Republican Kim Davis, the Kentucky court clerk who became a conservative Christian heroine for refusing to sign same-sex marriage certificates three years ago, lost her re-election bid Tuesday, according to unofficial results posted by the Kentucky State Board of Elections.Democrat Elwood Caudill Jr. appeared to defeat Davis by more than 650 votes in the race for clerk in Rowan County, according to the unofficial results, with all precincts reporting. "She congratulated me, told me we done a great job, and I thanked her, told each other we loved each other," Caudill told CNN affiliate WKYT, after he said Davis called him to concede.Davis spent several days in jail in September 2015 after refusing to abide by that summer's historic US Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage."It is not a light issue for me. It is a heaven or hell decision," Davis said in a statement at the time, citing her religion.A federal court judge declared Davis in contempt of court for refusing to issue the licenses and not allowing her six deputy clerks to issue them in her place. (AP) — California authorities have returned a pet tortoise to its owner after the wandering animal was spotted in another resident's backyard.The Record Searchlight reported the 41-year-old tortoise named Dino ambled away after a storm blew open the latch on its outdoor enclosure in Red Bluff.An animal regulation officer says the tortoise was found about a half-mile (0.8 kilometers) from the home of owner Cindy Haase.Authorities used watermelon to lure the 150-pound (68-kilogram) tortoise before lifting it into a vehicle for transport.Tehama County sheriff's deputies and the state forestry and fire protection department helped return Dino to Haase.Tortoise Acres Rescue and Sanctuary owner Katie Hoffman says this is breeding season and roaming pet tortoises seeking companionship are "a daily occurrence this time of year." 856

RAMONA (KGTV) - — The owner of Ramona Fitness Center is trying to rally business owners to stand up for their rights and consider defying San Diego County public health orders that require many businesses to close.“They’re forcing us out of business," Peter San Nicolas told ABC 10News in an interview Tuesday. "They’ll force people to not be able to pay for food and pay for home, for somewhere to live. We’re talking about basic necessities and they’re pushing us to the limit.”Gyms are among the sectors ordered to cease all indoor operations after the county moved into the state's purple, or worst, tier. This comes as the county recorded 1,546 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, a single-day record.San Nicolas makes the case that gyms can open safely and that forcing them to close will not stop the spread. “We haven’t had any issue with it here in the gym. We’ve had over 25,000 check-ins just since June and we’ve had no cases of covid here at the gym.”According to the latest outbreak numbers on the county website, only 0.4% of all cases recorded between June 5 and November 14 have been tied to gyms. However, many public health experts say there is no question gyms should be closed during this most recent surge. "Gyms are one of the riskiest possible businesses," said Dr. Rebecca Fielding-Miller, an epidemiologist who teaches at UC San Diego, in an email to ABC 10News. "By definition, people are breathing heavily in an indoor space, which is a recipe for spread. And while I haven’t been inside a gym since March, I would hazard a guess that gyms that are threatening to defy county orders are also not gyms that are enforcing masking policies. They should absolutely be closed."During the last COVID-19 surge in August, Ramona Fitness Centers became one of the first and only businesses cited and then charged by the District Attorney for remaining open in violation of public health orders. (CNS) - The San Diego Humane Society's Project Wildlife Team will release a rescued mountain lion cub to her new home Friday, a little more than a month after she was found on the brink of death.The SDHS team at the organization's new Ramona Wildlife Center will transport the healthy cub to the Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in Scottsdale, Arizona, where she will be able to grow up around other orphaned cubs her age.The cub was originally spotted by firefighters from the Vista Grande Fire Station near a road in Idyllwild on Sept. 2. She was found barely conscious, emaciated, dehydrated, weak and experiencing tremors. She weighed only 10.5 pounds.RELATED: Project Wildlife nurses dying mountain lion cub back to healthAfter two months of intensive care from the Project Wildlife's Ramona team, including daily fluid therapy, medications, and carefully monitored transitions to solid food, the cub has nearly doubled in weight to 22 pounds, and is now thriving and healthy. According to the Mountain Lion Foundation, adult female mountain lions can weigh anywhere from 80 to 130 pounds.The cub is the first wildlife patient admitted at the Ramona campus since San Diego Humane Society's Project Wildlife took over the Wildlife Center from the Humane Society of the United States on Sept. 1.As of April of this year, mountain lions gained temporary endangered species status from the state Fish and Game Commission. The state estimates around 500 mountain lions still call Southern California and the Central Coast home.According to the humane society, mountain lions typically stay with their mother until they disperse to live a solitary life at around 12-18 months of age. The age of the cub in Ramona was not immediately available. SDHS also said it was unsafe to return a young mountain lion to the wild if found injured or orphaned as a kitten.Project Wildlife worked with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to monitor her progress and when stabilized, to ensure she had a good permanent home at a qualified facility. 2071
