SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The vaccination of a lifetime is just days away for San Diego hospitals. Sharp healthcare administrators are getting ready to distribute thousands of Pfizer vaccines to their front line employees.“They will sign up and be scheduled,” said VP of Sharp Pharmacy Services, Suzanne Shea. “We don’t want people lining up at the door. We want to make sure we’re maintaining social distancing.”Shea says their freezers will store the doses at the necessary -80 degrees Celsius. He’s a physical therapist who works with coronavirus patients who have been hospitalized.“We're right in front of them,” said Montemayor. “Standing them up, face-to-face. The first inclination is to want them to wear a mask so they're not coughing onto you. But, their oxygen saturations are so low that you almost just feel bad for asking them to do so.”He sees the long-term effects of the virus can have on the body. He says some people can’t even get out of bed. Others have lasting symptoms resembling a recent stroke.“I've seen a lot of people that won’t return to normal life,” said Montemayor. “It takes a village to see these folks and the nurses are overwhelmed. It's all hands on deck.”Montemayor says the long-term effects of coronavirus outweigh any potential side effects from getting a vaccine.Sharp Healthcare says even people who have already had COVID-19 should be vaccinated. 1812
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Sheriff's Department is making it easier for residents to receive — at times, indiscernible — messages issued by the department's helicopters.The free service will allow residents to receive a text of the message being issued by deputies by texting "Hello" to 858-866-4356 (HELO). Typically, the department uses its ASTREA helicopter loudspeakers to announce searches for missing persons or suspects, as well as during emergency situations like SWAT standoffs, disasters, shelter in place advisories, or crowd management.But, at times, though messages may be difficult to understand.The service is not automated, meaning users will have to send a text when they want to receive the message being issued in their area. And while the service is free from the department, standard text messaging rates may apply depending on phone plans.The department's text service only applies to SDSO patrol areas and is separate from the San Diego Police Department, which began issuing their helicopter alerts separately on the Nextdoor app and Twitter in 2015."If there is more than one active broadcast at any given time, you have the option to choose the message that impacts your location. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This year's San Diego Pride festivities are going virtual, to comply with the Stay-at-home order brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. While hundreds of thousands of people tuned into the program online, others could not resist heading to Hillcrest for the annual celebration. No cars needed to be towed, and no streets needed to be blocked off Saturday. This year's San Diego Pride parade launched virtually in a quiet outdoor patio at Inside-Out restaurant in Hillcrest."Today's going to look a little different, but we're going to keep it as close to normal as possible," San Diego Pride Executive Director, Fernando Lopez, said.Organizers hoped to keep it "normal," despite trying times brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. But Pride is no stranger to the idea of "adapt and overcome.""Our parade has gone through a hurricane, our parade has gone through a bomb threat," San Diego Pride Philanthropy Director, Sarafina Scapicchio said. "We have had challenges to this event happening, and it is very important to keep our Pride traditions alive regardless of what's going on to the community."People who would normally be marching in Hillcrest submitted videos and logged on for live interviews. Others still made their way to University Avenue, to support local LGBTQ businesses and display their pride."Pride is feeling your true self and celebrating with your community," Lorraine Neville said while dining outdoors at Gossip Grill."It means one love," Cindy Lauritzen said, also at the restaurant.Cindy and Janine Lauritzen never miss a Pride. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- This is the time of year that retailers usually announce how many workers they'll be hiring for the holiday season, but that's been slow to happen in 2020, according to a new report.Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray and Christmas released a list of about 35 major chains and delivery services, with only seven reporting how many they plan to hire. It says big box chains such as Macy's, Target and Kohl's have still not made their plans public. Firm CEO John Challenger said companies normally start announcing hiring plans after Labor Day. "They're deferring those announcements because they just don't know where they stand," he said. Challenger said retail spending is shifting more dramatically online, given the pandemic. He said that will create a new demand for jobs through distributions centers as opposed to retail stores. The report notes that Amazon has been hiring new people throughout the pandemic, which could explain why the online retail giant only plans to add 100,000 jobs this holiday season, down from the 200,000 it added last year. The report says UPS plans to hire 100,000, up for 95,000 last year; while FedEx will add 70,000, up from 55,000 in 20`19. Challenger said he still expects retail hiring to increase over the holidays because this is their biggest time of year. He said, however, that the jobs may be different in store - from temperature takers to curbside delivery people. Challenger said the competition will be quite keen amid double digit employment, with information potentially limited. "You need to be out there right now looking to get these jobs, talking with retailers, letting them know you're interested, because they'll make their hiring and then it will be more, catch as catch can," Challenger said. The uncertainty has also extended to Main Street. Luisa Jackson, a co-owner of Earth's Elements, a gift and beauty boutique with locations in Little Italy and Carlsbad, said normally this time of year is about planning for the holidays.
