New studies confirm that multiple types of steroids improve survival for severely ill COVID-19 patients, cementing the cheap drugs as a standard of care.An analysis of pooled results from seven studies found that steroids reduced the risk of death in the first month by about one-third compared to placebo treatment or usual care alone in these seriously ill patients who needed extra oxygen.The work was led by the World Health Organization and published Wednesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association.Based on the results of the studies, the WHO has made two recommendations. The first, it says a strong corticosteroid therapy for 7 to 10 days should be used in patients with severe or critical COVID-19. The second, this therapy should not be used in patients with non-severe COVID-19, because it may increase the risk of death.“In contrast, in patients with non-severe COVID-19, based on data from 1,535 patients in one study, systemic corticosteroids may increase the risk of 28-day mortality,” researchers wrote.Compared to other treatments for COVID-19, these types of steroids are generally low cost, easy to administer and readily available across the globe.“Dexamethasone and prednisolone are among the most commonly listed medicines in national essential medicines lists; listed by 95% of countries. And that means states that have had to put executions on hold, might be able to resume.So why fentanyl? Such was the case for officers in North Ridgeville, Ohio, who received a call from a man who said while walking home from a train station, a pig started following him, and he didn't know what to do.Thinking he had just left the bar in Elyria named the Train Station, police went out to pick up the caller, who they believed was drunk.When officers arrived, they found the man stone-cold sober, complete with his four-legged stalker in tow.According to authorities, the man told them he was walking home from an Amtrak station when the animal decided to go for a walk with him.In the end, the pig was very cooperative and was placed in the back of a police cruiser and taken to the station. Police made the animal feel at home for a bit inside the department's dog kennels until the owner was notified, and it was picked up.Authorities didn't say if the owner was cited for having a pig on the loose.  1021

Newly released dash cam video shows a drunk driver talking with police officers just minutes before he got back into his car, drove off and then collided head-on with a woman, killing them both.The incident happened December 30, 2017.Testing would later determined that Desten Houge's blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.The video show the aftermath of a single car accident, where Houge lost control and then ended up in the ditch. That accident happened around 4 p.m.Pittsfield Township Sgt. Matthew Hornbeck can be seen talking with Houge and then helping him up after he fell down.Hornbeck would call a tow truck to get the 32-year-old Houge's car out of the ditch. The driver discovered the rear sway bar was busted, but the car was still drivable.Hornbeck and another police officer would clear the scene, but they did not give Houge a field sobriety test.Roughly an hour later and another 1,000 feet down Michigan Avenue, witnesses reported seeing Houge's car fishtailing, then crossing the center line, slamming into another vehicle driven by 55-year-old Lake Jacobson, who died four days later of injuries suffered in the crash.In police reports obtained by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit, witnesses describe being surprised by the speed Houge was driving, considering he was losing control.Another witness, who swerved to miss Houge, said they saw car parts flying before the collision.The reports cite car condition and a possible collision with a pothole as a factor in the crash. However, those reports were from before Houge's autopsy came back, establishing he had a BAC of .24, as well as THC in his system.Both Hornbeck and the other officer who helped Houge before the fatal accident said they did not notice any signs of impairment.WXYZ was unable to reach Pittsfield Township Police for comment.
