SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some COVID-19 survivors are noticing a surprising symptom months after their battle with the virus: hair loss.Nikki Privett said she had a mild case of COVID-19 back in April, but several months later, she says her hair started falling out in chunks.“I noticed that more and more was coming out in my hands and then eventually in July it became handfuls,” she told our sister station WRTV in Indianapolis. Dr. Nancy Maly, a physician in dermatology at Sharp Rees-Stealy, said she has seen more patients with complaints about hair loss recently, both from those who have recovered from COVID and those who have not been infected."I definitely have seen more patients lately coming in for hair loss -- with and without having had COVID," Maly said. "From what we know about COVID, there's not really a compelling reason to believe that it's the virus itself but more likely it's this stress-induced kind of hair loss that we know about and see all the time."Doctors believe it’s most likely a condition called telogen effluvium, a type of hair loss that can affect both women and men, and typically starts about three months after a stressful event. It can be triggered by emotional stress like a job loss or the death of a loved one, or by physical stress like a serious illness.Typically, adults shed about 100 hairs a day. But Dr. Maly said when your body is in shock or fighting a disease, there can be backlog on that hair loss.“During that stressful time, your body is prioritizing the most important functions and shedding your hair is not one of them,” she said. “So you end up having that delayed reaction where the hairs that were supposed to fall out during that time fall out later.”There is not a direct treatment for telogen effluvium but this temporary form of hair loss usually resolves itself after about three to six months, she said. There’s also early research showing a different kind of link between hair loss and the virus. Two small studies showed that bald men may be up to 40 percent more at risk of developing a severe case of COVID-19. Scientists theorize it’s because bald men have higher levels of a hormone called adrogen that seems to help the virus enter cells. 2216

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Signs posted at the Cowles Mountain trailhead warned San Diego hikers to leave their dogs at home during hot weather. While only three miles long, the trail in Mission Trails Regional Park is steep and often rocky, with no shade. During the cooler months, the trail is popular for dog owners. County experts say dogs with short snouts, like bulldogs, pugs, and Boston terriers, can have difficulty catching their breath in hot weather. The high heat also puts stress on puppies, older dogs, and overweight pets. RELATED: Check your 10News Pinpoint Weather ForecastDogs get dehydrated faster and are more susceptible to heatstroke than humans. “If the temperature inside your house is cooler than outside, keep your dog indoors,” county experts say. Experts recommend :Exercise in the early morning and return before midday.Consider your dog’s fitness level. Match the trail with his endurance in mind.Take more water than you think you’ll need and a water bowl.Take plenty of breaks, preferably in the shade.Check your dog’s paws regularly to make sure they’re not getting burned.Watch for signs of dehydration or heatstroke. They can include excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, weakness or bright red gums, refusal to walk further, collapse, shaking, shock and seizures. If your dog suffers any of these symptoms, stop, preferably in the shade, and offer water. Try to cool your dog off by pouring water over them and then take your pet to the nearest vet.Never leave your dog in the car during summer-like temperatures. On an 85-degree day, a car can reach 102 degrees in 10 minutes and soar upward to 120 degrees –even with the windows down an inch or two. Dogs can suffer brain damage, heatstroke and death.RELATED: San Diego County park rangers recommend these trails in 2019 1810

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State's plans for a Mission Valley stadium cleared one of its last major hurdles. The university's design and financing plans for Aztec Stadium were approved by the California State University Board of Trustees, leaving only the close of sale on the land — and current coronavirus pandemic — left. The board's approval gives SDSU the ability to prepare construction for a 35,000-capacity stadium, eventually leading to a Mission Valley campus.RELATED: City of San Diego, SDSU inch closer to SDCCU Stadium site deal"We are pleased that the trustees continue to share our vision for this project, as the construction of the stadium is a key first step allowing us to unlock the rest of the Mission Valley site plan," SDSU President Adela de la Torre said. "Current events remind us that we need to approach every decision with intention. The board's approval today means that we can move forward in our planning and deliberation, and advance Mission Valley as it makes the strongest sense for our students and for San Diego."SDSU and CSU will continue to monitor the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic and make scheduling and planning adjustments.RELATED: SDSU presents offer to purchase SDCCU Stadium siteAztec Stadium is expected to cost about 0 million, funded through philanthropic gifts and bonds to be paid back through revenue generated by the facility. The facility's revenue will also support its operating costs. The project is part of San Diego State's "SDSU Mission Valley" campus plan, which includes school facilities; housing for students, the community, and affordable housing; retail; and a community river park.SDSU is still working with the City of San Diego to close a sales agreement on the land. 1753
