SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Starting Friday, city leaders are accepting the public's input on the future of the Sports Arena area.Members of the public can leave their feedback in a virtual open house (here) through Monday, July 20, where they can also look at plans proposed for the Midway District site.Right now, strip malls, the Sports Arena, and parking lots fill the 48-acre city-owned land. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Some students in the San Diego Unified School District are being allowed to return to campus Tuesday as the district begins the first phase of its reopening plan.The district began the 2020-21 school year on Aug. 31 with a distance learning program for its students. In recent weeks, during the distance learning period, teachers have been working to determine which students they believe would benefit from appointment-based in-person learning sessions.Appointment sessions will be voluntary; the rest of the time, those students will continue with distance learning.SD Unified officials said they’ve also been working with health experts in designing a reopening plan that would ensure all students and staff are safe.Despite the reopening plan, there are some parents who still do not believe it’s enough.On Tuesday afternoon, a group of parents called Reopen SDUSD has scheduled a rally at 4 p.m. in front of the Board of Education building to voice their concerns about the reopening plan.The group, which held a similar rally last month, is calling for a more detailed reopening plan and they want the district to be more transparent.Reopen SDUSD has gathered thousands of signatures for a petition urging the district to allow more students to return to campus.ABC 10News spoke with some parents at the September rally who said they want options because distance learning is not working for them.One mother said her children “dread going on Zoom. They dread being on the computer. They don’t like learning via the screen. They’re just losing a lot of interest, and I end up having to yell at them, ‘Do your work!’ And it’s frustrating because it impacts our relationship in a negative way.” 1725

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some San Diego bartenders are worried about the large crowds that could come into the area during the Fourth of July weekend.Seth Dominique said it's a tough time for bartenders. He works as a bartender in Pacific Beach, and he also has many friends in the same line of work that are all bracing for a high number of visitors for the holiday weekend."You can ask 10 bartenders, and nine of them will tell you the crowds are coming. The tourists are going to come. They're not going to stay at home," he said.Dominique said while many bars and restaurants have put proper social distancing in place, some customers don't always follow them. "At a certain point in time with alcohol consumption, people will -- not on purpose -- but they just stop listening," he said. "It's stressful because you're reminding people constantly, 'Put your mask on, don't move, don't stand in the middle of the floor.'"San Diego County has ordered bars that don't serve food to shut down. Restaurants can serve alcohol with food to people sitting at a table, and there is a 10 p.m. curfew in place."I really support the 10 p.m. idea; I don't think it's going to help this weekend because it's going to be a daytime crowd," Dominique said.Dominique said he and other bartenders are having to weigh financial benefits and health risks. He said he is young and healthy, so he doesn't worry about his health. However, he worries about getting the virus and possibly infecting family members who are older and more at risk. He started an online petition to close down at-risk sectors of San Diego for the holiday weekend.But with the Fourth of July weekend starting, Dominique doesn't believe it will yield any change but says it has value in giving many of his peers in the service industry a voice."Just be respectful, try to listen to your bartenders, try to listen to your servers," he said, "We're not trying to be hard on you. We understand your frustrations, but we're just trying to do our jobs. We're trying to stay open and get our economy going again."Bartenders have also started a petition in an effort to get bars to close on July Fourth. 2157

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several people were hospitalized after they reportedly fell ill at a Sorrento Valley pharmaceutical company.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to 6769 Mesa Ridge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a 60-year-old man was passed out outside the business, Inovio Pharmaceuticals.Bystanders reportedly began CPR and used a defibrillator on the man.Crews say that additional people were transported after falling ill. In all, two people transported themselves to Scripps Memorial Hospital while two others were transported by emergency crews.Their conditions are not known at this time.SDFD said they believe the victims became sick after eating food brought in by an employee.  727
