She says the fear, stress, and unpredictability of this current surge might have consumed her once more if it was not for the lessons learned in the COVID-19 unit during the spring months.“We just know how to treat them better, and we know how to intervene with interventions, so that’s been really helpful,” said Smith.In the spring, hospitals were experimenting with different drugs to treat serious COVID-19 complications. Since then, the FDA has approved Remdesivir as a treatment option for certain patients 12 and older, based on findings that it helped some patients recover faster.Smith says doctors and nurses are now more familiar with the arc of how a patient might respond to symptoms so they can manage bed space and ventilator use better.All this comes as both Moderna and Pfizer announced this week they have both developed vaccines with 95 percent effectiveness.“[Caring for patients] is easier and it’s smoother than it was in the spring,” said Dr. Limes.Not only has patient care gained more clarity, but so too has self-care on the part of first responders, according to Smith.“It was hard,” she said. “I think the biggest part that got to all of us is these people don’t have family to be with. That first surge, it all hit us pretty hard because of the sadness that happened down here. We just kind of lean on each other to get through it.”How far this current wave will go is unknown, but by drawing from the past, these first responders say they will be ready to deal with it no matter what is thrown their way.“We just have a better sense of the trajectory, and that is hugely valuable as we go into this next surge,” said Dr. Limes. 2962

INDIANAPOLIS — A part-time trainer at Lutheran High School in Indianapolis says she was told she is no longer welcome there because she is gay.Krystal Brazel had worked at Lutheran High School as a game-only athletic trainer for the past five years. But in February, Brazel was told she would no longer be allowed to work, coach, or volunteer at the school because of her sexual orientation."I think they really decided to make an example of me," Brazel said. "It breaks my heart. I know what I poured into that school."When Brazel started as the athletic trainer at Lutheran High School she was diagnosing injuries on a folding table in the hallway. She started collecting donations because she said the student-athletes deserved more. Eventually, she helped create an athletic training room."I remember going to school thinking I don't ever want to be a high school athletic trainer. That's why I got my masters," Brazel said. "Life happened. And I started at Lutheran just helping out and I realized this is really God's calling for me is to have an impact on these people's lives and maybe be their first real gay Christian that they had an interaction with."In February, Brazel was called into a meeting with the athletic director and head of school and asked to read a handbook that she said stated homosexuality is a sin. She was then asked to sign saying she could follow it, which she couldn't.Brazel is engaged to be married on July 18 to her fiance, Samantha. She was ultimately told she could no longer coach the softball team she just helped lead to a state title in 2019.In June, Franciscan Health and Lutheran High School could not come to an agreement allowing her to continue as the athletic trainer either. Brazel is now sharing her story, pushing for change for the future."I still love them," Brazel said. AAA says that airfare is down 7 percent from Memorial Day Weekend of 2017 for the top domestic routes. Rental car rates are also 11 percent lower this year. AAA affiliated hotels are also showing upwards of a 14 percent savings from last year. Overall, 41.5 million Americans are expected to travel this Memorial Day Weekend, which is up nearly 5 percent.
