CINCINNATI -- Lockland (Ohio) firefighter Michael Allen said he could feel his heart beating in his chest when he heard a 10-month-old was trapped in an apartment fire.A mother had been cooking at her apartment on Sunday when a fire started in the kitchen. She was able to get three of her children outside, but the smoke was too thick for her to get to her baby. A police officer tried to rescue the child, but he too was swallowed in smoke.Allen was on his way to the fire when he learned the child was trapped on the second floor.“There was no thinking twice, there was no second guessing in what had to be done.  You just – you know everything comes to you, things (you've) probably not thought about in five years … everything comes back, and you jump in the action and you go,” Allen said.He said he could see the fire growing from the kitchen when he opened the door. He heard the baby crying as he put his oxygen mask on and made his way through the smoke to the second floor.“The baby stopped crying, so then immediately you’re thinking the worst is about to happen,” Allen said. “I made it into her bedroom. I found the crib relatively quick, was able to pick her up and when I did she did start to cry again, so I took my mask off, covered her face up and brought her outside to mom.”Allen has been a firefighter for more than 10 years. He said nothing tops the joy he felt when he handed the baby to her mother.“It’s an incredible feeling. It’s exactly why we do this job,” Allen said. “It doesn’t matter who you are. You become a fireman to help people and make their day better than what it was before you got there.”First responders gave the baby oxygen and transported her to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center for observation, but she is expected to be OK.Allen said he knows things could have been much worse.“Had we been on a call, you gotta have units respond from other departments if you’re out, so knowing that everything just fell in place perfectly today and that little baby is going to make it … it’s a good feeling,” he said. 2097

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Free coronavirus testing will soon be available to students and staff in the Chula Vista Elementary School District. This week, the board voted to approve a plan to make that happen.Testing would move the state’s largest elementary school district closer to in-person learning. The district is partnering with bioscience company, Kahala, to provide the free tests.Testing would be voluntary for students, teachers and staff. Participants would be tested every two weeks for the virus and once for antibodies.RELATED: Poway Unified School District approves campus return plan for some studentsOn-site testing would be available at five schools to start and would later expand to more locations. Kahala will bill the participant’s insurance to cover the cost.The district says the idea is to determine the level of active cases so they can mitigate the spread.The plan is already drawing some criticism from teachers. Susan Skala with the Chula Vista Educators Union is worried about working with Kahala since the company formed early this year.“We simply don’t know enough about it because this program has been what we feel has been rushed through,” said Skala. “We’re not sure about how our medical data would be secure, we’re not sure about the confidentially and integrity of the program.”Dr. Michael Miyamoto is the Chief Medical Officer of Kahala. He says their staff is composed of practicing physicians. They have current partnerships with private companies and health care facilities for employee testing.Miyamoto says their tests are authorized by the FDA for emergency use.“Many, if not most of the diagnostic tests and treatments for COVID-19 are authorized under an Emergency Use Authorization,” said Miyamoto. “This was done because a lot of the regulatory review of these needed to be done very quickly in order to get these test and therapeutics out for use by healthcare practitioners.”He says the more people that volunteer, the better.“If we have a reasonable sampling the information will be very helpful in making decisions but also as a model for other school systems around the country,” he said.The Chula Vista Elementary District says they haven’t decided which schools to use as testing sites yet, but they will be available to anyone in the district.“Our learning community from any of our systems can access any of those five to six sites for that testing,” said Anthony Millican with CVESD.The district is also partnering with the County Health and Human Services Agency as well as the City of Chula Vista. Those programs have free testing options for families without health insurance.The district does not have a scheduled date for returning to in-person learning. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three gang members charged in a violent crime spree that stretched from San Ysidro to La Jolla were in court Tuesday in Chula Vista for their preliminary exam. Michael Pedraza, Cesar Alvarado, and Britney Canal are accused of murdering a South Bay businessman last April and kidnapping and shooting a woman who witnessed it. Mya Hendrix was the first took take the stand. She's paralyzed and confined to a wheel chair after being shot three times and left to die at Sunset Cliffs. The judge would not allow the media to show the faces of the defendants in court, but they smirked during much of testimony. Hendrix, 19, said she was friends with the defendants and had done drugs with some of them. She says they turned on her because they thought she stole a backpack with ,500 in it. Hendrix says they kidnapped her, tortured her with a game of Russian Roulette and tased her multiple times. At one point, she testified she was forced to call her mom for ransom money. “I told her I needed ,500. My life depended on it and she was asking me why, and I was forced to say that I had robbed somebody. I wasn’t allowed to say that people had thought I took something from them, they forced me and tased me told me to say that I robbed them," said Hendrix. Prosecutors said the trio drove Hendrix to various locations. "They were telling me they were going to put me into sex trafficking. They were telling me they were selling me to this guy they had at the park. They had me like tied up in this garage with duct tape over my mouth and they were tasing me in front of people," said Hendrix. Prosecutors say Hendrix was in the backseat when the defendants shot and killed a South Bay businessman. According to investigators, the suspects thought 59-year-old Mario Serhan was an undercover cop who was following them. The defendants are charged with fatally shooting him in the head. Witnesses found Serhan slumped over the steering wheel of his car with a gunshot wound to the head. The vehicle was coasting through the intersection of Industrial Blvd. and L Street before it collided with a storage business, police said. Hendrix testified that the trio celebrated the killing. "Ms. Canal was excited. She was like, "good shot babe" cause he was like, "I got him in the dome," testified Hendrix. She said the defendants cleaned the car with bleach to remove any gun powder residue. Shortly after, she says they took her to Sunset Cliffs and tried to murder her. "I walked down the stairs with the gun pointed at me the whole time, pleading for my life, crying he told me to take it with some dignity and not to die like a little *&^%$ and that’s when he shot me the first time, which the bullet hit my ear and I stayed standing. The second time is the one that went in my neck and out of my chest on this side that’s the one where I fell and broke my spinal cord and then as he was walking away he turned around and shot me a third time in the hip. All I could do was lay there and pray," testified Hendrix. She was found hours later near the surf by tourists at Sunset Cliffs. A fourth defendant, Francisco Aranda, is also charged in the case. He's accused of setting Hendrix up. Hendrix says she thought they were friends, but Aranda believed she had stolen from him. Testimony continues Wednesday morning. A judge will decide if there is enough evidence for this case to go to trial. 3431

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A transient pleaded guilty to an arson count Monday for setting a fire in Chula Vista, one of several blazes he was arrested on suspicion of sparking.Alejandro Gonzalez, 33, is slated to be sentenced Jan. 13 to a 32-month prison term.He was initially charged with four felony counts of arson of a structure or forest involving blazes on May 24, June 14, Sept. 17 and Sept. 20, but those counts were dismissed Monday morning as part of his plea to a newly filed arson of property count.The new count is not connected with a specific fire, but Deputy District Attorney Roza Egiazarian said all the blazes he was charged with setting will be considered at his sentencing hearing.RELATED: Man tied to series of fires in Chula Vista river bottom arrestedAccording to Chula Vista police, who said about a dozen blazes were sparked at various locations throughout the city since late April, Gonzalez was arrested near the scene of a Sept. 20 brush fire.Officers spotted him "walking quickly away" from the blaze in the 1700 block of Fourth Avenue, according to police, who said he had several lighters in his possession and during questioning, "admitted to intentionally setting several brush fires in the river-bottom area over the past five months. Gonzalez claimed he was setting the fires due to hearing voices."Chula Vista police said the fires were largely in the river bottom area that Gonzalez was "known to frequent" and mostly charred vegetation. (KGTV) - A brush fire erupted near homes in the Eastlake area of Chula Vista Tuesday, but no evacuations were ordered as crews doused the flames.The fire was reported shortly after 9 a.m. near the 400 block of Agua Vista Drive, according to Cal Fire officials.The blaze briefly burned vegetation several yards from some homes, but crews in the air and on the ground were able to stop the fire’s spread before it reached structures.After nearly two hours, crews contained the fire to 44 acres burned.10News learned the fire may have been accidentally caused by landscapers using equipment to clear out weeds. 635
