GUANGZHOU, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Two nuclear power stations under construction have not been affected by a mild earthquake that struck south China's Guangdong Province Friday, company officials said.According to the provincial earthquake monitoring network, an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale Friday hit the junction of Taishan City and Yangjiang City where the two nuclear power stations are located."The nuclear power stations being built were not at all affected as the facilities were designed to withstand at least 8-magnitude earthquakes," said a spokesman of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Holding Corporation (CGNPC).He said the sites of these two power stations were carefully chosen and approved by the China Earthquake Administration. Records show that the strongest earthquake that shook the sites did not exceed 6.0 in magnitude.The construction of the Yangjiang Nuclear Power Station -- with a full installed capacity of 6 million kilowatts -- started in December 2008 and is planned to be put into commercial operation in 2013. The construction of the Taishan Nuclear Power Station -- with an initial installed capacity of 3.5 million kilowatts -- started in 2009 and is expected to be completed around 2014, the CGNPC said.

TAIYUAN/HARBIN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The death toll in an explosion at a coal mine in Linfen City of north China's Shanxi Province early Saturday has risen to 17 after another two bodies were found, local authorities said.The blast at Liugou Coal Mine of Yicheng County also left 104 persons injured, seven of them seriously, as of 11 p.m. Saturday, said Wang Jianshe, head of the county's People's Hospital, where all the injured were admitted.All the injured are in stable condition, Wang said.Basic search and rescue work is over, said a senior official of Yangquan Coal Industry (Group) Co. Ltd, which owns the mine. The official said that the blast took place in the dormitory area, where most of buildings were destroyed by the powerful explosion.A miner surnamed Zhang told Xinhua that families of many miners had come to live here because the children were currently on their summer vacation.But officials so far have not disclosed how many children and women had died during the accident.Zhang said he saw a couple died after huge stones fell on them in a dormitory room.Initial investigation showed that the blast was caused by explosives hidden illegally in the area, and a suspect has been detained by the police, the official said.A further Investigation into the cause of the blast is underway.Also on Saturday, 24 people were trapped in a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province.The city government said the accident at Hengxinyuan Mine took place at around 5 p.m. Saturday. BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- There have been no reports of an epidemic outbreak or public health incident in the northwestern Zhouqu County that was hit by a massive mudslide Sunday, a health official said Wednesday.Zhang Guoxin, vice director of the emergency office of the Health Ministry, made the remarks at a press conference in Beijing.Emergency medical rescue work was coming to an end and now epidemic prevention was the priority for health authorities, Zhang said.At least 702 people were killed and 1,042 others are missing after Sunday's mudslide.A total of 422 injured have been treated as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. All those who were seriously hurt have been sent to hospitals in the cities of Lanzhou and Tianshui, Zhang said.A survivor who was rescued 60 hours after the mudslide has been transferred to the Gansu Provincial People's Hospital and was currently in stable condition."All the injured have been properly treated," Zhang said.Forty-seven civilian and military medical teams with 779 members are working in Zhouqu, nine of whom are extremely well qualified and rank among the best in the country.A total area of 310,000 square meters has been sterilized by the teams.Health authorities have prepared 50,000 pamphlets on health risks for local residents.Zhang said health authorities were attempting to rebuild hospitals and clinics in Zhouqu as quickly as possible.
