SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - UC San Diego is a pilot school for an exposure notification system that alerts users if they’ve come in contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. It’s a partnership with the state of California and officially launched on campus Thursday.The system uses smartphone technology to anonymously tell people they may have been exposed. It does not track locations and is completely anonymous. It starts working when a person downloads the system on their phone and enables notifications. It then records proximity to other devices that also have the program downloaded. If two phones come in contact with each other for more than about 15 minutes and are closer than around six feet, it takes note of that. Then, if a person tests positive later, they can go in the program and click a button saying they tested positive, and their system sifts through all the devices that previously had extended exposure, sending those users alerts about the possible exposure.Doctor Christopher Longhurst, Chief Information Officer and Associate Chief Medical Officer for UCSD Health said the biggest factor that will impact effectiveness is the number of users.“We’d like to see 75% of that community or more adopting. Modeling done by Oxford and other universities has shown that if we can get over 50% adoption in a population, you can actually help to end outbreaks,” said Doctor Longhurst.As of Friday, about one day into the official launch, the school said 7,985 people had signed up. SAN DIEGO, Calif. — As we work to manage the pressure of the pandemic, a new device could take away some of the stress.San Diego State University (SDSU) engineers, biologists, mathematicians, computer scientists, and public health experts have worked together to develop a wearable device to detect early, remote detection of lung function abnormalities.“Knowing the current status of our health, I think that will give a lot of benefit," said Kee Moon, a researcher, and professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU. The size of a Band-Aid, the wearable device contains medical-grades sensors, collecting more than 4,000 data points per second. Placed on a person’s chest, it monitors heart and lung health, looking for problems in real-time.The device can detect abnormalities in the lungs before a person shows COVID-19 symptoms, alerting doctors before there’s a true emergency and hopefully preventing hospitalizations.By monitoring heart health, users can also get a better sense of their stress levels.“Understanding the level of stress you’re getting is important, as important as the other physical health monitoring," said Moon. Moon was already working on the technology before the pandemic to monitor other health conditions like asthma, COPD, sleep apnea, and lung cancer. But COVID-19 accelerated and pivoted the focus of the research.The team hopes to license the technology to a company that can produce and sell the device, likely at a price of around a few hundred dollars.“Seeing that would be a tremendous joy for me," said Moon.Moon is hopeful the wearable could be sold next year and that it will continue helping patients after the pandemic is over, delivering a sense of control in a time of such uncertainty. 1740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)— In the wake of two serious e-scooter accidents over the weekend, San Diego city leaders are working to update e-scooter regulations. While the scooters are off-limits on all city sidewalks, they are allowed on beach boardwalks. While some believe they are instrumental in freeing up car traffic and parking, others believe scooters just bring the congestion straight onto the boardwalks.Chase McKenna enjoys riding e-scooters at Pacific Beach. He says it is the best way to enjoy the boardwalk."Cruise around the strip right here and that's fun,” McKenna said. “They're convenient because down here, they're everywhere."But what is fun and convenient for McKenna, is a total nightmare for Paul Thackery."PB's great. The scooters are out of control,” Thackery said. He says some areas along the boardwalk are beginning to look like a scooter graveyard. He has also been hit by several intoxicated scooterists in the last several months. "I can't stand them. I ride my bike down here every day, and scooters are in the way, it's dangerous,” Thackery said. “I think they should get rid of them all together. "This weekend alone, at least two e-scooterists in San Diego were sent to the hospital for severe injuries. San Diego Police said a 39-year-old man fell off a scooter just before 10 pm Saturday in Mission Beach. He suffered life-threatening head injuries. Then at 12:30 am Sunday, just a mile away, a 62-year-old man lost control of his scooter, and crashed into a sidewalk. He suffered a neck fracture and facial abrasions.Since February 2018, two people in San Diego County have even died in scooter crashes. The city of San Diego is now defending against four e-scooter lawsuits that claim the city needed to enforce stronger regulations to prevent collisions and accidents.But in a crowded place like a boardwalk, McKenna says scooters are not the only issue."A person on their bicycle can be just as inconsiderate,” McKenna said. That is why McKenna says it is vital that each rider regulates themselves. We met Tracy Grimmett, a visitor from Modesto, doing a few practice laps before taking off for the first time. “Yes, without running into all the people around here. Yes, trying!” she laughed. She hopes to have fun while being considerate, as they share the busy boardwalk with thousands of weekenders."Be courteous around people, go slow,” McKenna said. “If there's a lot of people, you have to slow down, and you have to give other people the right of way."The city of San Diego is now considering making companies install “geo-fencing” on the scooters. SAN DIEGO -- A woman is on high alert after she says a six-foot-long rattlesnake nearly attacked her dog Friday.Willow, 20, says she let her small dog out just before 10 a.m. Friday in San Diego.According to the 20-year-old, the dog started running around when Willow noticed a snake. She quickly grabbed the dog and started running back inside.Firefighters responded and found the massive red diamond rattlesnake cozying up net to some rocks near a fence line.A firefighter was able to safely remove the snake with tongs. Crews say this rattlesnake is the largest they’ve ever seen.After being fed and taken care of by a 3rd party, the snake will be released into the wild. 697

SAN DIGEO (KGTV) - The number of calls to San Diego County’s Child Abuse Hotline has dropped by more than half since schools across the region closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease.County data provided to 10News shows a more than 50 percent decrease in calls regarding allegations of child abuse or neglect.According to the county, for the week of March 9 to 15, there were 1,859 calls.
