A local fire department says a 5-year-old boy is a "hero" after he evacuated his 2-year-old sister and the family dog from a fire, and then notified the rest of his family.According to the Bartow County Fire Department in Georgia, 5-year-old Noah Woods woke up on Sunday night to find that his bedroom was on fire. He immediately grabbed his 2-year-old sister, Lilly, and the family dog and escaped the room the old way he could — out the window."I picked (his sister) Lily up, got to the window with Lily, got the dog and got out," Noah told the 559

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Southern California on Thursday, with the earthquake being felt in the Los Angeles area. The earthquake's epicenter was 11 miles from Ridgecrest, California, which is just west of the Mojave Desert. The USGS said the earthquake's epicenter was 90 miles from Bakersfield, California, and 120 miles from Los Angeles. The USGS warned that a number of aftershocks are likely in the region. The USGS added that there is a 5% chance that an even larger earthquake could hit in the coming hours or days. The earthquake was reportedly felt all along the Southern California coast. The earthquake was also reportedly felt in Las Vegas. The Los Angeles Police said that there have been no reports within the city of damage or injuries. Closer to the epicenter, first responders have been dispatched. Kern County, California's fire department said it is working nearly 2 dozens incidents ranging from medical assistance to structure fires in and around the city of Ridgecrest, CA.At a 6.4 magnitude, the earthquake would mark the strongest to strike California since 2010. It would also mark the strongest quake to hit the US since last year's 7.0 magnitude quake that caused damage in and around Anchorage, Alaska. What happens to a pool when an 1289

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has agreed to decide a lawsuit that threatens the Obama-era health care law, but the decision is not likely until after the 2020 election. The court said Monday it would hear an appeal by 20 mainly Democratic states of a lower court ruling that declared part of the statute unconstitutional and cast a cloud over the rest. This will be the third time the Supreme Court has heard a case over the Affordable Care Act, sometimes called Obamacare. In the other two cases, the court upheld the heart of the law. Defenders of the ACA argue that the issues raised by the case are too important to let the litigation drag on for months or years in lower courts and that the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans erred when it struck down the health law's now toothless requirement that Americans have health insurance. The new case stems from tax legislation that was passed in 2017 that left the health insurance mandate in place but eliminated the financial penalty for not buying insurance. Republican-led states then sued, claiming the removal of the mandate was unconstitutional. As the case makes its way through the court system, a major focus of the Democratic presidential race has been on what should be done to provide healthcare to the most people. Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed “Medicare for All,” while former Vice President Joe Biden has suggested adjusting the ACA, adding a public option. 1461

A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. The motive behind the crime is unknown at this time. 1133
