NEW DELHI, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Sonia Gandhi, chairperson of India's ruling Congress-led United Progress Alliance (UPA), Friday expressed her wish that relations between India and China can be enhanced with common efforts by the two countries.     During a meeting with visiting Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Gandhi said that there exists a very solid basis for developing friendly and cooperative relations between India and China. Dai conveyed cordial greeting and good wishes from General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and Chinese President Hu Jintao, who also expressed his congratulations to the Congress party and the UPA for successfully winning a second term of government in the general elections this year. He said that President Gandhi has personally made great efforts for the development of Sino-Indian relations as leader of the UPA and the Congress party.     Dai also said China is willing to make common efforts with India to upgrade the bilateral strategic cooperative partnership to a new level.     Gandhi also memorized the 1988 historic visit to China by her late husband, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, as well as her attendance of the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.     She expressed her wish that as the 60th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and China is nearing, the peoples of India and China, especially the youth of the two countries, increase human exchanges to build a good social foundation for furthering friendship between the two countries.     Dai and Gandhi also exchanged views on strengthening friendly ties between the Communist Party of China and the Congress party of India.

BEIJING, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- As more people made return trips to go back home and work, China saw a traffic boom on Thursday. Road transport departments nationwide carried 62.23 million passengers on Thursday, up 9.0 percent over the same day last year, according to the Ministry of Transport (MOT).     In the eight-day holiday, a total of 488 million passengers made journeys by road transport, representing an increase of 6.8 percent over the same period last year. BEIJING, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping on Saturday called for serious study and implementation of a decision of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on strengthening and improving Party building.     The decision was adopted in mid-October at the fourth session of the 17th CPC Central Committee.     The essence of the session must be implemented in an all-out, steadfast and efficient way, said Xi, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, while delivering a report to 1,800attendants at the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     The six pieces of experience summarized in the document are an embodiment of the endeavors of several generations of Chinese Communists in the 60 years of ruling of the Party, and are a treasure of the Party, said Xi, also president of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     The decision is focused on major issues regarding Party building, which are strategic, fundamental and urgent, he said, adding it is a major task for Party organizations of all levels to study and implement the essence of the session under the current new situation.     Central and local Party schools are a major place to train and foster Party members, leading officials and theorists, as well as study Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought and the socialist theoretical system with China's characteristics, Xi said.

BEIJING, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- China vows to strengthen the prevention and control of the A/H1N1 flu virus in the run-up to the National Day celebrations, amid fears that the situation will worsen through autumn. According to a statement released after a meeting held by the State Council here Monday, schools are currently the key places in the country's fight against the virus and classes should be suspended "properly" to avoid mass infection when an outbreak occurs.     "Currently the global epidemic situation is getting worse. As autumn comes, the number of domestic cases in China is also on the rise... The prevention and control work faces fresh obstacles," said the statement.     Primary and secondary schools in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, remained closed Monday in the wake of a recent outbreak of 43 A/H1N1 influenza cases.     Similar outbreaks have also been reported at schools in other regions, including the provinces of Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hainan, as well as the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.     The State Council urged railway and aviation departments to improve their emergency plan against possible epidemic outbreak in crowded situations.     According to the statement, medical staff, technical equipment and materials should be ready at any moment in case of an emergency -- especially around the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.     In addition, the State Council urged medical companies to stock vaccine and other medicines and ensure vaccine safety for human use.     The meeting was presided over by premier Wen Jiabao.     By last Friday night, 4,415 cases of A/H1N1 flu had been reported on the Chinese mainland, of which 3,577 have recovered. There have been no deaths from A/H1N1 in main land China.
