2020 ends with so many communities in the West looking for a place to begin to rebound after historic wildfires destroyed towns.Virginia Camberos' home survived the fires that destroyed the towns of Talent and Phoenix in southern Oregon in September. She is an advocate with Unite Oregon and is working with many members of the Latino community who lost everything to the flames."I’ll tell you that our community is still in dire straits. The fact that they don’t have a home. The holidays are upon us and we have just helped as many folks as we can giving out 0 gift cards to help them alleviate the struggle of getting shoes for their children, food, all the hygienic supplies that they need," Virginia said.In the weeks leading up to the 2020 Presidential Election, Virginia helped those who lost their homes register to vote. Oregon is a vote by mail state and there was the potential that ballots would be sent to addresses where people no longer lived. She posted signs in English and Spanish around southern Oregon, making sure people knew how to receive their ballot even if they lost everything. Now that the election has passed, the focus stays on not only the recovery from the fires but also the pandemic."I think that one of the things I wanted to convey to you all today is that COVID went out the window for many of the families," Virginia said. "They ended up having to go in and live with their relatives or friends and all that, and we’ve had a surge of cases that have risen here in southern Oregon because of that.”We hope folks all across the country are doing their best to help many of these families by giving donations to our organization, which we in turn then give to families so they can pay their rent, buy food, clothes, whatever they need, and that’s some of the things that we continue to do.”For more information on Unite Oregon's efforts head to their website here. 1908
(KGTV) — National Geographic and Fox Networks will investigate astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson over allegations of sexual misconduct, according to reports.Accounts by two women were published Thursday, claiming Tyson misbehaved in a sexually inappropriate manner with them, according to Patheos.com. The women, a Bucknell University professor and former assistant to Tyson according to the accounts, both claimed the astrophysicist made inappropriate sexual advances toward them.Tyson has not commented on the allegations against him, according to the Associated Press. In a statement to the AP, the producers of the television show "Cosmo" said: "The credo at the heart of 'Cosmos' is to follow the evidence wherever it leads. The producers of 'Cosmos' can do no less in this situation."Tyson was the host of "Cosmos" on Fox in 2014 and a new edition of the series was set to air on National Geographic next year sometime. "Cosmo" producers said they will conduct a thorough investigation.Tyson has appeared on numerous television programs and is the director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. The Associated Press contributed to this report. 1205
(KGTV) --There is another effort to tackle our housing problems in California in the form of Proposition 21.Prop. 21, also known as the Rental Affordability Act, would allow local governments to have more authority over rent control on residential properties over 15 years old.It would exempt individuals who own two homes or less from new rent-control policies.Kimberly Ellis has been renting her current Santee apartment for three years. With rent—plus bills and food—she said everything “is just so expensive.”With her husband facing medical issues and her rent increasing every year, she said rent control is needed. “I live on a budget. It’s hard when the rent goes up,” Ellis said.A television ad for Yes on 21 is sponsored by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. The organization has committed major funding to the cause.Pt. Loma Nazarene University’s Chief Economist Lynn Reaser said the advertisement “doesn’t even tell us what Proposition 21 even does.”She clarified it for voters.“It allows local governments to set their own rent control measures that would be different from what the state now has, which basically caps rent increases at 5 percent plus rate of inflation,” Reaser said. She said the ad got two facts right—homelessness is increasing and unemployment is high.According to the California Employment Development Department, unemployment is more than 13 percent. While it is lower than the record from the start of this pandemic, it is still above the mark set in 2010 during the great recession. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation launched a similar rent control ballot measure a couple years ago, which failed.According to the Legislative Analyst’s Office, it is likely state and local entities will lose money if Prop. 21 passes. The report said it could be in the “high tens of millions of dollars per year over time.”“Depending on actions by local communities, revenue losses could be less or more,” the ballot analysis said. 1953
