Cigarette use among American adults is at the lowest it's been since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started collecting data on the issue in 1965, according to a report released Thursday."The good news is that cigarette smoking has reached unprecedented lows, which is a tremendous public health win, down to 14 percent from over 40 percent in the mid-1960s," said Brian King, senior author of the report and deputy director for research translation at the CDC's Office on Smoking and Health. About 47.4 million Americans, or 19.3%, used any tobacco product in 2017, the report says.He believes that the decline is due to proven interventions, such as smoke-free policies and rises in the price of tobacco products. As stated in the report, the data is from the National Health Interview Survey, "an annual, nationally representative, in-person survey of the noninstitutionalized U.S. civilian population." The 2017 sample included 26,742 adults and had a response rate of 53%.Researchers assessed the use of five types of tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars, pipes (including water pipes and hookahs), e-cigarettes and smokeless tobacco (such as snuff or dip)."During 2016-2017 declines occurred in current use of any tobacco product; any combustible tobacco product, [two or more] tobacco products; cigarettes; and smokeless tobacco," the report says.King added, "on balance, we still have some public health hurdles in that there is still 47 million Americans that are using some form of tobacco products, and we still have significant disparities among the groups in the country in terms of tobacco product use."So, who is still using these products, and what are they using?Beyond the 14% of Americans smoking cigarettes, 3.8% are smoking cigars, 2.8% are using e-cigarettes or vaping, 2.1% use smokeless tobacco products, and 1% are using pipes.Males (24.8%) were more likely to be smoking than females (14.2%). The highest age group for smoking was among those between 25 to 44 (22.5%); those 65 and older smoked the least (11%). Southerners and Midwesterners (20.8% and 23.5%, respectively) smoked more than those in the Northeast (15.6%) and the West (15.9%)The researchers also looked at race, education level, income level, sexuality, insurance provider and marital status to determine smoking rates.Although cigarettes are the leading cause of tobacco-related deaths and diseases in the country, according to King, he also believes other tobacco products, such as e-cigarettes, need to be considered to continue declining rates of overall tobacco product use."It's critical that we not only modernize our strategies in terms of population but also modernize our interventions to be sure that we are capturing the full diversity of tobacco products that the American public are using," King said. 2850

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV)— The Chula Vista Police department is investigating a home invasion robbery that happened Saturday night on the 1600 block of Claret Cup Drive.80-year-old Don Oder believes he may have had an encounter with one of the suspects. He told 10News he was unloading the bags from his late night shopping trip Saturday and saw a man walk into his garage.“He says 'I’m thirsty. Can I have some water?' So I got him a glass of water,” Oder said. That was around 10:30 p.m. at Oder's home near Camarena Elementary School. At the time, Oder did not know that the person who asked for water could have been a suspect in a home invasion robbery that happened moments prior. “I didn’t put two and two together right away,” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said someone fired a gun at a nearby condo on Claret Cup Drive around the same time. Two people entered and robbed the residents, then ran east. No one was hurt.Looking back now, Oder believes one of suspects may have been the man hiding in his garage.“Pretty obvious that he didn’t want to be seen,” Oder said. Oder describes him as a young, built, clean-cut man.He was surprised at the man’s get-away car.“He said, I’ve called an Uber and it’s going to be here in a few minutes.”Oder stayed with him for a few minutes until the man suddenly ran.Moments later, he and his grandson called police. The next morning, Oder’s son Tim was walking toward the crime scene.Tim Oder said he found a bundle of stuff next to a car along Exploration Falls Drive.“I pulled a hat out, walked a little further, and then I started pulling some gloves, and I thought, oh my God, these are white latex gloves!” Tim Oder said. The water cup and the bundle of items are now with Chula Vista Police, being processed for evidence. The Oders said the fact that one family had two run-ins with an unusual crime in a safe neighborhood is a crazy coincidence.“It seemed so strange, you know?” Oder said. Chula Vista Police said the suspects are still at large and asked the community to be vigilant. 2154

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Extra security officers are in place at Eastlake High School in Chula Vista Friday due to confusion over a school threat at a similarly named school near Tampa, Florida.Pinellas County, Fla. deputies found an unspecific threat written on a wall of a girl’s bathroom at East Lake High School in Tarpon Springs Thursday, according to TampaBay.com. The threat, which was also posted on Snapchat, warned students not to come to school Friday.Word of the Florida threat spread on San Diego County social media pages Thursday night, according to Sweetwater Union High School District spokesperson Manuel Rubio. There is no credible threat to Eastlake High School, Rubio said.As a precaution, the local school added extra security officers on campus Friday.  Families also received an automated phone call Friday morning to reassure them the campus was safe, according to Rubio. The written threat to Florida's East Lake High School has also been deemed not credible, said Pinellas County Sgt. Spencer Gross. 1046

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista loves to come together for a celebration, and nothing unites the community more than another Little League champion.Ten years ago, a team from Park View Little League launched a phenomenon, beating a team from Chinese Taipei to win the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA. Since then, three other teams have represented the South Bay in central Pennsylvania, and each time, the community rallies together for send-offs, viewing parties, and championship parades. Luke Ramirez celebrated his 13th birthday during Park View's magical run in 2009. Now 23, the team's towering star still remembers it like it was yesterday.See complete coverage of Life in Chula Vista"To have that go from just my teammates to the entire community of Chula Vista...that's always going to be special to me," Ramirez told 10News. In 2013, a team from Eastlake followed in Park View's footsteps, advancing all the way to the world championship game. Two years later, the All Stars from Sweetwater Valley reached the U.S. semifinals in Williamsport."It's a good, strong baseball community." Oscar Castro managed Park View to the title in 2009 and has cheered on all the teams that followed, including another trip for Park View in 2017. "It's amazing how close Park View, Eastlake, and Sweetwater Valley all are."RELATED: 20 teams for 20 years: San Diego's bestIs there a secret to the success? Castro credits bringing the kids together at a young age for All Star tournaments and travel ball. Whatever the reason, it adds up to make Chula Vista one of the most successful Little League cities in the entire world. 1650

CINCINNATI – Mary Lee Tracy says she trusted Larry Nassar like she would her father or her brother, but she was fooled by a ”master manipulator.”Tracy said on Thursday she feels she is the right person to fill her new appointment with US Gymnastics and wants to keep the job. But Tracy also said she would resign if what she calls “cyber bullying” toward her doesn’t stop.Speaking at her Fairfield, Ohio gym, the owner and coach of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy strongly condemned Nassar and didn’t deny the positive comments she made about the since-convicted sexual abuser to Scripps affiliate WCPO in Cincinnati in December 2016. Tracy’s two-year-old comment sparked a controversy this week when Aly Raisman, an Olympic champion and Nassar survivor, went on Twitter and protested Tracy’s new national post as Elite Development Coordinator. As much as Tracy said she wanted the job, she also said she has received three “fairly threatening emails” and one that said she “should be in a jail cell next to Larry Nassar.” She has also been vilified on social media to the point that she has already told US Gymnastics she would not keep job if it means hurting her family.“What I feel I need to say is that when I saw Aly putting out some things about something I said two years ago as this was all coming out, that was my truth,” Tracy said about her 2016 comments about Nassar, the former national team doctor now accused of sexually assaulting up to 250 women and girls and serving up to 165 years in prison.“Larry had been treating my athletes for well over 25 years and had served them very well and had helped me and my athletes return to action," she said Thursday.  "He had been someone that we all unfortunately had trusted and depended on, so when I was asked about my experience with him, that’s what I said. So I’m not denying that I said that.“Would I say that anymore? Absolutely not … The man is a monster.  But at that moment, I looked at him like I would my dad or my brother. That was the level of trust I had.“But as we all find out, these people are that good. They are master manipulators. And he didn’t just fool me and all these athletes, he fooled lots of parents, lots of coaches, lots of administrative people."For him to have abused the hundreds of young women that he abused, he was beyond evil, he was beyond manipulative, you can’t even put into words.“I just want people to know that there is no way I would have someone like that working with my athletes if I even had an inkling he was a sexual abuser.”Before Tracy talked to WCPO in December 2016, Nassar’s secret life as a pedophile and sex offender had already started to become public. Two years earlier in 2014, a Michigan State graduate had complained that Nassar, the doctor for the university gymnastics team, sexually assaulted her during a medical exam. But MSU cleared Nassar. In July 2017, Nassar pleaded guilty to three federal charges after investigators said he possessed at least 37,000 graphic videos and images of child pornography, including images of prepubescent children engaged in sex acts.In August 2016, a former Michigan State gymnast filed a criminal complaint that Nassar sexually abused her during treatment for lower back pain.In September 2016, two gymnasts publicly accused Nassar of sexual abuse in an Indianapolis Star report. Michigan State fired Nassar a week later. In November 2016, Nassar was charged in Ingham County, Michigan (home to Michigan State) with three counts of criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13. Prosecutors said they had received about 50 complaints of sexual abuse by Nassar. The next month, Tracy said this about Nassar: 3748
