SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Custom churros are the latest foodie find on Kearny Mesa's bustling Convoy Street culinary scene.Churreria is taking the classic dessert treat and adding their own twist. The churro stop gives customers the chance to customize their churro with toppings like bacon, coconut, and even fruity pebbles. Better yet, churros are made right before customers' eyes.Nicholas Tran, owner of Churreria, said the idea for a churro shop developed after a trip by the border.RELATED: 10 must-eat restaurants on San Diego's Convoy Street"We saw this kiosk and they were having these churros from this little stand. And I was 'Oh my god. That's a fantastic idea,'" Tran said. "Everyone loves churros!"Tran's wife and his business partner embarked to Spain to develop how they would make their churros. The main difference, Tran, said is the basic ingredients.Traditional North American churros contain egg, milk, and butter. Spanish churros, though, are made from just flour, water, salt, and oil."It's vegan and vegetarian. It's good for people who are lactose intolerant or who have a dairy intolerance or with eggs," Tran. "This happens to be a healthy churro. Customers order whether they want their churro stuffed with Nutella or sweet cream or not, and then they can choose from different glazes and toppings, including sprinkles, nuts, and cookie crumbs."There's nothing to hide. We want to show you we make it from scratch and it's clean," Tran said.Another fun aspect of Churreria is its sustainability arm.Tran worked with his business partner to do something good with their cooking oil after use. The pair settled on donating the used oil to two areas: A local company that repurposes cooking oil into biofuel and a shelter that uses the oil for soap for homeless individuals."We try to put back into the community instead of just dumping the grease ... and having it hauled away," Tran said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Authorities are resuming their search Thursday morning for actress Naya Rivera who disappeared while boating on Lake Piru with her young son.The Ventura County Sheriff's Department tweeted that Rivera may have drowned. Later Thursday, authorities began a recovery effort, saying they believed Rivera had drowned.The 33-year-old actress rented a boat at the lake with her 4-year-old son Wednesday afternoon, authorities told media. Staff at the lake found the overdue rental with her child on board but could not find Rivera.Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Cpt. Eric Buschow told the Los Angeles Times that the boy and Rivera got out of the boat for a swim but she did not follow him back onto the boat. The boy was found sleeping on the boat alone by other boaters in the lake, Buschow said.Buschow said Rivera's son is safe with family members.Rivera, from Santa Clarita, earned stardom after her breakthrough role as cheerleader Santana Lopez on the television musical "Glee." According to her biography, Rivera appeared in commercials for retailer Kmart as a baby then broke into acting at the age of four when she starred as Hillary Winston in the television sitcom "The Royal Family."Rivera recently appeared on YouTube Premium’s “Step Up” series.Tragedy struck the former cast of the hit television show twice over the last decade. Former "Glee" star Cory Monteith, 31, was found dead in a hotel room in Vancouver, British Columbia, in July 2013. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Chief Border Patrol Agent Douglas Harrison apologized Wednesday after a binational garden at the border was bulldozed. Harrison said on Twitter he met with Friends of Friendship Park and apologized for the “unintentional destruction of the garden.”“The original intent was to have the garden trimmed. We take full responsibility, are investigating the event, & look forward to working with FoFP on the path forward,” Harrison continued. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Crews were quick to knock down a fire along a San Diego freeway late Friday.Video showed captured at the scene show a tree engulfed in flames along the westbound side of State Route 94 near northbound Interstate 5 at about 6:30 p.m.It's not clear how the fire began, but crews were quick to douse the flames.10NEWS?UPDATING TRAFFIC CONDITIONSNo injuries have been reported. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are investigating a car fire in Spring Valley that may possibly be linked to a fire that scorched part of a La Mesa hair salon less than half an hour before.At around 3:10 a.m. Monday, firefighters and sheriff’s Bomb/Arson investigators were called to the Slay Lounge on 8739 Broadway in La Mesa in response to a fire in a Dumpster.The fire caused some minor damage to the salon and some other businesses at the strip mall.Investigators discovered an object at the scene that may have sparked the blaze.Less than 30 minutes later, crews were called to an import auto car lot in the 9100 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley in response to a car on fire. One car was completely destroyed, and the flames damaged other nearby vehicles. Investigators are trying to determine if the car fire is somehow related to the Dumpster fire in La Mesa. No injuries were reported in either blaze. 921
