PINE VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) - A man suspected of smuggling drugs along Interstate 8 with his teenage son in the car was arrested Friday by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Pine Valley. The 62-year-old unidentified man drove a Honda Accord through the I-8 immigration checkpoint and triggered a Border Patrol canine response, agents said. A secondary inspection turned up anomalies with the car’s battery.Agents said they found four vaccuum-sealed bags that tested positive for characteristics of cocaine. The packages weighed 10 pounds and had a street value of more than 0,000, according to the Border Patrol. The man, a U.S. citizen, was taken into the custody of the Drug Enforcement Administration. People of color and allies are participating in Blackout Day on Tuesday to support the African American community and Black-owned businesses.Blackout Day is an economic protest organized by The Blackout Coalition. Participants are asked not to spend any money on July 7, but if they must spend, they’re asked to do so only at Black-owned businesses.The coalition says the movement is exclusively targeted at empowering and uplifting Black people, but it welcomes all people of color to stand in solidarity with them. The organization says it also welcomes allies who choose to participate in the protest, but leaders say they “make absolutely no apology for the fact this movement is FOR US & BY US.”The goal of the protest is to highlight the buying power of African Americans. In 2018, Black buying power reached .3 trillion, up from 0 billion in 1990, according to Nielsen.“This is only the beginning of a lifelong pursuit of economic empowerment as a reality for ALL BLACK PEOPLE,” the organization wrote on its “about” page. “United, we are an unstoppable force. Police in Hampton, Virginia are investigating after 119 MacBook Air laptops were reported stolen from an elementary school.Officers were called to Phenix Elementary School on August 17.Police say two unidentified suspects broke into the school through a window shortly after 3 a.m. and made off with the computers.23-year-old Averi Wilkins of Hampton was charged with one count of possession of stolen property in connection to the case.Wilkins tells News 3 he buys and sells used electronics all the time and didn’t know the laptops had been stolen. He’s scheduled to be in court Tuesday.Hampton Schools says the stolen laptops have not been recovered. 661
