Former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel is slated to take his talents north of the border, as Manziel announced on Saturday he has signed a contract with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. Manziel has faced challenges both on and off the football field since winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy. "I want to get on the field and get in the locker room and get a chance to play ball again. This is the best opportunity for me." Manziel said he is grateful for a second chance at professional football. Manziel is expected not to start at quarterback Hamilton, coach June Jones said. He will compete for the backup job behind former Oregon star Jeremiah Masoli. "Johnny is going to be a competitive player in this league," Jones said. "I feel he'll compete and competition makes everyone better."Manziel said he is ready to move forward and has learned from past missteps. "I have learned a lot from the mistakes. I feel like I wouldn't be where I am today on a personal, on a football level, going back into a locker room, if I didn't go through what I went through," Manziel said. "I am back to a point in my life where I am not taking anything for granted."One name mentioned in Manziel's press conference in Hamilton was Doug Flutie. Both Flutie and Manziel won the Heisman Trophy and went to the CFL after initial struggles in the NFL out of college. "Last election in 2016, rates were in the lower threes. Literally, two to three days later rates went into the fours. That’s how violent and how rapid interest rates can move. A lot of folks', mistakes people make is they think the government makes interest rates. They don't. Interest rates for mortgages are controlled by bond market activity," said Garcia. Specifically, Garcia says, treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities."Now, at some point, depending on what the next president decides to do, if that affects monetary policy by the Fed(eral Reserve) and the Fed has already come out and said we don't plan on changing anything but the president has the ability to influence that. If they make a decision that could ultimately affect what the Fed’s decision on monetary policy is, we would see a rapid increase in interest rates according with that," said Garcia.Another potential big influence on interest rates? "If COVID-19 is cured, you’re going to see rates spike overnight. Or any kind of change in economic policy or even, too, the economy itself being affected by COVID has the potential to drive interest rates a lot higher. So, there’s definitely on the horizon two major components, the election and COVID cure that are going to affect interest rates going forward," said Garcia.Garcia says it's best to take advantage of interest rates while they're low. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and Emma Gonzalez, who took cover in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, during a 2018 school massacre, made the case for gun control on Wednesday at that Democratic National Convention.Giffords was victimized by gun violence as a member of Congress at a town hall event in her Arizona district in 2011. The incident nearly took her life, as she spent months in recovery. There were six people fatally wounded at the 2011 incident.“America needs all of us to speak out, even when you have to fight to find the words,” Giffords said. “We are at a crossroads. We can let the shooting continue or we can act. We can protect our families, our future. We can vote. We can be on the right side of history.”Giffords' husband Mark Kelly is running for a Senate seat in Arizona.
