbook for a homeowner review and comment; and will vote on Tuesday, August 20.Among the proposed changes:Street parking is permitted only after all garage spaces, and driveway spaces, are utilized to its maximum designed capacityThe Association's management company is permitted to perform a garage inspection of a residence to ensure compliance with the Association's governing documentsHomeowner Jose Esquer believes an inspection would be an invasion of people's property."They seem to want the right to inspect your garage, and that's private property. What I have in my garage shouldn't be anybody's business, but whoever is inside my house. I have a problem with them trying to police what we do once inside our house," said Esquer. Becky Niemiec already parks her car in the garage but still believes the changes would be an overstep. "We don't have attics, we don't have basements, we have no storage, people should be able to use their garage however they want to," said Niemiec.Niemiec says the issue has drawn a lot of debate on Nextdoor. She says while some argue the changes could help beautify the neighborhood, she believes that group is in the minority. Or if you've chosen to support the Chargers, StubHub Center?A newly published analysis by ESPN's Outside the Lines investigated thousands of food-safety inspection reports from health departments that monitor professional sports venues across the U.S.The analysis looks at routine inspection reports from 2016 to 2017.According to ESPN, about 28 percent of the venues registered high-level violation in half or more of their food service outlets. The violations cover temperature, pests or bugs, poor condition of food, equipment failures, employee-related issues, and more.The study's worst is in Charlotte, N.C., where Spectrum Center — home of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets — posted a 92 percent violation rate, followed by Michigan's now-closed Palace of Auburn Hills (86.11 percent), and Texas' American Airlines Center (83.08 percent.)The highest rated stadium was Oakland's Oracle Arena — home of the NBA's Golden State Warriors— with a 1.12 percent violation rate.Petco ParkSan Diego's downtown ballpark ranked fifth among MLB venues and 24th among all venues analyzed by ESPN.Of the park's 168 outlets inspected, 28 recorded high-level violations, according to ESPN's study. The study found the park registered on average 0.09 high-level violations per inspections.Some of those violations, for example, including pest-related issues— two of which occurred in 2016 inspections. On Aug. 18, 2016, an inspector found bird droppings on top of an ice bin and on Sept. 20, 2016, rodent droppings were discovered on the floor and top of a concession stand's ice machine. That ice machine was taken out of service for the rest of the season, according to the study.The San Diego Padres told 10News they are "confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest" in baseball:“We strive for excellence with our food and beverage service at Petco Park. Violations are unacceptable; and, it is our policy to immediately address any issues directly with our concessionaire to ensure they are corrected and do not occur again. We are confident that our ballpark will continue to be one of the safest in all of baseball, as evidenced by ESPN’s published rankings today," the statement read.StubHub CenterThe home of the Los Angeles Chargers came in seventh in the NFL and 22 among all venues in ESPN's study.Of the venue's 39 outlets inspected, 6 recorded high-level violations, the study says, and 0.06 violations per inspection, on average.Some of the violations recorded included employees not properly wearing hair restraints on July 15, 2017, and food not properly protected from contamination on April 29, 2017, the study says.In a statement to 10News from Levy, hospitality partner at StubHub Center, the company noted their violations compare "highly favorably" to the average number of violations at any restaurant:“We welcome the local Los Angeles County health department and employ third-party sanitation experts to ensure a safe environment for our guests. Any time a concern is identified, we immediately correct it and welcome the health department to return to confirm that we are in full compliance. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Each year around this time, we marvel as gray whales make their way from Alaska down to Baja, Mexico, to give birth. However, this year's migration started late. "This year, with the migration being so late, a lot of the moms aren't actually making it to the lagoon before they give birth. So we're seeing a lot of these pregnant females giving birth on the migration this year," said Captain Domenic Biagini, founder of Gone Whale Watching San Diego.While the migration is late, Biagini says the whales look much healthier than last year, when many died. "Likely these whales spent a little longer feeding this year to make up for what they didn't get last year, and with less sea ice than normal, they're able to actually go further north looking for food, which then also makes the migration longer," said Captain Dom. Biagini says the calves aren't strong enough to dive, so he's already seen close calls with private boaters speeding by. "The problem is a lot of these grays, especially the moms with babies, are intentionally trying to keep a low profile and people aren't realizing that they're there as they're flying through thee areas. So it's really crucial to be conscious of your speed and surroundings during gray whale season," said Biagini.He says while the newborns are more vulnerable, the moms do a good job keeping a low-profile.They should arrive at their destination in a week or two. 1433
