CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — Shortly after the De Luz Fire ignited on Camp Pendleton Wednesday, an unnamed Gunnery Sergeant jumped into action to evacuate more than 70 students.The brush fire broke out on base just after 12 p.m., prompting several precautionary evacuations of nearby structures, including schools, businesses, and hundreds of homes in the DeLuz Housing area.While there were no students or staff at Mary Fay Elementary School at the time of the fire, the base says, there were 73 students at the nearby Child Development Center that needed to be evacuated.An unnamed Gunnery Sgt. with the Provost Marshall’s Office commandeered a city transit bus to evacuate the children and residents, the base said. Emergency Services Battalion police and fire crews, along with NCIS agents, also helped transfer each student to the evacuation point to be reunited with their families."This Gunnery Sgt. exhibited but one example of the brave, fast-thinking actions that were taken this day," a release from Camp Pendleton officials said.Within three hours of sparking, the De Luz Fire was largely stamped out by firefighters as high temperatures brought an elevated threat of wildfires to the county on Wednesday."Their quick and heavy response, deploying all available units and requesting aid from CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire Authority, allowed for residents to return to their homes within four hours after evacuating," the release added.The only loss from the fire was an NCIS government vehicle, according to officials. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - At the ripe age of 74, scientist Wladek Minor, PhD. is not slowing down anytime soon, especially when it comes to his research to better understand COVID-19.“This is the biggest danger I’ve seen in my lifetime,” said Minor. “This is a real danger, and we shouldn’t underestimate it.”Minor, who is also a professor at UVA’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, recently made a new discovery in the fight against coronavirus.As the lead researcher, Minor and his team of scientists recently discovered a link between a coronavirus treatment and people with diabetes.They found the drug dexamethasone, which is used to lower the risk of death in patients with a severe case of the virus, might be less effective for treating patients with diabetes.“We were trying to explain why the action of dexamethasone is somewhat erratic,” Minor said. “It means it works for some people and [does] not necessarily work for other people.”Minor and his team analyzed data from 373 COVID-19 patients at a hospital from Wuhan, China.Their research determined how a type of protein in our blood, called serum albumin, picks up dexamethasone and carries it through the body.The scientists found that patients who died had lower levels of that protein than those who survived.Those who died also had higher levels of blood sugar, suggesting diabetes may make it difficult for patients to get the benefits of the drug.“We are trying to make as much impact on human life as possible,” said Minor.Dexamethasone has been shown to cut deaths by about 30% for COVID-19 patients who were on ventilators.The steroid was used to help treat President Donald Trump’s bout with the virus, along with other treatments and drugs including remdesivir, which was just approved by the FDA to use on all hospitalized patients.“COVID is now our enemy, and really, it’s the biggest enemy,” Minor said.Scientists said more research is needed to determine the best treatment for COVID-19 patients, especially for those who have diabetes.For more information on Minor’s research, click here.This story was first reported by Antoinette DelBel at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2180

Chanel White has missed going to karaoke bars, but when it comes to being in quarantine, she’s used to it.“Life hasn’t been too different from what it normally was for me,” Chanel White said.In 2011, White was diagnosed with systemic sclerosis, an auto-immune disease.“Basically my body just sees myself, my tissue, my organs as something foreign and something that should be attacked,” White said.She gets nutrients through a feeding tube and takes a lot of different medications. She’s also considered high risk of contracting COVID-19.“Pneumonia is basically the number one cause of death for people with my condition.”Based on a report by Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, White should be among those who get the novel coronavirus vaccine as soon as it’s available.“Ethics is the essence of this,” Dr. Eric Toner said.Dr. Toner is a Senior Scholar with Johns Hopkins. Who gets the vaccine first will ultimately be up to the Department of Health and Human Services, but Dr. Toner says the report is meant to offer an ethical framework to help prioritize who gets the vaccine and when.“First of all it’d be health care workers who are taking care of COVID-19 patients. That seems pretty straight forward and non-controversial,” Dr. Toner said.Also in the first tier would be people who are essential to the pandemic response – like those doing the vaccinating, people on the front lines of public health and people working in nursing homes.That first tier would also include the men and women who have helped maintain some normalcy during the pandemic.“Think of front-line transportation workers like bus drivers, think about people working grocery stores, people who work in food production, people who keep the lights on and the water running,” Dr. Toner said.White would be in tier one, but her medical situation is quite complicated.“I right now can’t get vaccines,” White said.She says the treatment she’s receiving heavily reduces her immune response so her body doesn’t attack itself. So depending on the type of vaccine, she would either develop COVID-19, or the vaccine wouldn’t do anything for her.“It’s a weird circumstance because I don’t think the world thinks a lot about people like us. They just think ‘oh the sick people are especially going to need this,’” White said.Dr. Toner says there is an alternative solution.“Vaccinate everyone around them. So vaccinate their families, their caregivers,” Dr. Toner said.“Clearly herd immunity can save an immeasurable number of lives. And so really for someone like me that really is my best shot,” White said.Getting enough people who have an immune response to the vaccine will depend on its effectiveness.“We are ensuring that the vaccine is safe and we’re ensuring that the vaccine is effective. And we will try to get it out as fast as we can, of course, but we won’t cut any corners,” Dr. Toner said.For now, White is choosing to focus on the positive."Hopefully the world will come out better because of this and empathic to their fellow man. But I do hope for a future where I can go to karaoke again,” White said. 3100
