SUZHOU, Jiangsu, June 12 (Xinhua) -- Scholars and officials stressed the importance of protecting cultural heritage at the World Expo's second theme forum which opened in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province on Saturday.Culture remains the soul of a city and urban residents not only need to ensure that traffic moves smoothly, infrastructure projects are completed and their economic futures are secure, but they must also protect their cities' diversified cultures, noted Minister of Culture Cai Wu.The country's urbanization has improved people's lives, but also resulted in problems such as a disappearing cultural heritage and the sometimes monotonous appearance of cities, Cai said."If it goes on like that, it will certainly impede the growth of a city or a country and reduce the quality of people's lives," Cai warned.Further, globalization was causing more pressure to protect the nation's cultural heritage, said Sha Zukang, head of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs.Cultural heritage protection should focus on providing a diversified culture rather than a monotonous culture, Sha said.With the theme focusing on cultural heritage and urban regeneration, the two-day forum was co-organized by the Ministry of Culture, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the Executive Committee of Expo 2010 Shanghai China, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the government of Suzhou.The forum has attracted nearly 800 participants from some 20 countries and regions, as well as international organizations.Participants to the forum include Deputy Director-General of UNESCO Hans d' Orville and the French architect and designer of China's National Center for the Performing Arts, Paul Andreu.A total of 189 countries have sponsored pavilions at the six-month Shanghai World Expo, whose theme is "Better City, Better Life".

BEIJING, Aug. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- Rising domestic iron ore production and slowing steel demand have hit some foreign miners and affected the global market, industry leaders said on Tuesday.China's iron ore imports dropped for the third straight month to 47.2 million tons in June, while spot prices have dropped to about 2 per ton after peaking at 5 per ton in April.The country's iron ore imports rose 4 percent year-on-year in the first half of this year, figures from the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) showed. But domestic ore output increased by 28 percent year-on-year to 485 million tons in the same period, with output rising 37.6 percent in the second quarter from the first quarter."Rising domestic ore production is the main factor that drove down imports, largely impacting supply and demand on the global market," CISA vice-chairman Luo Bingsheng said.The figures form part of the bad news for international mining companies in Australia and Brazil that provide more than half of the ores to China.Iron ore imports from Australia, Brazil and India accounted for 62.3 percent of the country's total ore consumption last year.Brazilian company Vale already predicted in June that the share of imported ores in China would drop this year.About 40 percent of Chinese steel mills have to make cutbacks or put plants on maintenance, blaming increasing costs of imported ores and declining steel prices. Oversupply in the industry will continue to lower production, further driving down ore imports in the third quarter, Luo said.The CISA will also reduce the number of licensed iron ore importers to regulate the imported ore market."We will announce new rules for the industry soon, which include higher standards on the environment, energy consumption and capital requirement," Luo said.

TAIPEI, June 16 (Xinhua) -- China's eastern Zhejiang Province and Taiwan have agreed to deepen cooperation in agriculture, tourism, finance and other sectors, according to sources with a Zhejiang delegation which concluded its eight-day visit to the island on Wednesday.The sources said that the delegation, led by Zhejiang governor Lu Zushan, purchased 31 million yuan (4.5 million U.S. dollars) worth fruits and tea products from local farmers in Kaohsiung and Nantou.Zhejiang provincial government also pledged to help Taiwan farmers to sell their agricultural products in Hangzhou, Ningbo, Yiwu and other cities in the province and offer them preferential treatment in participating farm produce exhibitions.Zhejiang Province plans to increase its imports from Taiwan to about 10 billion U.S. dollars by the end of this year, from last year's 7.7 billion U.S. dollars.After the first six Zhejiang companies which have been permitted to conduct investment in Taiwan, Zhejiang government will promote more companies to invest in the island.Commercial banks in Zhejiang and Taiwan have also achieved cooperation agreement on financial service, insurance, futures trading and other services for small and medium-sized companies on both sides.Zhejiang is where many Taiwan people come from.The province is also a magnet for Taiwanese investment. ZHAOYUAN, Shandong, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Fourteen miners were confirmed dead, 23 others still trapped underground while 292 were lift to the ground safely following a fire that engulfed a gold mine in east China's Shandong Province Friday, local authorities said early Saturday morning.A total of 329 miners were working underground when the fire broke out at about 5 p.m. at the Luoshan Gold Mine run by Lingnan Mining Co. Ltd. in Zhaoyuan city, a spokesman with the rescue headquarters told Xinhua.Three hundred and six were lifted to the ground as of 5 a.m., but 14 of them were found dead, he said.Twenty-three people were still trapped underground, with 21 miners' locations identified, he added.Dozens of injured miners had been sent to two local hospitals, he said.An initial investigation showed that the fire was likely caused by an underground cable. Police were further investigating the incident.The mine owner had been taken into police custody, he said.Over 100 rescuers are working at the scene. Provincial Party chief Jiang Yikang and governor Jiang Daming have rushed to the scene to oversee the rescue work.
