At a quick glance through her office, you might think Laura Packard was working on the campaign trail. But this small business owner is fighting to keep her own title: cancer survivor.“A little over three years ago, I walked into a doctor's office with a nagging cough and walked out with a stage four cancer diagnosis. Everything changed for me all at once,” said Packard.She underwent chemotherapy and radiation over a six-month period. “I lost all my hair. Some days, I wouldn't be able to get out of bed, and there was a lot of pain,” she recalled.After multiple surgeries and hospitalizations, she said her bills were really piling up. “I think it was near a million dollars,” said Packard of her medical bills.She says, thankfully, her insurance through the Affordable Care Act saved her in more ways than one.“I've been self-employed off and on for over a decade, and I used to have junk insurance, and if I still had that insurance today, I would be bankrupt or dead,” said Packard.However, she’s worried this level of insurance coverage won’t last with the recent Supreme Court confirmation and once the election results become final.“The day after my first chemotherapy was when Republicans in the House voted to dismantle the Affordable Care Act, which was keeping me alive,” she said.As talks of repealing the ACA gained ground, she moved hundreds of miles away from family to live in Colorado.“Colorado has pretty good state-level protections, but nobody should have to live like this. Nobody should have to be a health care refugee in their own country just to get care, and state-level protections can only go so far. What you need is a federal law to protect everybody.”She, like so many Americans, is wondering how she will pay for her coverage if her costs go up. Packard is fearful her health will suffer if she can’t afford her premiums.“My life is in the balance, but millions of Americans are in the balance, too.”She is worried those with pre-existing conditions won’t be able to get the care they need at a price they can afford.She is also concerned the individual mandate for health insurance will be taken away. With fewer healthy people paying into the healthcare system, the system cannot help cover costs for people who are sick.“My fear is that the rest of the affordable care act will tumble because we won’t be able to sustain it in its totality,” said Michele Lueck, president of Colorado Health Institute.Packard is just one of millions being helped by the subsidies the Affordable Care Act is founded on, and while she knows the Affordable Care Act could be improved, she hopes it will be the building block for even better care, instead of waiting years for a new solution.“I don't even know how many people will die if they succeed in destroying the Affordable Care Act, because people will lose their insurance and people will die,” said Packard.The struggle is something all Americans have endured this year. This cancer survivor is just hoping this election will bring a confirmation that her health is valued.“In a pandemic, it's more clear than ever that we're all in this together and we need candidates and elected officials that work for the greater good,” said Packard. 3224

As the polar ice caps retreat, polar bears could struggle to survive by the end of this century, a number of university researchers wrote in a study published in the Nature Climate Change journal.The study looked at a number of sub-species of polar bears who live in the arctic and how they have adapted to reduced sea ice from 1979 to 2016. The group of researchers said that all but a few sub-species of polar bears will be able to reproduce and survive given projected conditions by 2100.Polar bears use sea ice to capture seals for food. When sea ice erodes for the summer, polar bears fast. Although polar bears are capable of fasting for months, there are limits to how long the bears can go without food.The researchers examined energy needs of polar bears, and that the amount of time polar bears would fast would lengthen to a point that makes it too challenging to survive and reproduce.While resting female polar bears can generally fast for longer periods of time, reproducing females, males and cubs all require shorter fasting periods, the research found.“Avoiding continued sea-ice decline requires aggressively mitigating greenhouse gas rise,” the researchers wrote, “and our results explicitly describe the costs to polar bears of avoiding that mitigation.”To illustrate how much sea ice is being lost, NOAA is projecting that the arctic could have ice-free summers by 2042.Scientists have long discussed the possibility that polar bears could become nearly extinct by the end of the century. Beyond reducing carbon emissions, proposals have included relocating cubs to areas of the Arctic expected to retain higher levels of sea ice have been proposed. As the holiday shopping season kicks off this week, the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers about a new scam surrounding pricey gaming consoles.According to a news release, with the PlayStation 5 and other gaming devices in high demand, fake deals are appearing on the internet showing the systems at a reduced price.The scam reportedly works by showing a deal on a lesser-known website that has positive reviews, convincing customers to make a purchase via Paypal or another form of payment.According to the BBB, if you receive a package at all from the website or company, it won't be that coveted PS5 or Xbox Series X, but instead will be an item of little value."Since you technically received a shipment, you will be unable to contest the purchase with the third-party who processed the payment," the BBB said.One consumer who fell for a scam said they were unable to get in touch with the website they purchased their item from.“I attempted to reach out to the email address on their website, however I received an email informing me that it was not a valid email address. I then attempted to call the phone number listed on the website, [which gave me] an automatic message informing me that the number was not valid.”The BBB says to do these three things before buying a pricey console:Research the company you plan to purchase from thoroughly. It’s best to purchase items from sellers you already know and trust, but if you decide to purchase from an unfamiliar online store, do your homework first. Read as many customer reviews as you can find, look up the business on org, and do an online search with the company’s name followed by the word “scam” to see if you find any complaints. Make sure the company has legitimate customer service contact information (not just a form you have to fill out and hope for a response) and clear return and refund policies as well.Avoid impulse buying. Scammers like to draw people in with “flash sales” and “limited time offers” in hopes you will hand over your money on impulse. Resist the urge.Don’t believe prices that are too good to be true. Before you start shopping, find out the price of the gaming console at a major retailer. You can check prices online to get a general idea of what the console is selling for. Keep that price in mind as you shop and be wary of sellers who offer the product at a steeply discounted price.
