BONITA, Calif. (KGTV) - Hundreds of animals evacuated due to the Valley Fire are staying at county shelters.The San Diego County Department of Animal Services and the San Diego Humane Society are working together to rescue animals and care for them until they can be reunited with their owners.Nearly 300 pets and livestock are currently staying at the San Diego County of Department of Animal Services shelter in Bonita and the Iron Oak Canyon Ranch on Campo Road in Spring Valley.All horses should be brought to the Lakeside Rodeo Arena.Alma Pereda brought her dogs to the shelter in Bonita after the hotel she was evacuated to did not accept pets."Pretty hectic trying to get what we can, rescue first your family and then your pets," Pereda.Kelly Campbell is the director of the county's Department of Animal Services."We're working to try to support folks do have teams out in the field who are scouting in areas that may have been inaccessible for evacuations, welfare checks on animals, "said Campbell.They're also trying to balance the needs of pet owners with the requirements of the pandemic."They love their animals, want to come and see them, but need to make sure not in closed quarters due to COVID," said Campbell.Household pets are still being accepted at the shelter in Bonita, but it's at capacity for large animals. BRUCE, Wis. -- A school district in Wisconsin has made the decision to ban backpacks after multiple threats were discovered this week.WEAU-TV in Eau Claire, Wisconsin reports that a BB gun and several knives were located in a backpack at a school in Bruce Wednesday after a student scratched graffiti on a bathroom stall door. That student was taken into custody and has been suspended indefinitely.Earlier in the week, on Monday, there was a separate incident involving 'violent threats' made toward the school, WEAU says.With those threats in mind, Bruce Public Schools announced in a call to parents that backpacks would no longer be allowed at either the middle school or high school."Due the circumstances this week, no backpacks are allowed in middle school and high school as recommended by the sheriff’s department. All athletic gym bags will be searched before entering school," the district said in a Facebook post.The district's superintendent tells WEAU that in addition to the backpack ban, there will be a new entrance procedure when students comes back from spring break as well.  1123

Before you dip and indulge in chips and salsa this weekend in honor of Cinco de Mayo, check your chips.Utz, a Pennsylvania-based chip and snack food company, is recalling some of its tortilla chips because they may contain milk (not listed in the ingredients).Utz Quality Foods announced the voluntarily recall Thursday.The recall includes of some of its Golden Flake, Good Health, Utz and Weis brand tortilla chip products.The items have been shipped to 31 states and the District of Columbia, including Florida, according to the FDA. BENTONVILLE, Ark. – Romaine lettuce that was sold at Walmart stores across the country is being recalled because it may be contaminated with E. coli.Tanimura & Antle Inc. is voluntarily recalling its packaged single head romaine lettuce after at least 12 people in six states became infected with a strain of E. coli, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Five of those people were hospitalized.Health officials say they’ve determined that the E. coli strain in the affected lettuce was closely related genetically to the strain identified in ill people.The company says a total of 3,396 cartons of potentially affected product were distributed to the following states: Alaska, Arkansas, California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and the U.S. territory Puerto Rico.Walmart has released a list of more than 1,000 of its stores where the recalled lettuce was sold.Affected packages contain a single head of lettuce with the UPC number 0-27918-20314-9. They are labeled with the “packed on” dates 10/15/2020 or 10/16/2020. No other products or pack dates are being recalled.The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says this strain of E. coli causes diarrheal illness, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure. It’s most likely to occur in young children and the elderly. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death, according to the FDA.The CDC says people usually get sick from the E. coli two to eight days after swallowing the germ. Symptoms include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Some have a fever, which usually is not very high.
