FALLBROOK (KGTV) -- Deputies are investigating a suspicious death in Fallbrook Tuesday afternoon. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the death was reported at Live Oak Park Road and North Ridge Drive in Fallbrook at an unknown time. At this time, it’s unclear how the individual died and how the body was discovered. Deputies investigated, then called in homicide detectives to take charge of the case, Lt. (KGTV) -- Firefighters responded to the scene of a half-acre brush fire in Escondido Monday afternoon. Cal Fire said the brush fire broke out near Del Dios Highway and Mount Israel Road.Firefighters wer able to extinguish the flames quickly but will remain on scene for several hours. Del Dios Highway appears to have reopened in both directions after the fire prompted the closure, causing traffic to back up for miles during rush hour. .@CALFIRESANDIEGO and cooperators are at scene of a half-acre vegetation fire near DelDios Hwy and Mount Israel Rd. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - Escondido Police requested the public’s assistance Monday to find the driver responsible of a crash that seriously injured a motorcyclist. The incident happened Oct. 16 at 4:38 p.m. in the 200 block of W. Washington Ave., police said. A man driving a white Ford F-150 pickup truck struck the motorcyclist and left the scene, according to investigators. Police said the man was in his late 30s, Hispanic, and had a mustache. He was wearing a gray shirt and baseball cap. There was a woman in the passenger seat and a child sitting between them. The first two digits on the license plate may be 8F. Police said the Ford F-150 will have damage to the rear passenger side tail light and tailgate. (KGTV) - An Escondido family was surprised with a life-changing gift Tuesday morning, brand new appliances for their home.The gift was made possible through a partnership between the Boys & Girls Club of America and Maytag.“When I heard my name I was speechless, I was overwhelmed," said Rosie Montejano. "I thought I was being tricked, but then I was like, no it’s us, it’s us!"Montejano's children attend the Escondido Boys & Girls Club after-school program.“The security that my kids get picked up, they’re watched, and I don’t have to worry about who’s watching my children," said Montejano.She explains it's been a difficult few years, with her older daughter battling addiction. The family adopted her daughter's two children, so now they take care of five.While Montejano can't donate financially to the Boys & Girls Club, she donates her time. She also asks her employer Walmart to donate goods to the Club whenever they can.Last year Danny Sherlock, President & CEO of Boys & Girls Club of Greater San Diego, won the Maytag Dependable Leader Award, which allowed him the opportunity to pay it forward to others.Montejano's generosity never went unnoticed by branch manager Dave Luevanos, who nominated her for the Maytag donation made possible through Sherlock's leadership award."I feel truly blessed today, and I am overwhelmed," said Montejano.She's looking forward to having a new refrigerator and washer and dryer in time for the holidays. 1495

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The Golden State Killer arrest is shining the spotlight on a controversial DNA search known as Familial DNA.    In the summer of 2013, communities in southern California were gripped by fear amid a string of unspeakable crimes.An unknown culprit dubbed "The Creeper" entered five homes in Escondido and one in San Marcos, cutting screens, cutting the clothes of little girls and molesting them while they slept.The suspect left DNA at several scenes, but a search turned up no matches. Ultimately, the case went cold until detectives applied to the State Department of Justice for a DNA familial search.In 2015, the mystery DNA profile was linked to somebody already in the system, a close relative of the suspect."They were able to determine through a familial search who the suspect likely was," said Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders.That suspect was Gilbert Chavarria, who recently pleaded guilty to a host of charges. He was sentenced to 100 years to life in prison."Police did an excellent job gathering the evidence, but the leads were exhausted. Without the familial searches, we'd still be on our hands waiting," said Saunders.Amid concerns from privacy advocates, California Governor Jerry Brown in 2008 enacted a policy that familial DNA would be used only as a last resort.It's been rarely used. but did provide the break in several serial killer cases, including the Los Angeles-area Grim Sleeper case and in the Golden State Killer case. In the latter, the mystery DNA was linked to a familial profile from an ancestry website.Some law enforcement experts say the recent cases could lead to a lot more requests for the DNA search. Familial DNA also provided the break in the infamous BTK serial killer case in Kansas. 1854
