SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — If you’re thinking about trading in your used car, now might be the time.Used car prices are beginning to cool off but remain near the historic highs caused by the pandemic, according to data from Edmunds.After a peak in September, dealers paid 3.3% less on average for trade-ins in October. The average used vehicle transaction price, however, remained flat at a record-high ,418 in October because of an influx of relatively new off-lease vehicles."If your household has a second vehicle that you are thinking about selling because it's going unused during the pandemic, there's no point in holding onto it in the hopes of its value increasing again,” said Ivan Drury, Edmunds' senior manager of insights. “You won't get a dramatically higher value for your trade-in than you would have just last month, but you should still get a bit more money than usual since values are still inflated."Used vehicles are worth 16.9% than they did last year, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index.What caused the historic spikeIn some ways, the pandemic was a time machine for used car prices, reversing depreciation and making pre-owned vehicles worth more than they did a year ago.“That’s kind of crazy to see appreciation on a used vehicle,” Drury said.Drury said he sold a car after owning it for a year for the same price. “That’s unheard of.”Industry experts say it’s a matter of supply and demand. During the pandemic, the supply of used cars dropped, while the demand soared. Both caused prices to spike to record levels.On the supply side, the shutdown of new car manufacturing had a cascading effect on the used car market.“We weren’t churning out new cars, which meant there wasn’t much for shoppers to buy. Therefore people weren’t trading in their used cars,” said Michelle Krebs, Autotrader’s executive analyst. “Everything just kind of stopped.”On top of fewer trade-ins, the pandemic brought the car rental industry to a standstill. Normally, companies like Hertz and Enterprise refresh their fleets, selling off about two million used cars a year. Car rental companies kept their fleets parked during the early months of the pandemic.The third reason supply plummeted: a lot of people decided to put off car buying and extended their leases, so those vehicles weren’t available for sale, although that is now beginning to change.At the same time the supply of used cars dropped, demand for used vehicles surged.“The factories were shut down. They weren’t producing. A lot of consumers, even if they wanted to buy new, they suddenly had to look at used,” Drury said. “That jacked up demand. We had consumers fighting for the same units of inventory.”Demand also rose because people in metro areas that typically relied on public transportation decided to get cars for the first time. And in an environment with a lot of financial uncertainty, used cars were a more affordable option, Krebs said.Low interest rates and stimulus checks also fueled demand by giving consumers more buying power, according to Krebs and Drury.With car rental businesses picking back up and lease extensions beginning to end, the supply of used cars has begun to stabilize. That means now may be the time to sell your used car, particularly before the calendar flips to 2021 and vehicles get one model year older, Drury said.You’ll get more for your used car if you trade it in now, but there’s a trade-off: “You’re also going to pay more for a new car,” Krebs said. 3489

Now, a growing number of residents are saying goodbye to cable and satellite, and subscribing to more affordable streaming services. "Really for us, I just felt guilty flipping through those channels all the time because I knew we're paying for them, but at the same time if it's not Game of Thrones we're not really watching anyway," said Jason Stump, who got rid of cable about four weeks ago. Stump, who lives in La Mesa, kept his cable for years because he feared not being able to watch live sports. But everything changed when he discovered that YouTube TV offered Fox Sports San Diego, which carries the Padres, four versions of ESPN, and the local channels. The price tag? a month, down from the 0 he was paying monthly for cable. Instead, people can buy antennas to get over-the-air HD, which is free and can have a better signal. San Diego's COX Cable offers a Contour streaming service for subscribers. "We work hard to make sure customers are paired with the services that they want and need," the company said in a statement. "With other services, you may need multiple subscriptions, additional hardware, inputs and passwords which are often inconvenient and provide less programming choices at potentially the same or increased cost, depending on how many subscription services you need to get all the content you want."Still, there are drawbacks to cutting the cord. Willcox said cable is convenient and reliable. For instance, streaming services can lag or crash during highly watched events like the Super Bowl or a Game of Thrones premier. "You might get one of the cable cutting services a month, but you want to add HBO, and that's a month," he said. This fall, however, he'll have to make a choice. He wants NFL Network, but unlike his former cable service, YouTube TV doesn't provide it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Included in the new defense budget bill just passed by Congress is what some call the most sweeping military housing reforms in decades. However, San Diego military families are concerned that a loophole will allow the private companies that oversee the housing developments to continue ignoring what they call "slum" conditions.10News has been digging for months into the problems reported by residents at local communities run by Lincoln Military Housing, one of the biggest companies in the industry. Residents say they have been plagued by mold, which has caused illness, as well as rodent and insect infestations, and shoddy maintenance and repairs.RELATED: .7 million awarded to Housing Commission to house military veterans"Lincoln Military Housing doesn't do a very good job of maintaining the infrastructure of these homes," says resident Erika Bradley.Bradley says the recent storms have led to more problems with leaks and mold. She says around 50 families living in the Santo Terrace community in Tierrasanta were forced to leave their homes and move into hotels.The new deal agreed to by Congress include the framework of significant reforms, including a tenant bill of rights, a strict set of regulations for how complaints should be handled, and an arbitration process that leaves the final decision in the hand of base commanders, rather than the companies. That means it's possible that it could be nearly 30 years before some of them would be forced to consider making changes."It's kind of something that looks really good on paper," Bradley says, "but how does it actually help us in our day to day lives?"10News asked if Lincoln plans to agree to the new procedures. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Local community activists put together a report that shows what they’re calling the roadmap to racial inequality, basing it on housing data from the 1930s.On Thursday morning, members of the community used red paint to outline zoning lines of the streets of Kensington. The lines were a physical representation of what happened after the Great Depression under the order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.Ricardo Flores, executive director of Local Initiatives Support Corporation, said, “The very benign use of zoning actually created segregation this day. It says if you can buy 7,000 square feet of land then you can live in this neighborhood.”Flores’ group and other organizations took to the streets to promote the data.“Today, in this day and age, you can ask a high school kid, ‘Where do black and brown people live?’ You ask any adult, ‘Where do black and brown people live? How do they know that? How is it so embedded in us?” said Flores.The activists hope to get support from San Diego officials and a promise in changing the way housing decisions are made.Flores said, “They should look at that parcel of land and allow them to be subdivided, sold, or build on it and rent it out.” 1221
