SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Youth sports leaders are holding a protest in front of the San Diego County Administration Building on Saturday to voice their concerns over the state’s regulations regarding games and competitions.Currently, under California's coronavirus restrictions, youth sports can practice, as long as six feet of social distancing can be maintained. Bob Turner is both Executive Director of Presidio Soccer League and President of the Southern California Youth Soccer Association and said the athletes should be able to play games.He said they have created safety plans, including spacing out the times of games and shortening games to avoid crowds, only allowing one parent for each athlete, and also requiring masks of all referees, parents, and substitute players. Turner said they’ve sent countless letters and filled out petitions to the state, but have not gotten a response. RELATED: County sends plan to resume youth sport practices to Gov. NewsomA spokesperson for San Diego County said the county has also been asked about plans for youth sports. They also asked the state and have not heard about what’s next.“This is small potatoes to them compared to a lot of the other things opening but it is our youth and what’s more important than our kids. We’re destroying these kids with what’s happening through the schools and now we’re taking this away. This is the only outlet some of these kids have,” said Turner.Turner added that he’s heard of some athletes traveling to other states that have more relaxed restrictions so they can play in games and tournaments.Turner said counties in California are planning to all hold protests to voice their concerns. He said any athlete is welcome at their protest Saturday, and hopes the unified voices will be heard by the state.“We need to bring awareness. We feel like nobody’s listening so we just have to get people to listen and do the right thing,” said Turner.The protest will be held at 10 a.m. 1972

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Whitney Climenson noticed something at her recent shift at a Carslabd restaurant. It wasn’t nearly as crowded, and there were only three people on the clock - about half the normal level. She's instead spending most of her time trying to get through to the Employment Development Department, and figure out why weeks of her jobless benefits are still unpaid. “I would wait for hours on hold if it meant talking to somebody, but they just say ‘Oh, we can't take your call at this time,” Climenson said. Climenson's one of more than 200,000 San Diego County workers who lost their jobs in March and April amid the coronavirus pandemic - a number that many economists expected to grow in May. “Here in San Diego a bigger portion of our economy is in food and drinking establishment employment, and so what we would see then is a big rebound in that area as well locally,” said Alan Gin, economist at the University of San Diego. The hiring - already picking up locally. Andrew Feghali just opened Dave’s Hot Chicken in Pacific Beach. He’s hosting a job fair Monday with at least 10 openings. “We start above minimum wage, so we want to make sure we get the best and the brightest, and another perk is that you get free food,” Feghali said. But like many restaurants, Dave’s is not opening for in-house dining - that means while hiring is picking up, many restaurant jobs won't come back for a while - if at all. 1435

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local Marine's dreams are close to becoming a reality in the form of a massive property in Dulzura. It is not just for Kalani Creutzberg. His efforts to help others prompted an Animal Planet star to join the cause. Nate Schoemer was also a Marine. He was fresh out of high school with his blood type on his boots when he joined the invasion of Iraq.  "The first group was out there for three days and when they came back you could tell that they've just been through hell," Schoemer said. "This is hard for me to talk about," he said with tears in his eyes. It is especially hard to him to discuss it with civilians who often cannot comprehend the horrors of war. He lost some friends on that deployment in 2003."I could hear it from where I was," he started. "I mean I could hear them screaming," It haunted his heart on home soil., but he said his dog's love lifted his spirits. "I need to continue on this mission and helping others the way she helped me," he added.When he got out of the service he became a master dog trainer. He went on to host an Animal Planet show called "Rescue Dog to Super Dog". In it, he saved shelter dogs and turned them into service dogs for people in need. In episode one, he trained Bas for Creutzberg, which is how the two met. Creutzberg survived chilling deployments, but the fight for his life followed him home. "Before I knew it I was homeless," Creutzberg explained. "It was embarrassing, it was shameful," Bas gave him a sense of purpose. "When I was going there to rescue him he was actually the one rescuing me," Creutzberg added. Now, he is on a mission to give homeless vets a home. He plans to buy a property that is nearly 300 acres in Dulzura. "We're going to run our day to day operations very much like when we were back in the service," he explained. "There will be structure, we will work together…… the very things that a lot of us miss."It does not end there.  They will also rescue homeless dogs  about to be euthanized."[We'll] allow both the veterans and the dogs to grow relationships and start anew," he said. Schoemer believed in the Cammies and Canines Sanctuary so much, he joined the efforts. He plans to turn some of the dogs on death row into service dogs for vets. "Just being around Marines and veterans is a great thing,"  Schoemer said with a big grin. Their goal is to get back to tackling battles together. If that is not enough, man's best friend might just save someone else from being their own worst enemy. Creutzberg said they have raise about 0,000 of the 0,000 they need to purchase the property, so they are looking for investors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With some local school districts starting distance learning in about two weeks, some parents have been dealing with the emotions that these changes bring.ABC 10News has been following several local families as they navigate the ups and downs of this unusual year.Patrick Batten has accepted that the school year will start virtually. “It’s kind of bittersweet. We understand where we are in the situation, so we’re accepting that, but it it’s still upsetting we can’t send our kids back to school yet,” Batten said.Three of his four children are in the Poway Unified School District. At this point, the district plans to be virtual through December. Knowing that, the Battens are still looking into options on how to make it work with both Patrick and his wife working full-time.“Even though we’re in the same house, that almost makes it worse. We understand our children need help, but can’t provide it to them,” Batten said, when talking about working at home while the children conduct classes at home. “You feel a sense of helplessness... we have to have somebody that can come in and help us.”Whatever they decide will be a financial strain, costing their family at least several hundred dollars a month.Tancy Campbell’s two kids are in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. When ABC 10News spoke to her in July, she agreed with distance learning. Now, she is more conflicted.“As long as they’re social distanced and properly monitored, maybe it would be okay. While I’m okay with them starting at home currently, I do want the push to get them back into school and on a schedule sooner than later,” Campbell said.Campbell said there was more computer time than she anticipated for her nine-year-old. She thought there would be more independent assignments.For her 5-year-old son with autism, she is not sure how beneficial distance learning will be for him. He is on an IEP, or Individualized Education Program.“He has to have so many minutes of speech and occupational therapy from the school district, so I’m not sure how they’re going to work that in,” Campbell said. She said because of COVID-19, she has noticed her does not want to leave the house and has trouble dressing in regular clothes.Sweetwater Union High School District started earlier this month. ABC 10News interviewed Gina Chavez, a mother of three, who said the first day was “crazy.”It is unclear when any of the local districts will be returning to in-person instruction. 2483
