A Michigan lawmaker has been removed from her committee assignments after telling Trump supporters to "tread lightly" in a since-deleted video on Facebook.The comments by State Rep. Cynthia Johnson, a Democrat representing Detroit, came days after she made national headlines by sharing threatening voicemails calling for her to be lynched. The caller was upset with Johnson's actions in a hearing with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who was seeking to overturn the results of the presidential election in the state. On Tuesday evening, Johnson posted a three-minute video to Facebook that concluded with language that Trump supporters took as a direct threat."So, this is just a warning to you Trumpers. Be careful. Walk lightly. We ain’t playing with you. Enough of the shenanigans. Enough is enough," Johnson said. "And for those of you who are soldiers, you know how to do it. Do it right. Be in order. Make them pay. I love y’all."Johnson later claimed that she was not using the term "soldiers" in a threatening way, but was only using it to refers to people in the Black community. "In the Black community, we call ourselves 'soldiers' against racism ... 'soldiers' for democracy. That's what 'soldiers' means in our community," she said.Her video also encouraged her supporters to oppose racism "right and in order."But the comments have caused significant backlash among Trump supporters. One Trump supporter, Roberta Adams, told Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit that she reported Johnson's comments to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.On Wednesday, House Speaker Lee Chatfield Speaker-elect Jason Wentworth — both of whom are Republicans — said that Johnson had been removed from her committee assignments and that they were exploring further disciplinary action against her."Threats to either Republicans or Democrats are unacceptable and un-American," the two said, in part, in a joint statement.On Thursday, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, said she thought Chatfield and Wentworth went overboard in their punishment. "I think that removing her from her committees is too far, truly ... I have reached out and asked the incoming House leadership to reconsider that," Whitmer said.Whitmer added that Johnson has been through a lot in recent months. A pharmacist was arrested for allegedly luring an Indiana woman to his Colorado home and then drugging and sexually assaulting her multiple times, according to a release from the Teller County Sheriff’s Office. And investigators believe there are more victims who have yet to come forward.Brent Stein, 46, was a pharmacist with Mountain Key Pharmacy in Florissant, Colorado, about 2 hours southwest of Denver. His pharmacy license was suspended this week as he was booked on three counts of sexual assault, but has since bonded out of the Teller County Detention Facility.The investigation into the allegations against Stein began on June 18, when Teller County detectives received information there was a sexual assault victim at a hospital in Colorado Springs, the sheriff’s office said.The victim told investigators that she had met Stein on a dating website and that the suspect had made promises to heal her medical conditions and that he was a pharmacist, the Teller County release read.The victim traveled from Indiana to Stein’s home, and during her stay, she claims she was given un-prescribed medication by Stein, which resulted in her being incapacitated. Investigators allege the victim was sexually assaulted multiple times by Stein while the victim was under the influence of the unknown medication.Upon further investigation, other victims have come forward to report unwanted sexual conduct by Stein, the sheriff’s office said. Detectives believe there might be other victims and are asking anyone who knows anything about this case or may be an additional victim to come forward. A United States Customs and Border Protection officer is accused of falsely claiming to be a US citizen when he applied for the job, the Department of Justice said. According to DOJ officials, Marco Antonio De La Garza Jr., 37, of Hereford, Ariz. was charged with three counts of passport fraud and false statements on his federal law enforcement background application. The DOJ is claiming that De La Garza knowingly used a fraudulently obtained Texas birth certificate to apply for a United States passport. De La Garza is also accused of using the same birth certificate to claim US citizenship during his background check.It is unknown how US officials were unable to figure out that De La Garza's paperwork was fraudulent.  The charges stemmed from an investigation conducted by  the Department of State-Diplomatic Security Service and the Department of Homeland Security-Office of Inspector General. The DOJ claims that De La Garza was actually born in Mexico. The Associated Press confirmed that he was hired by border patrol in 2012.   1116

A police union representing officers with the Rochester Police Department claimed Friday that the video of Daniel Prude's arrest that was released by the department was "not complete" and "not accurate."Michael D. Mazzeo, the president of the Rochester Police Locust Club, did not get into specifics as to what was missing from the version of the video released by the Rochester Police Department on Wednesday, citing that an investigation was ongoing.Mazzeo also said that the officers' use of a "spit hood" was within department protocols and consistent with their training, adding that officers had gone through mandated state training between 30 and 40 days prior to the incident.He he added that Prude had made references to have tested positive for coronavirus during the incident.He also called for the New York Attorney General to conduct an "impartial" and "transparent" investigation.Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren suspended seven officers Thursday after video was released that showed officers shoving Prude's head into the ground for about two minutes after finding him naked and bleeding in the street. Prude died a week later after he was taken off life support.Prude's family said he was in the midst of a mental health crisis at the time of the incident.Mazzeo also claimed that one of the suspended officers was not even involved in the Prude incident and called for the city's "law department" to be held accountable for what he described as mistakes in their investigation.He said the Locust Club was not involved in the internal investigation into the incident until Wednesday and was not aware ahead of time that the seven officers would be suspended. A Michigan State University trustee who pledged support for victims of sex abuse has opposed them repeatedly in courtrooms as a lawyer, an investigation by Scripps station WXYZ in Detroit has found.Trustee Dan Kelly was elected to the board of trustees in 2016 as the Larry Nassar sex abuse scandal erupted.  His university bio touts 25 years experience as an attorney representing school districts.  In at least seven cases reviewed by WXYZ, Kelly represented districts accused of failing to protect students from sex abuse.Kelly has represented districts like Roseville, Dundee and, at least four times, Warren Consolidated Schools in sex abuse civil cases.Former Warren gym teacher James Kearly pleaded no contest to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct charges involving three young girls.  In 2004, Kearly and Warren Schools were sued by the victims’ parents, alleging the district ignored more than a decade’s worth of Kearly’s documented fondling.As abuse allegations stacked up, according to testimony, the district moved Kearly to a school that taught younger students in the hopes that he would be less attracted to underdeveloped elementary school girls.While there, three second grade girls said Kearly molested them.“He touched my privates, Mr. K,” testified one of his young victims. “Sometimes in the office and sometimes in the gym.”During trial, Kelly told jurors the district couldn’t be held responsible for Kearly’s actions and, while there was no excuse for what he did, “the touching was always on the outside of the clothing… was very brief and…there’s very strong evidence that (the girls) didn’t know that it was inappropriate when it occurred.”WXYZ shared Kelly’s words with Morgan McCaul, one of Larry Nassar’s victims.“That’s gross.  What you just read is gross,” she said. “When this is a leader and essentially the architect of campus climate, I don’t know how you can send your kids to Michigan State University and feel safe.”The jury in the Kearly case returned a .1 million verdict in favor of the victims.In 2006, Kelly defended a district accused of ignoring allegations that teacher Roderick Reese molested 11 elementary school girls. As is common in sex abuse cases, the plaintiffs filed their lawsuits as Jane Does. But Kelly filed a motion to have the young girls' names made public, saying that the case had already been tried in the press. WXYZ spoke with a parent of one of Reese’s victims, who was 12 when Kelly wanted her name unsealed.“It was kind of like, who’s on trial here?” the father said, who asked that we conceal his identity to protect his daughter. “It’s not my kid or the other parent’s children.”The judge denied Kelly’s motion. The case settled for an undisclosed amount and, in a criminal trial, the teacher was convicted of child molestation. 12 years later, the father of Reese’s victim hasn’t forgotten what Dan Kelly tried to do in court.“I was totally stunned,” he recalled. “Why would he want to do this to these children? They didn’t do anything wrong.”In a January trustees meeting, Kelly apologized to Nassar’s abuse survivors and said, until recently, he had viewed the Nassar scandal through the eyes of a lawyer.“In the back of my mind,” Kelly said, “I thought that this would be resolved in the litigation process.”Attorney Mick Grewal represents more than 80 of Nassar’s victims.“I think he viewed them as the opposition, not survivors,” Grewal said. “It’s clear to me that he’s not the right guy. It’s actually clear to me that everyone on the board is not the right guy or woman.”Dan Kelly declined an on-camera interview, but by phone said he believes he can be the best advocate for victims of Nassar’s abuse. Those that have faced with him in court aren’t so sure.“I don’t think he’s out to protect the victims, myself,” said the father whose daughter Kelly tried to name in court. “And being a defense lawyer, why would he?
