BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping Tuesday concluded his two-day official visit to Bangladesh and started his trip to Laos, the second leg of his four-nation tour.In Dhaka on Tuesday, Xi met separately with the country's opposition leader, parliament speaker and president.In talks with Khaleda Zia, chairperson of Bangladesh's main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Xi lauded what Zia has done to promote the Sino-Bangladeshi relationship.He said China appreciates very much Bangladesh's precious support on issues concerning China's core interests like the issues of Taiwan, Tibet and Xinjiang.He said China supports Bangladesh's economic development and will continue to do its best to help the south Asian country.Zia said China is a close and friendly neighbor of Bangladesh. HAIKOU, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Conson landed at Yalong Bay of Sanya City, in south China's island province of Hainan, late Friday, causing casualties.Conson made landfall at 7:50 p.m., packing winds of up to 126 km per hour at the center, according to the disaster prevention office of Sanya, a tourist resort.It brought heavy rains and strong winds to Sanya, uprooting trees, pulling down billboards and light poles and partly cutting power supply.A security guard was buried in debris after a giant billboard toppled at about 7:26 p.m.. The man was found dead at about 11 p.m. after rescuers pulled away the billboard with the help of machines.A motorcycle rider was hit by a falling billboard and died at the site at about 8 p.m..The typhoon is expected to hover in the island for about 9 hours before it enters Beibu Bay on Saturday morning.The city had recalled to port all fishing boats by Friday noon and almost 40,000 people across the island had been relocated by 4:30 p.m..The typhoon, the first to hit China this year, has triggered high waves and cut some village roads.

ULAN BATOR, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- A group of children from China's earthquake-stricken Qinghai province arrived in Mongolia on Tuesday for an eight-day visit.A ceremony was held at the Nairamdal international children's center, 27 km from the capital city of Ulan Bator, to welcome the 59 children and youngsters from Qinghai in western China, which was hit by a major earthquake in April.Prime Minister Batbold Sukhbaatar invited the children from the quake-hit region for a visit in early June when Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Mongolia.Last year, 60 children from China's southwestern Sichuan province, which was also hit by a deadly earthquake in 2008, visited Mongolia at the invitation of then Prime Minister Bayar Sanjaa.

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- In effort to enhance its supervisory role, China's top legislature held an inquiry Thursday into the central government's final accounting for 2009, the first-ever inquiry held into a particular matter.On behalf of the State Council, China's Cabinet, several senior officials from the Ministry of Finance, attended the inquiry to answer questions raised by lawmakers at the 15th session of the Standing Committee of the 11th National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature.The lawmakers focused on issues of general public concern such as how to improve the management of central government's budgeting and accounting, deepen the reform of financial and tax systems, and increase spending on social welfare projects.The decision to order inquiries into government work on certain issues of general public concern, which would require the attendance of senior officials of central government departments, was adopted during the annual NPC session in March.Li Fei, vice chairman of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee, said the inquiry was a concrete and important step for the NPC Standing Committee to exercise and improve supervision of the government.According to the Law on Oversight, which took effect in 2007, senior officials of central government departments, the Supreme People's court and the Supreme People's Procuratorate, if requested, are required to attend legislative meetings to respond to lawmakers' questions over bills or government work reports being reviewed.
