It now has 12 working reactors with 10.15 gigawatt of total generating capacity.China has set an official target of 40 gigawatts (GW) of installed nuclear generating capacity by 2020, but the government indicated it could double the goal to about 80 GW as faster expansion was one of the more feasible solutions for achieving emissions reduction goals.As such, China will need to source more than 60 percent of the uranium needed for its nuclear power plants from overseas by 2020, even if the country moves forward with a modest nuclear expansion plan, Chinese researchers say.

SINGAPORE, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- In celebration of the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and China, a dedicated marker to commemorate late Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping was unveiled here on Sunday.The marker, which sits beside the Singapore River, was unveiled by Singapore Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping, who is here on a three-day official visit.The marker comprises a text panel and a bronze bust of Deng commissioned by the Chinese Embassy to Singapore. BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.

BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang and U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu Tuesday called for stronger energy cooperation between the two countries.At a meeting in Beijing, Li said China and the United States had broad agreement and a common interest in maintaining energy security and promoting the development of clean energy.He said the fast growth of China's new energy industry provided great opportunities for foreign companies.Li hoped the two sides would strengthen communication and exchanges, deepen pragmatic cooperation in energy, and expand their clean energy cooperation.Chu said the United States attached importance to energy cooperation with China and would endeavor to promote bilateral programs.He called for joint efforts from the two sides in construction of a clean energy research center, and hoped they would promote joint research and development, and technology innovation.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- The United States and China must seize the "great opportunity" of cooperation to solve the common challenges facing the world today, said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke on Thursday."We can be certain that it will be a better future if the Chinese and American governments pursue cooperation over confrontation in the economic sphere," Locke said at a luncheon hosted by the U.S.-China Business Council in Washington.
