(KGTV) - A woman run over and killed by a construction vehicle at an Oceanside beach was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.The ME’s Office said 68-year-old Carol Aguirre died in the incident that occurred Sept. 28 on the beach near Oceanside's South Harbor. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A fire that broke out Friday afternoon in Oceanside burned one victim, fire officials said.The flames were reported about 3 p.m. in the 600 block of Sleeping Indian Road. Oceanside Fire reported the "main fire has been knocked down" by 4:15 p.m., however crews expected to be on scene for several more hours.One person was burned and is being taken to the hospital, according to Oceanside Fire.Officials said the fire started in an area of RVs and spread to mulch. A neighbor told 10News the mobile homes belong to people who work in the area. Hazmat crews were called in after firefighters learned of previous drug activity on the property. There was also a concern about fuel and propane on site. However, Hazmat crews did not find any hazardous materials present. Five brush rigs and four engines were sent to the scene, fire officials said. Just ask Gary Swimpson."I have a 7-year-old grandson that can read better than me," he says, "it hurts. I'm 61 years old, I'm supposed to be reading to him, but I can't let that get me down. I have to keep pushing forward."Pushing forward is Gary's mantra. He exudes positivity, but it wasn't always that way. "As far as my background, where I come from, 'the hood' and all that, you know I made a lot of bad choices coming up and so I'm trying to do the right thing in life for the first time in my life." He says the hardest part of his journey has been having the strength to continue pushing himself to do it. "When you never read growing up and now you're in your fifties or sixties and you try it, it's a challenge."When Gary moved from Los Angeles to Oceanside, he decided it was time for a fresh start, beginning about a year and a half ago with the Oceanside READS Learning Center.Chelsea Genack Eggli, the literacy coordinator for Oceanside Public Library, said, "It takes a lot of courage and it takes a lot of strength to go back to school when somebody is older in life," she says.Before the pandemic, literacy tutors met with adult learners in person, one-on-one. Now they meet via Zoom."He was having a hard time seeing his growth. I saw it because when he came he wasn't reading at all, and then he read a chapter book," says Chelsea. Gary says, "It made me just feel so good," when he saw the numbers on an assessment showing his progress.Now, not only is Gary reading, he's also writing poetry for a contest --- an ode to Oceanside. When asked what he'd like to say to others who could benefit from the program, Gary says, "Well, we have always heard that it's never too late right? It's how much you believe in yourself." He goes on to say, "There's always a chance to get your life together as long as you're breathing. It worked for me and I'm really grateful, and anybody can do it. One day after a young girl was struck by a foul ball at Yankee Stadium, players are calling on MLB to expand netting at all stadiums. Currently, just five of 30 MLB stadiums have netting that cover sections closer to the dugouts, despite a 2015 safety recommendation to expand netting from dugout to dugout. Currently in the majority of MLB stadiums, the netting provides protection for field-level seats behind home plate, exposing fans who sit behind the dugouts. Although a number of minor league stadiums have upgraded netting, the majority of MLB stadiums have not followed suit. The young girl struck by a foul ball on Wednesday was sitting behind the third base dugout. After Wednesday's incident, some players are left wondering, "What will it take" to expand netting. "I don't care about the damn view of a fan or what,'' Twins second baseman Brian Dozier told reporters after the game. "It's all about safety. I still have a knot in my stomach."MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday that the league would once again discuss expanding netting. "The events at yesterday's game involving a young girl were extremely upsetting for everyone in our game," Manfred told ESPN's Bob Ley. "Over the past few seasons MLB has worked with our clubs to expand the amount of netting in our ballparks.
